I like the compare and contrast of each style you attempted. However, I really liked how you were thinking how you will incorporate certain aspects of each tutorial into future models. This is how I progressed in my personal learning journey.

I've always used a pencil to gently (not too dark) hand draw lines and used the lighter color as the first (i.e. Black over yellow here). Great video and looking forward to your future content

My thought pattern re music kinda went like this:
"What is your favourite genre? Yes."
I can already tell this is going to be my new favorite painting channel. Your cinematography is amazing. Your paintjobs, while really good, arent "Ive placed in the Golden Demon three times and won once" level insanity like a lot of what I see on youtube. Its much closer to my own level, which makes it significantly more relatable, makes me want to paint more, and makes it easier to not be so hard on myself for not being as good as what I'm seeing. You make mistakes and dont just gloss over them and hope nobody will notice.

As others have said, I like to file a pencil to an ultra-fine point and trace my stripes on (I haven’t done any Iron Warriors, but my Genestealer Cultists enjoy that ornamentation too). Of your four, I have to say I like the “Duncan” example the best, for the uniformity of the lines. Well done, I look forward to seeing more from you!

I believe the chrome paint is alcohol based rather then water based which would explain why it didn't work on the wet palette

Good vid, covered some great painters, looked at the elements of each scheme and decided on an amalgamation, which is essentially what we all do to personalise our armies whilst making them obvious.
I wouldn't go too hard on yourself, attempting highlights, glazes and hazard stripes with little experience is a bold move, although you don't actually say you're inexperienced, you just say [redacted].
Great vid, you have done what I have being doing for the past weeks looking and trying schemes to find out what I like and what I don’t. Keep it up and kind wait to see the Warpsmith as I have one of those too to paint 😉
Currently filming part two, painted my first mix of the bunch and then trying to find my favourite way of painting hazard stripes!
Tamiya makes ultra fine masking tape for hazard stripe perfection.
I found some for part 2. Currently filming and trying it out.

I'm looking at starting my first army (Iron Warriors as well) and I think it's really valuable to see a novice attempt these painting tutorials. They always come out immaculate in the videos, so this is a great way to see what mine will more or less look like, and maybe how I can avoid some minor mistakes. Awesome video!

When it comes to the armor, I find myself to be a bit of a freak and do a whole lot of drybrushing. Spray it black, start from Iron Warriors, go to Leadbelcher, Iron Hands, and then Necron Compound (or Stormhost, they're pretty much the same thing in terms of color), and use a lamp or something as a guide on where to brush. You start all over, then get smaller and smaller as the light becomes more intense, and then you use Contrasts to preserve the highlights while also getting that color you want. JuanHidalgo's tips on the hazard stripes work extremely well with this technique as well, but I use the lamp to judge how I paint my highlights and shadows.

Seen it mentioned already but the pencil marks really help me get my stripes equal and parallel before I start painting and have saved me from bad positioning where it gets to the trim. Going to try using contrast paints to get a good gradient.
If you like a good shiny metal I highly recommend Vallejo Metal color line. Saw some other CZcamsrs mention it and it's been a joy to paint with. Also one of them is named Burnt Iron and it just went too well to pass up.

Excellent work on the minis dude. After personally painting over 10K points of Iron Warriors, I've found that Hazard Stripes look a lot cooler when you make it less uniform, and more akin to ritualistic markings, as if done to the marine's own choice. Bonus points for doing the trim in Hazards.
Over 10k?! You crazy person. Interesting take on the hazard stripes idea. I'm making part two now, if I've got the time I'll absolutely make a marine that's got hazard stripe trim haha!
Come to think of it I've a test marine I'm not really attached to, you're on!

