My dad was a Ranger, 82nd Airborne 75th regiment 2nd battalion. He was in the last part of Vietnam, fought in Grenada, and then Panama. After that, he left the service shortly before the action in Somalia. I remember well what his reaction was to that whole fiasco, because when he learned of the true scale of what had happened there he completely broke down. I had never seen my dad cry before, but learning that several of his closest friends had died there for nothing turned him from the hardest and most stoic man I'd ever known into a sand castle in a hurricane.
My son recently went through basic training.I got a message one day during week 3 at 630am saying ‘love you’.to be honest I was expecting it He was ready to quit and walk away, I managed to turn him around because I’m a veteran myself One of the things I said was ‘they can’t stop time, tomorrow will come and then it will be a brand new day’ I took his first salute June last year,he now is coming top in everything he does We have a £1 bet he will go special forces, ridiculous not really,as any veteran will understand sometimes all that matters is saying a few words that can change your direction totally🇬🇧
From the ancient days of the Spartans until the present, soldiers say the same thing which is as true now as it was back then. Honor, loyalty, and looking out for your fellow soldier next to you. While politicians debate policy from their cozy statehouses and send soldiers to fight for their self-interests, politics mean nothing to the common man who fights and bleeds for his fellow soldiers fighting alongside him. Thank you, United States Military for keeping us safe.
Delta really are a different bread. A ranger once asked an operator for advice on clearing rooms, he said this: "Just take it to the plate. And keep going." Legends

This movie is the best military movie till date thanks Hollywood for giving us such memories. Greetings from india Huge fan of Eric Bana This is not just a movie but an emotion
This movie, and Hoots speech itself, motivated me to become a 75th Ranger at a young age. Now that I leave for basic soon, 10 years later, and I go from Basic, to Infantry, and finally RASP. Definitely came a long way from just one movie and a well scripted speech🤙🏻
I love how he enjoys hot chow. Unless you've served, you have no idea how amazing hot chow is even though you shove it down as fast as you can, because you've got another patrol to go on.
I love it. "They don't understand". He is right. People who mock our soldiers will never know what our men see. I have so much respect and gratitude for our nations military. Never seen the movie, looks good.
This could not have been more perfectly displayed. A lot of my guys I served in OIF 1-2 with didn't agree with why we were there, so for us it was all about the man next to you. The bonds forged in the fires of combat are some of the closest bonds you will ever develop, if not the closest bond.
I've been a soldier, been in a warzone, been in combat and I have watched my friends and others die. There are a few who are in it for the paycheck, some others who are in it for the adrenaline. But seriously, the vast majority do it for other reasons. They enter in with the idea of being defenders, they hold together for those who fight beside them. Yes, "used". Because it is a trust betrayed. That our lives will not be expended for any but the most dire reasons and not for economics or ego.

My favorite line of Bana's in this movie was always "you know what I think? It don't matter what I think." He knows why he's there and doesn't care about any of the politics or other bullshit.
I served with a bunch of HEROES that didn't come back. I made it back but with TBI. Then again, I'm still alive, my brothers aren't. They were not losers or suckers. Eff anyone who says they aren't HEROES!
Gothic serpent is the reason I joined the army, I was 504th pir for 3 years before joining 2/75, but the movie was good but my brother was a ranger at the time of Somalia and he was there and he told me shit about it that wasn’t in the movie, These men fought the fight not for America but for the men on side of them and that gave me chills when he told me that, I knew I was gonna serve. I’ve given 12 years of blood, sweat and more tears than anything and I’d do it all over again. RLTW
I served 30 odd years in the fire service. Fire-fighter and officer. I truly felt we had each others backs. But I cannot imagine what that feeling must be like amongst soldiers.
My Dad was at D-Day & after, he saw things, he did things, as a wartime Paratrooper they were usually up against the evil of the SS, "We did things Son, 'cos it was them or us", was what he once said to me. He had me late in life, & he wouldn't speak about the war to my older siblings, but time is a great healer & in his later years, he used to talk to me often about what he went through. I can say this, my dad would understand precisely what Eric Bana's character means.
To all the heroes of these past wars. It wasn't the cause as much as how you conducted yourself with honor that makes you a hero. Standing by the person next to you, and do the best you could. You are among the best we have to offer.

