  • In this video, Sam turns a Box Elder-end grain bowl. He covers several tools which are options for removing wood from an end grain project. He encounters some "challenges" along the way which results in Sam just cutting this bowl in half...... Parts of this video uncovered some good lessons and one big FAIL!!!!! Have fun.

    Thanks Sam, Enjoyed the tip on putting wet wood in a freezer to suspend the drying process. Also watchin your technique with scrapers.

    Thank you for the tips and education. As a new wood turner, I have been making little bowls like that. Mostly because that is the wood I have right now. LOL. I figure it is good practice for skill building before I move on to larger pieces which I have drying out right now.

    Thanks Sam! A little more education. I can build a funnel almost every time I turn end grain. And I have some fancy firewood to prove it. Did I really admit that out loud?
    Take care, Dave

    Too bad it developed a hole in the centre Sam. Great video though. I recently made 10 small cups for my wife to hold mints for Christmas. They were made from ash that the emerald ash borer devastated. They were all end grain and you can see all the holes and trails that the borers had left. I used forstner bits to do the hollowing. I did not lose any pith areas. I parted until the stem was about 1/4 inch then sawed the rest off.

    I did an end grain last week, mine was more of a hollow form but.... Its came off the chuck when the tenon failed, it was a hot mess from then on....I managed to save the piece but I would never sell it to many blemishes in this turn.

    May I suggest using a saw next time to part off end grain turnings, doesn't put nearly as much stress on the center of the turning.

      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  Před rokem

      Yes, I ordinary early do saw these off. I like to turn them down to about 1/8 of an inch but the bottom on this was extremely punky and destined for disaster. Ha ha not the museum. Thanks for watching. Say hello to ohio for me Sam.

    What about drilling the interior as a first step for end grain?

  • @dougrobins8291
    @dougrobins8291 Před rokem

    Would you recommend sawing the bowl free from the tenon? Then, would it be better to let it dry before sanding the nub off?

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  Před rokem

      Yes, ordinarily this would’ve been a better procedure. But this piece of wood was destined for the firewood pile. It was just to punky in the endgrain. Sam

      Happens to all of us once in awhile, usually my error not the wood’s fault! Whole different challenges for end grain, thanks Sam.

  • @trurex007lee7
    @trurex007lee7 Před rokem

    Hi Sam, Question: You turned it between centers and got it evenly round and made a perfect tenon, why wasn’t the wood still balanced round when you put the tenon into the chuck? It happens to me frequently so just thought it was my inexperience or poor technique but wouldn’t expect it from you unless there is some logical “wood turning” reason. Thanks.

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  Před rokem

      Larry, I had similar issues with my McNaughton coring system. Mine was set up for a 16 inch swing lathe. I had to get a taller post for my own American beauty. This was not a big deal but you might check with Oneway for the correct answer. Sorry I have no experience with the one-way Sam. Thanks.

    Sorry to come back with a further query about putting wet wood in the freezer, but depending upon the closeness or openness of the particular wood isn’t there a chance that freezing wet wood could have the same kind effect upon the cell structure as when puts a strawberry in the freezer? I E increases the likelihood that the wet wood looses its integrity. Could that have been a contributory factor as to why your example end-grain bowl broke off with a hole in the middle bottom? As ever I found your video instructive. Thanks.

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  Před rokem

      I agree with what you were saying. I think the biggest problem with this piece was the pith was right in the center of the bowl and made it very weak. And perhaps I turned the bottom to thin so there is no strength left. I got to a point where I knew this little bowl was not going to be a completed piece and I do usually saw these off when I get down so thin thanks
      Sam

      “Are you drinking”? Not sure exactly what you were talking about. Is there something in this video that leads you to think that I was drinking. I try to take all comments seriously, but just not sure how to respond to this. Sam.

    Please do not promote wearing a watch while turning. It is a potentially dangerous practice. Many new turners may not know the hazard.