I’ve been on my own journey getting back into the hobby over the last year and CZcams tutorials have been so helpful for that (wish they were around 20 years ago, I would’ve at least thinned my paints!). Over the year, as I’ve got more confident, I’ve done similar to what you were suggesting at the end, cherry picking certain approaches from different tutorials and meshing them together - decisions often driven by paints needed, skill level and time. There’s a level of freedom when you’re able to do that imo. Main thing that’s helped though is finding a support community to discuss, get inspired, show off, get motivation. Without that network, doing the hobby in a vacuum is so unrewarding.
Great minds - literally did the same thing. Scouring youtube for the best IW painting options. My top four picks (in no particular order): 1 Pete the Wargamer 2. The Painting Coach 3. Duncan Rhodes 4. Juan Hidalgo. I laughed each time they came up on yours. Small world. I also preferred the overall aesthetic of the Painting Coach, but Duncan's eyes and dark theme, Hidalgo's techniques and stripes all were solid wins. Like you I'll do a combination. Some time in the future we'll have to swap pic's of our finished product! I really liked Duncan's dark theme but my own concern was how dark Duncan's final model was. Keeping the theme through the entire army is important. Meaning my vehicles will need that same dark like qualities, this scares me more with the large vehicles. My airbrushing skills are non-existent. I feel the Painting Coach's theme would be easier to carry across the army. We have similar piles of shame.... sub'd :)
Amazing, what are the chances ey?! I discounted any airbrush based tutorials as I'm not really ready for that yet, these were the four! absolutely keep me updated with what you choose to do, I've made my first hybrid marine recently but have a couple of things to decide on, mainly the colour of all the trim!
@@thepaintingphase 2nd attempt was a batch of 5 marines with Duncan's dark theme - again just too dark, looked more like Black Legion, even with the chevrons. Which I conclude are ridiculously hard to do well. I take back all my internal comments about IW armies I see painted when their lines weren't good. Enough that I purchased some 2mm pinstripe tape - I'll see how that goes with the next batch. As for the dark theme I maybe needed to dilute Basilicanum for a better effect. Trying 5 IW with J Hidalgo armour and darker trim hopefully a better final product
I've literally just finished my next test marine which will be in the next video and used diluted Basilicanum Grey to shade, I like it! Tried some tape and got ok results, almost not worth it for the faff, found it quite plasticy and difficult to mould around the marine. Trying normal masking tape next and someone recommended Gundam Paint markers so have some in the post.
@@thepaintingphase Howdy again, been a while and my struggles continues for my own IW. Congrat's to you and your latest vids huge improvements across the board - you're much more willing to experiment out of the box which I admire. I continue to struggle with the visual of dark and grimy nature of the models. I get the Grim dark aesthetic but I found my small force of CSM just didn't fill me with joy and it was starting to look a little too much like a more shiny Black Legion. It doesn't help that I'm painting the old first born models that is smaller in size. Idea was to progress through my collection then get to the full size 'normal' models. The pivotal problem - hazard stripes, continues to be a bane of my painting existence. Did try the pinstripe tape to no avail - way, way too much faffing around and the final product was still subpar. Pencil seems to be the winner but still it looks shitte :( I now completely understand why the PaintingCoach leaves them off. Just do them on the odd weapon or so. Juan's style is awesome but trying to do the techniques on smaller models just blends everything badly. I just finished Batch painting 124 bases so all i need now is some completed actual Iron Warriors.... I keep returning to the PaintingCoach's example. A much lighter colour scheme for the aesthetic of an entire army. For the infantry it's solid but for a shiny large vehicle I have doubts. At least with vehicles the chevrons will be easy. Rewatched all the video's again and contemplating my next path. The long war continues, hang in there :)
I just recently got into the table top side of the hobby and these look good. I personally like the first one best cause it seems dirty and unkempt kinda how the actual legion would be. Great job dude.

I personally really liked Duncan’s video but I think Pete’s is perfect for brand new painters or for those hobbyists looking to get a army done quickly.
Please continue to do similar videos like this as it was very refreshing.
I'm making part 2 as we speak, I've painted a hybrid using lots of Juan's techniques but Duncan's colours. Hopefully have part two out before the end of the month!

Really Enjoyed this Video, I Prefer the Bright Armour and Darker Trim myself that's how I do it now, takes a bit longer tho, depends on what you want from the experience (speed or quality) you'll pick you own style no doubt after painting for a while, I used to paint my Iron warriors Copper then dry brush Gunmetal over that, but that was an age ago now. Keep the vids coming and good luck with the channel i look forward to more videos !

Hey man. Love your channel. Never put metallics onto a wet palette - you'll cross contaminate into other paints and metallic flakes will get into the foam. I always use hard palettes for metallics and mixing washes/contrasts...

The 90mm is awesome, I've also got the 50mm macro which is pretty nifty, autofocus isn't all that but the smaller size is great if I need to get the camera in between myself and the mini.