But before you decide to make remarks about how the US is shit, yes i think our government is crap and need a cleansing of government but, We have done so much for the world, yes sometimes it wasn't good, but in the long run, we are doing what is right. So anyone of you who are talking shit and think you know everything, you don't, I do, take it from a US Soldier who has been there before and still continues to Serve this Great Nation. HOOAH!
I got to know Hoot in the late 90's. I use to deliver to his house when my UPS route was in Southern Pines NC. 145 Valhalla Road. Still remember the address. Very down to Earth guy.
I finally told my little brother that I will be joining the military either next year or a few years from now. At first he threw a tantrum and then he finally asked me "why sis, why do you want to join the military?" I didn't know what to say to him. I didn't what to say to make an eight year understand my logic for joining. That right there about the man next to you pretty much sums it up though. My family has joined the military for many generations. Many proud with lots of medals and awards flashing on their chest. I hope to make them proud one day and be able to keep this country and my family just as safe as the generations in my family before me.
You got to watch a movie in basic training??? What the hell has the Army come to these days? I went through Jackson in 2008 and we didn't get any damn movie!! Phone calls only about 2 maybe 3 times a month, from a payphone and you had to wait in line and only got 5-10 minutes. And they called us soft then....WTF???
Agent1W That questions shows that you haven´t understood him. He says "I´m better on my own." ,to protect him. He doesn´t want him to go out again and maybe die.
Agent1W that means he doesn't want others keep responsible for protecting him and dying for him, he prefers to go out there and fight by himself, while protecting men next to him.
Truer words are seldom spoken, even though it's a movie it is incredibly accurate. I was in the Army, never saw combat, but I've been a full time firefighter for 16 years and the same applies there. Firefighters often go to extremes to save a life, but also so our brother firefighters are not alone in dangerous situations. When the shit hits the fan it has nothing to do with pride, or a paycheck, it's all about having each others back no matter what.
I love this movie and this scene... but my favourite part is right at the end when Eversmann is talking to Smith about being a hero and tells him he'll talk to his parents when he gets home, it's so sad 😢 💔

