Helping Homeless Asylum Seeker: Troubled Dublin 🇮🇪

  • Dublin is a city famous for its warm welcome and hospitality. It had been almost 10 years since my last visit, and unfortunately the city no longer felt so inviting to me. Walking the streets felt edgy and more dangerous in 2023. The day before I shot this video, I spent some time talking to Mohammed. He was a Syrian refugee who I came across him camped in a tent on the pavement in the city. He had all of his worldly belongings with him, camped out in the cold November weather, and was waiting patiently for a permit to begin work. He struck me as an amiable and genuine man who spoke very good English. I thought he deserved a helping hand, so I withdrew €100 from the ATM and went on a market hunt to buy him warm clothes, toiletries and food. I visited only stalls and small local shops, seeing what help I could get to help him as much as possible.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the shop/stall holders/taxi would not have been too happy if they had known you weren't helping a local Irish homeless person. Each and every person who commented along the way said their city/country had changed in recent times and wasn't the same. I wonder why?!?!

The trouble is, one Mohammed is fine, but there are tens of 1000's of Mohammed's right behind him, waiting to take his place. This is the problem for the people of western countries like Ireland. These foreigners (and they are foreigners) are taking the housing and jobs away from the people. I appreciate what the creator is trying to do, but people want to help their own first and foremost.

I was homeless in Dublin for 3 months before moving home to England where I was told there was no help for me as a homeless man because I wasn't from a minority. It took me 6 years to get on a tenancy. If I was an immigrant I would have been given shelter and help immediately.

Just shows you how someone's opinion of someone else can change just by the colour of their skin, gender or whatever, or in this case, what country they came from.

There was no need to tell every salesmen you are helping a supposed homeless person and shoving a camera in their face to guilt trip them into giving you discounts. I understand you need content for the video but it is pure virtue signalling. Then after Dubliners tell you how much immigration has made the town worse, you give the food and clothes to Mohammed the immigrant who looks remarkably well kept and suitably disappointed with what you had spent the day getting for him. He was probably hoping for a new playstation not pounds of pomegranates. It's like a comedy sketch. It would be funny if it weren't true.

Most are not accepting of it and the donations received In return for doing a good deed is a reflection of that extended kindness goes a long way then those who otherwise don't help or choose not to. It's really interesting to see these videos. An Iranian friend of mine in the past surprised me once when she nipped into Sainsbury's in London and bought some brioche. I didnt think it was for her, but what she did was give it to the man we had just walked passed. I had no idea what she was doing but its something that struck me for a long time and this video made me tearful thinking about the kindness and the way we are with each other.

That guy recently came into Ireland. Where he pitched his tent is only there because the government haven’t any more room and they are close to government offices now. That guy is clean cut, he looks fit. He looks healthy and not struggling. You could have gave it to a native Irish but it’s very likely they would be caught in the drug/alcohol cycle.

Another thing is and that does not only go for Dublin and even for the UK but for most European countries. I am born and bread in a northern european country and I know the UK pretty well since I have worked and lived there when young, we do feel sorry for the Asylum seekers and the immigrants but we have to think about ourselves that is our own people first and foremost. We cannot feed the entire world. And when the war is over, the refugees are not going back home, they are staying and they have more children, lots more children than we do. Europeans need to think about our own people first. That is just my opinion everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if we keep spending money on other countries populations how can we take care of ourselves.

It's a shame a city like Dublin has gone down to the point the locals feel scared, but I'm in awe at the generosity. Businesses struggling, the lady who that €2 might mean a lot to and the taxi driver who maybe has people jumping out without paying. Faith in humanity restored. 🥰 .. and then I read some of these comments ... 😞

Your kindness and generosity shine through in this video, and it's inspiring to witness how many people in Dublin are willing to lend a hand when it counts. Keep up the fantastic work, and I hope your actions inspire even more acts of kindness in the world.
