- I built this virtual pinball machine a couple of years ago and used a Nintendo Switch. I know I could have used a PC but I had a Switch to hand and I liked easy it is to stuff inside. Well now I try it with the Steam Deck in 2022. What are the differences and how does it perform? Well better of course, but by how much and should I make the switch to Steam Deck permanently?
An overview of the build process, setup and how it runs.

I've made a Switch Pinball Cabinet too. Watching this I'm considering a Steam Deck now because of Pinball FX with all of the tables of FX3 under one app. Though that entering the cabinet code every time will get annoying FAST. So maybe I'll stick with the Switch for now lol
Love the build! Great video!
Love the build!
Genius Idea
Fun video, cute cat
Amazing 🎉
nicely edited vid
thanks :)
blimey that pinball build is ace!. you've got some great little details on there. love it.. obvious question: vertical shoot em up's?? come on.. surely..
The thought has crossed my mind more than once 😆 I still haven’t done it though, love a bit of DoDonPachi
I’m I the same boat as you! I made a switch pinball table too. I have tried the SD with it with good results. Shame about having to put the code it each time at least the on screen keyboard now works. Don’t forget the marvel tables ain’t on the switch so that’s an SD win. I’ve been running the new pinball fx on the SD with heroic launcher. It’s a downgrade FPS wise. I can’t hit a stable 60 across all tables. It’s great to find someone else who’s gone down the same route as me. I have a short CZcams clip of my table I’ll post for you.
Here is mine.

Awesome! There’s very pros and cons to each. I’m really impressed with the SD performance though.
Holy crap, you sooooo totally undersold that pinball build 🤣 that thing is sickkkkkkk!!! I gotta build one……it won’t be as cool as that tho……nice one 👍👍
Thanks. You should for sure! Don’t use 18mm MDF like I did, it may be small but it’s still really heavy 🥴
I’m deffo gonna build one next summer, out of interest where did you source the tinted acrylic from? And I’ve never soldered before, would you consider the soldering easy? Any chance of some closer images of the soldering? DM me on insta. No worries if it’s too much hassle tho 👍
@@jigretro I’ll DM you
I had entered the code in Steam on PC, and it added it to my account or so I thought, but I haven't looked at my steam-deck to see if it's there as well... But that could be a work around, once that feature is enabled on PC it may take it to Steam Deck as well...
How do you figure out the case dimensions? I think I could figure out something for the screen, but then the rest of the body... and to do it all from a single sheet of mdf? Any software suggestions? Thanks for the video!
The screen is the only constant, everything else is flexible. If you just think of it as a regular box and then extrapolate from there. I’m a graphic designer so I just used Illustrator for speed.
why not put windows on a mini sd and run pinballfx from there
That is so strange. I have a virtual pinball machine with pinball fx 3 code. I only had to enter it once years ago and that was it.
yeah, It's probably a Steam Deck issue. TBF they warn that FX3 may not work correctly on unsupported systems.
“Other pinball software” is going to be really interesting to see
I’m looking into something called Visual Pinball, it looks ace but will require a bit of set-up!
@@NewRetroAdventures I've been part of the Visual pinball and future pinball community for 22 years, so we will be happy to see you. Both editors work great, fp (future pinball) needs windows due to the BAM plugin, but hopefully we can get it working in steam os. I just ordered my steam deck, and a table developer for fp and main tester for pinball baller has one as well, so we will be able to help a bit if you need it. You will find both of us at pinball nirvana, but you can also find a lot of info at vpforums and vpuniverse.
@@NewRetroAdventures You'd have to figure out a way to side-load it as it doesn't exist on steam...
@@DerekCrosby That shouldn't be a problem. I've had good luck adding non-Steam games in Desktop mode
fyi anti aliasing will add latency
Good to know, thanks 🙏