Well, I use to say that I do it for them but they don't understand why I go it for them, they just sat "We didn't ask you to do it", ofc they didn't but who will if no one do ? Do they think that the evil and the dark is keeping away by kindess and churchs ? No it's not, it's because some of us have enough to do what must be done. They never got it.
Respect you ,bro,it’s about the men next to you
Yeah Back your brother no matter what....Go ahead and write that false police report. Turn your back while your partner beats a handcuffed suspect.....Or join in!......Yeah we know why you do it!
F.T.P
Lol the irony "it's about the MEN next to ya" then he says "I'm better on my OWN" Hardcore Delta boy
Not really irony.
Yeah cause he was tryna keep him im a safe zone dummy
I found it really difficult to make new friends after leaving the service. It's... just not the same.
My son recently went through basic training.I got a message one day during week 3 at 630am saying ‘love you’.to be honest I was expecting it
He was ready to quit and walk away, I managed to turn him around because I’m a veteran myself
One of the things I said was ‘they can’t stop time, tomorrow will come and then it will be a brand new day’
I took his first salute June last year,he now is coming top in everything he does
We have a £1 bet he will go special forces, ridiculous not really,as any veteran will understand sometimes all that matters is saying a few words that can change your direction totally🇬🇧
Kudos. I hope your son is doing great.
He's just passed out a year and your betting on him going Hereford. Jeez mate, give the kid a break
And keep going."
Legends
Jesus, as in take the hits to center vest plate? Damn.
Got the tatoo, not a bread, just the training and experience,,,,,
Damn !! Nothing ever changes .. Its still about the man next to you .. Who knew ?? Most people will never get that .. Most people don't have jobs that can end up in death ..
Still true . Its about shared pain and sacrifice .
Especially now days since we got rid of most of our manufacturing jobs.
As it should be. That's why these soldiers are fighting, so that they are the only ones who have to experience combat.
for some reason the one line that gets me is when he walks off and says casually " hey its monday we start a whole new week". he says it as if he hadnt been through hell and back, like nothing affects him.
This movie is the best military movie till date thanks Hollywood for giving us such memories.
Greetings from india
Huge fan of Eric Bana
This is not just a movie but an emotion
This movie, and Hoots speech itself, motivated me to become a 75th Ranger at a young age. Now that I leave for basic soon, 10 years later, and I go from Basic, to Infantry, and finally RASP. Definitely came a long way from just one movie and a well scripted speech🤙🏻
I hope option 40 did you well.
I love how he enjoys hot chow. Unless you've served, you have no idea how amazing hot chow is even though you shove it down as fast as you can, because you've got another patrol to go on.
Damn right Brother,Hot chow is a God Send while deployed,In the sand Box. 🐗
@@garrettwoodard2558 best to you
Why do you think we love tea so much (UK)? Have a brew, get back out there. Always time enough to brew up!
A field kitchen and field shower are great morale boosters when you have access to them.
Beans and bullets
The casting of BlackHawk Down is perfect. Every single actor nailed his character to Perfection!!
Hooah brother from a canadian who's got Military family who went to Iraq and Afghanistan cheers
@@truenorthgamesthank you, and for your families sacrifices in the name of peace, and freedom
amazing accent from an Aussie actor
ye i really like him, so sad there aint that many good movies with him :S
Yeah. You also know that Jason Isaacs (Capt. Steele) is English as well? You'd never know watching this film
@@Red_Beard2798 Most of the cast of this movie aren't even American.
Aussie troops were there in Somalia too SASR (special forces) aswell
I have the same feeling every day after work at my home.
Well I don't like being used for anyone s stupid ridiculousness, they haven't endured all this crap as I or some others have...this should of been over long time ago, especially certain segments n more progress made, not everyone is going to be in everyones lives or continue on through various journeys...quit holding my stuff away from me n I wouldn't be as standoffish or at such a standstill w stuff...it's bullshit, there's things that have not been accomplished or corrected n it's halting other success.. what the hell y'all expect or hope that's I myself in a positive perspective would attempt to accomplish n not the innaproppriate stuff others know I'm not wanting to for their horrible reasons..u know what I mean
Frankly lots of guys join the military because they don't know what else to do.
And they are idealists. I know I'm one of them.
So god damn right, in the end its for the guy next to u, Nothing else.
I've always wanted him to say, "When I go home, people ask me, "Hoot... why you give a hoot?"
My favorite line of Bana's in this movie was always "you know what I think? It don't matter what I think." He knows why he's there and doesn't care about any of the politics or other bullshit.
I love this scene never understood it as a child, now i understand as am 23 now.
I served with a bunch of HEROES that didn't come back. I made it back but with TBI. Then again, I'm still alive, my brothers aren't. They were not losers or suckers. Eff anyone who says they aren't HEROES!
"Its the men beside you..It has always been the men beside you."
His picture is rare among srgt eversman and his team when a ranger was dying of a mortal leg wound.
Reminds me of what Perseus said to Zeus “If we fight and we die, we do it for each other, not for you”
Eric Bana
Was unbelievable on that movie
His role never get credits he deserve
I love how he ends it with "That's all it is." It's as simple as that.
I know some 1 that thinks dat I am his savior!
You are among the best we have to offer.
we started a whole new week it's Monday 2024 ! ⚔
This speech speaks loud and clear, black hawk down and saving private Ryan is by far the 2 best movie I seen
" They wont understand' Amen
Every year when I buy cod people ask "hey ice? Why do you do it? Why? Are you some kind of cod fan boy?" They won't understand. They won't understand it's about the arcade shooter.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Must have watched it a dozen times.
Noone gets left behind. Goosebumps, and the spine chills
"it's about the men standing next to you"
"I'm better off on my own" :|
Listen, Im a Commissioned US ARMY Officer, people who talk shit about our country are idiots. Im not going to go on rants and talk shit. HOOAH!
stephen wright stop using the movie to push your fucked up right wing agenda. Loser
yes , yes , you have done so much for the world XD
I got to know Hoot in the late 90's. I use to deliver to his house when my UPS route was in Southern Pines NC. 145 Valhalla Road. Still remember the address. Very down to Earth guy.
Goddamn this time movies were just great. Feels like I'm waiting years for one movie to watch now.
They showed this to us in Basic. Bravo 787 Lenoardwood
It's so true. I really have no words to explain it sometimes that people who didn't go could understand.
I remembered this scene today. There are this kind of people in this world just about the work.
You were right hoot " It's all the men next to you" best line ever Eric Bana your the best actor on the planet earth
Fire everything! :P
loooooooooooooooooooooooool
Then in the next moment he says, "I'm better on my own." A dichotomy that's seems to make Army sense?
When the shit hits the fan it has nothing to do with pride, or a paycheck, it's all about having each others back no matter what.
tewksbury driver u firefighters are warriors with hoses n firepumps n jaws of life etc 😎
I had 2 buddy's from high school die in that raid.
That last speech gets me every time...
That's me 2023. I'm better on my own. Take care of yourselves 🇺🇸.
I love this movie and this scene... but my favourite part is right at the end when Eversmann is talking to Smith about being a hero and tells him he'll talk to his parents when he gets home, it's so sad 😢 💔
Been there & done it...know how he feels.
Hans Zimmer, some of his best work.
I was going to press the like button but i leave that to the real ones...MUCH RESPECT BUD
I love this scene I always revisit it in my mind and here on CZcams. It’s powerful, beautiful and haunting all at the same time.
"Black Hawk Down" Soundtrack - Leave no Man Behind by Hans Zimmer. )))
No, I found it. It's "They Won't Understand Why We Do It".

Brotherhood. Just plain brotherhood is why we go out again and again.
Bana nailed that! Incredible acting
The last line is the most powerful... Its a whole new week...
This is why they call the green berets "silent professionals", much respect.
they were delta?
A true man, a true warrior.
I absolutely love this scene, but the week does start on Sunday, not Monday lol
Love Erik bana. I never watched this but I will ❤
This is the line people fail to see when considering the necessity of going to war. It’s not about wanting to kill the other guy, or conquer his land, it’s about being there for the men next to you.
It's about being there with your fellow war criminals invading a land that got nothing to do with you
This guy was a composite character
Charles Beckwith He literally was based on multiple people in the Delta unit
Yeah the sayings and actions were but the name was real as there really was a guy there nicknamed "Hoot"....Ewan McGregors character was more of a composite and the name was changed on his character completely because the guy in real life ended up being a pedophile.
I remember seeing this movie at 15 years old. Such a powerful movie.
real people keep it real 100. Not all heros wear capes
