    In 1982 I walked into a friend's bedroom to be confronted by a glorious selection of Citadel skeletons - I was in! I saw Grenadier miniatures in the big model shop in Sheffield, UK (Beaties) and then braved the nerd-cave that was the Sheffield GW store (then on The Moor). I remember these games on the shelves and the plethora of TSR AD&D. I can smell the place now: carboard, metal minis and plastic dice. I was a regular from then on, but it would be a few years before I had a circle of friends to actually play with (Titanicus). Happy days. I still have 2 minis from GW from back then. My pal had Battle Cars on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum - it had the exact same box art as the board game.

    Played Blood Royale regularly as a teenager. It was very, very, very much a weekender - start on Saturday, finish on Sunday.

    Wow, that takes me back to many, many, many nights of gaming in Sydney that I vividly recall. I still have those edtions of Fury of Dracula and Dungeonquest, and of course Talisman, including all the expansions except the Dungeon (I thought a friend I'd lent it to had lost it but I recorered it only this week!). My kids love them. What about Blood Bowl, Horus Heresy and Mighty Empires? Surely they didn't come out in the 1990s?
    You mention playing Dracula on Halloween, I once played it with my girlfriend of the time in a campsite in a remote national park on New Year's Eve over a couple of bottles of red, while the koalas barked all around us in these giant gum trees - pretty bloody spooky...
    We really must play those BattleCars scenarios, if we can decode my abysmal handwriting!

      Those other games you mention are all Warhammer related - perhaps another video.
      Lucky you didn't get attacked by vampire koalas ... the bush is a dangerous place ...
      Yes, I spent a lot of time doing that Battlacars remake, we'll play it again next time you're here. See you tonight on the screen!

    Thanks for all those stimulated memories!! What a walk down memory lane that was. I'm a handful of years younger but lived and played through most of these games in the 80's. I loved the original Talisman and still have it (but only got one expansion). I still have block wars + expansion - loved that game. I had a friend at the time who loved Blood Royale and we would have to leave out for days at a time, playing multiple sessions to conclude a game. Also loved Battlecars so much i had to get 2 copies so we had more board space :-) Some of the others i remember playing with friends but I didn't own myself. (as you do with close friends - better for each to have a different game if your families weren't rich?) What a decade for board games? fantastic

    Fantastic trip down memory lane for me. I would also add to this the original Blood bowl game was in a box (first edition first print run was in a brown box and second printing in a red box) that was just like these too.
    Dungeonquest is my favourite...and Blockmania / Megamania / warlock of firetop mountain and Talisman next.
    The latest version of Dracula came with prepainted miniatures but that is out of print again.
    I finally got to play warrior knights earlier this year because one of my sons bought a FF copy, and it is a fantastic game..we played with 5 people.
    I was laughing at your comments about Chainsaw warrior..I persevered with that game too many times...and always died before defeating Darkness...funnily enough I did lend it to a friend who said he completed it on his second attempt!
    I will did out Rogue Trooper from the loft because I seem to remember liking it but thinking it was a bit of a grind, and I did see you have a player aid on your website.
    I loved the fluff for battle cars..all the more enjoyable after watching your battle of five armies and war of the ring play-throughs.
    Keep up the excellent work!

    Back in 1980 I went into my local game shop with the attention to buy Valley of Four Winds but the sales assistant persuaded me to get basic D&D instead saying it has unlimited playability. I made the right choice sending my pocket money on role playing games but still wouldn't mind a time machine to go back the 1980 game shop and go on a spending spree on the old games

    • @EsotericOrderGamers

    I sprayed some of my board games, with gloss varnish, followed by matt, or silk, depending on what finish I wanted, it protects them pretty well from wear n tear, and especially mold.

      @@EsotericOrderGamers I have played the original space hulk, literally 1000s of times, so much that moving the models had worn through the cardboard tiles 🤣, so when I brought a replacement, I decided to try the varnish idea, and its been great for the last 15 years, my logic was, you varnish the models to protect them from handling, so why not the board and counters.

    • @EsotericOrderGamers
      @EsotericOrderGamers  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I guess my concern is that the moisture in the varnish would make the paper layers on the card ripple.

    • @johnfarscape
      @johnfarscape Před 4 měsíci +1

      @EsotericOrderGamers I didn't just use wood varnish or anything like that 🤣, I brought it from an art shop, it was actually called paper varnish, I think it was made by Rowler Downey or something like that, you can still get it from art shops, I think there is now a decopage one, but I havent tried that yet, its not supposed to react with pigment in inks, or paints on artwork, or cause any curling through shrinkage, I think the newer ones even protect from UV light, so you can protect display boxes. . I would always recommend testing on an easily replacable token or something first, I sprayed one space hulk corridor that I had spares of and left it for a month, just to be sure. .

    Block/Mega Mania was a fun game, as was Kings and Things - a humorous fun fairly light game that non boardgamers were happy to play with me when I started university in 1986. Talisman, of course, got far and away the most play of any GW games, we even played it at school between exams when we did our O and A levels. I liked Valley of the Four Winds because of the WD stories too, but in reality it was just a rather simplistic war game. I think Warlock was probably the hidden gem out of those early games. My first White Dwarf was number 9, though I did have a copy of number 6 off the back issue shelf at Dalling Road. I gave up on WD shortly after it stopped covering RPGs, because it just felt like miniature advertising, despite the fact that I was playing Warhammer and 40k battles in GW stores at the time!
