  • I have been wanting to make a wooden salamander lure for a long time. When researching for this video, I came across a closely related creature called the Alpine Newt. Because some of my favorite places to fish are alpine lakes, this topwater lure will be a great addition to my tackle box. Join me through my process of making this handmade fishing lure with detailed carving, airbrush painting and brush painting. This natural looking topwater lure was a joy to carve, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

    Hi Zimmtex? This is another amazing lure project. How you talk/educate as you build the lure is awesome. As for you painting the design on this newt is beautiful, I would suggest you have a look at a technique that Marlin baits does to create depth to his designs by layering paint and clearcoats. Keep up the good work, can't wait for the next one

    I don't really have anywhere local that this would be a good lure. But I can see up in the mountains it would work great.

    I like the look of that, would probably work pretty well for perch and small pike here in England. I'd be tempted to use a hole and pin to secure a replacable cut down curly tail grub to act as a tail to provide movement instead of the jointed tail, but that's just the lazy low skill option haha. Definitely going in the list of projects I will get around to one day though

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  Před 2 lety

      Thanks, I bet it would work for those fish! I think a grub tail would give it a nice flowing movement. I appreciate you watching!

    Cool lure, I would of put a wire for the arms and leg , that fishing line will break when any fish hits that lure

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  Před 2 lety

      I considered wire; also heavy braid. I'm going to try it out this summer, so we'll see how it holds up. Stay tuned!

    Just to let you know they were dangling down like you wanted, but I noticed that you cut off the dangling feet right after using the bandsaw.

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  Před rokem

      I was hoping to get a little bit of bounce out of the legs when I twitch the lure. So I cut them to try different monofilaments to get that movement.

    Looks great but just so you know, as far as I know, all newts (not salamanders) are highly toxic so it's pretty unlikely that they would ever be a targeted forage. Looks good though!

    Hi again, Have you ever tried like a thin surgical tubing for the legs? Just me thinking, it may give the effect of swimming as it is reeled in. Just curious.

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  Před rokem +1

      I have not tried that, but it sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!

  • @Lawrryful

    Maybe some heavy braid?

    • @zimmtex
      @zimmtex  Před 2 lety

      I considered that, but I think the arms would be too floppy and would wind up floating higher than the body. However, I think a heavy braid paired with a 5 pound line might be the answer. That would give me the strength of braid while the ultralight fluorocarbon provided just enough stiffness to hold the limbs out in the correct position. Great brainstorming idea!