Im new to the hobby too and iron warriors might be my favorite legion but i went with the black legion because you get your main color from priming. Good thing I did that. I am so damn sick of painting trim right now. Cant imagine how bad itd be if I had to paint just about everything like with iron warriors.
There is a lot of trim! The dry brush and contrast method from Pete was a massive time save, no edge highlights either!
bro its about what YOU like, everyone has a different style, me personally i love grungy and nasty so a bunch of rust and oil
I think the miniature using Duncan's tutorial turned out the best. The upper torso and helmet, especially the eyes, really improve the overall look because that's where a person's vision is drawn when they first look at a model. I like the darker trim too 👍 If I were to offer some critique, the biggest thing you can improve is how you highlight the black shoulder pads.
Duncan's eyes are definitely my favourite, have used them on all the iron warriors I've painted after these. (Out of context that sounded weird).
Definitely lulled myself into thinking my grey highlight was ok but when adding transfers it's definitely too thick. Work to refine if begins!
For being new to painting, you're able to get remarkable detail with your steady hand.. I typically end up spending half the painting time going back and forth with one colour and then the other trying to fix my over-spill!
Oh I've plenty of that haha, probably just edited some of it out or didn't film it 😂

It's an idea I stole from the army painters at GW, much cheaper than a vortex mixer! I believe it's called a "pigment mixer" £8 each on Amazon. Bargatious!

With hazard stripes, I use hobby tape. I'm a stickler for straight lines. A big no-no with metallics is using a wet pallette. The metallic fragments seperate from the pigment of the paint, and it can ruin your wet pallette completely, so watch out, especially with GSW and Vallejo which IIRC use actual alluminium particles. Also be sure to use brushes you don't mind ruining with metallic paints. The particles can end up stuck and not wash out which ends up separating your bristles over time. I love the sons of Perturabo and I'm stoked you chose them as your first project!

Probably unsurprisingly given your profession but - Beautifully shot video, great to watch.
Content was great too - The technique comparison was interesting, appreciate the quick time/cost analysis.
If your doing any more IW I recommend checking the Iron Warrior Reddit & Iron Warrior discord, there’s a pretty good painting community over there & I’ve learned lots :)
I had a Quick thought while watching the first part with contrast speed painting - it seems that it would be hard to ‘fix’ mistakes on the hazards as you can’t cover the black paint with contrast paint. You *might* overcome this by changing the order - paint the base armour piece white, then do your black stripes (tidying your black stripes with the white paint until you’re happy) and only then covering the part with yellow contrast. If necessary you could quickly run a little more black over the top of the stripes, but I wouldn’t think it likely to be necessary. The contrast should tint the white & be unnoticeable on the black.

I'll give that order of operations a try, currently I've settled on a base of averland sunset because it's easier to touch up afterwards. I did like the look of the contrast paint but made too many mistakes and touching it up was difficult so I'd usually paint over it with averland anyway! I'll give that a go in part two!
@@thepaintingphase averland is what I use :) I haven’t found a yellow paint that covers black better than Averland yet!
They are all good but I’d agree that the quick and cheap method is hard to beat.
It's certainly got character! Painting a full army that would be the way I'd go.
Well 'videographer as a trade' shouldn't be discounted because it's made for some of the best miniature painting I've seen on CZcams. Your subscriber count is ludicrously low. On the first one you could just paint over the shoulder pad with black and apply the transfer.
For the stripes you could just use the masking tape, no?
Yeah in hindsight I should have done that. Tape etc in part 2, I just wanted to follow the tutorials in this episode.
If you could put Duncan's eyes and Juan's stripes on Pete's marine you'd have my favorite
Interesting! Everyone has their favourite elements, I'm merging a bunch of them together for part 2 which I'm currently filming. Every marine l, however, will absolutely have Duncan's eyes because they're awesome.

Thanks for this, been meaning to start painting my IW's for years, but can't ever settle on a 'style' as it where. Agree the 2nd on is the most eye catching overall but I really really like the eye glow on 3. been trying to pull off some subtle OSL on my blue/pink horrors to get used to the execution of it but it's slow going thus far. >XD

-Spray Leadbelcher
-Slightly thinned Basilicanum Grey all over the armor and trim
-Dry brush everything with Iron Hands Steel using a soft medium-ish makeup brush
-edge highlight everything Iron Hands Steel and then a bright silver on the sharpest parts
-use multiple thin coats of Skeleton Horde on the trim, it builds up a nice dark aged gold/bronze look
