The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It | Robert Reich

  • Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich presents the reader's digest of his latest book, The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It. He explores the system of power in America that bails out corporations instead of people, even in times of crisis, and breaks down how we have socialism for corporations and the rich, and harsh capitalism for everybody else.
As power has concentrated in the hands of corporations and the wealthy few, those few have grabbed nearly all the economic gains - and political power - for themselves.
    Meanwhile, workers have been shafted.
This isn’t a democracy, where all power is shared. It’s an oligarchy, where those at the top have the power to grab everything for themselves.
But history shows that oligarchies cannot hold on to power forever. They are inherently unstable. When a vast majority of people come to view an oligarchy as illegitimate and an obstacle to their wellbeing - which is happening before our very eyes as this crisis exacerbates - oligarchies become vulnerable.
Order Reich's new book today: bit.ly/thesystemrbreich

As the great humanitarian Public Health expert and author Hans Rosling stated,
"Do we blame this on Grandma's Pension Fund?"
Aside from the individual wealthy stockholders, Pension Funds have been the greatest beneficiaries of Corporate Predatory Profits... and USA Politicians from BOTH Parties, since 1980's Reagan Era, especially including Clintonite Neo-Libs have been the Greatest ENABLERs!!!
Where were you, Reich, when Clinton was pandering to the ultra-wealthy and selling American jobs to China and dismantling financial protection laws that led up to the housing collapse?
How dystopian can it be that as a member of that team -- Even NOW the Neo-Libs are promising to Save USA??? ...if wasn’t for Neo-Libs like Pelosi House of Insider Trading... maybe never would have been MAGA?
HOW DO WE GO FORWARD from here? Maybe we just need new leadership?

I also think fiscal conservatism is not always a good thing. I think we instead need to be selective spenders. Not trying to cut costs whereever possible but ask if something is worth investing in and if we say that it is we also should not be stingy. It is often better to invest into something generously and get a good system than being stingy and get something that barely reaches the minimum.
We should not be afraid to spend generously on stuff but only if those things are worth it.

Nothing about the nature of an economy guarantees that it will “bounce back”
from bad news. People who have less money than they had before the crisis
can’t simply “go back to normal” when the crisis is over, they need to deal with
the fact that they are poorer now by restraining their spending. But because my
spending is your income and vice-versa, that collective restraint will keep holding
the economy back. If the coronavirus crisis were a uniquely American
phenomenon, Americans could get out of the jam by selling things to foreigners -
but the whole world is basically in the same boat. If interest rates were high, the
Fed could make them low making debt more affordable and generating a surge
of debt-financed activity - but rates were low when the crisis began and they’ve
already been cut to zero. That essentially leaves us where we were in the Great
Depression, with an economy that’s going to be depressed simply because it’s
been depressed. People with no money can’t buy things, and in a global downturn
there’s nowhere to turn for customers.

You should learn from the French: they build barricades with the same ease a beaver builds a dam, it's in their DNA.

I highly recommend reading the book - it’s excellent and a must read if you are committed to being part of the change. I think another tactic in this “revolution” is to return to small business. That was also how the middle class grew. We have an entirely different tool than they had in earlier generations - the internet. Now, a small business can not only sell in their community, but they can offer products and services to a global audience. In tandem with RR’s systemic changes, I believe we can balance that teeter totter back out to benefit everyday people. It still requires the conscious support of people to maybe pay a few dollars more than they pay “the big guys” but remember, Amazon ALSO allows small vendors to sell - there are distribution channels available, and where they don’t exist, we should create new ones that are co-operatives that benefit individuals, not big business. Just my two cents. I’m a business consultant who worked many years in Corp. America at the Corporate level and watched exactly what RR describes in this video as well as in his video “Everything you need to know about the new economy”- I saw our company shift from being about ALL stakeholder value, to SHAREHOLDER value. I participated in US plant closings and new operations growing in regions around the world. I’m no economist, or political expert - but I know how business runs. I’ve solved problems at a global level and when I left I was well taken care of - no complaints.... but that’s not how it goes for the average worker. I’m on a mission now to help small businesses, and to help people start seeing how they might use their talents and skills to create another income stream so that they aren’t solely reliant on their JOB. These are really challenging times, and everyone has an opportunity now to see how unstable their livelihood can be if you depend only on wages. It’s possible, and I’m out here fighting the good fight :-). We must unite! That is key to all that RR is saying.

The ballot box: The corporate wing of the DNC worked together to take out Bernie and even Bernie had careerist DNC members in his campaign. You have a choice between two members of the same corporate party. Even so called progressives didn’t fight the first stimulus package to fight against bailouts. You are being lied to. 2nd. Wall Street boycotts. Yeah that’s not gonna happen. You are seeing it now with stocks rising with more unemployment. 3rd. Consumer boycotts. All those brands you love so much are all owned by around 5 big companies. If you want real change, you must fight for it and you must fight dirty. Not on the rules of the people in power. Amazingly done in twelve minutes. Today it’s every man for himself, or I should say every person for themself. I am retired and I know a lot of you feel like slaves or serfs and that is justified. Just remember, the oligarchy cannot exist without us. That’s not an answer, but please realize, you have more power than you may realize. That’s why we are brainwashed into separatism as mentioned in the video.
I would love to see a peaceful, but massive rebellion across America stating that we are onto your scheme, we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore. I don’t think it will happen because everyone can’t just stop going to work, paying their mortgages or rent and live off the land. The land? It isn’t ours, however, unionizing, voting and contacting our representatives is legal and possible on a massive scale.
The problems may have been created by a small percentage of people, but if you want the solution, look in the mirror and organize with others. It does make a difference. I know it’s difficult, but it can be done. I have seen big changes in my lifetime because of people like you. I wish it wasn’t a constant battle - it just is. I’m sorry, I don’t like it either.
I’m sick and on my way out and I am encouraged by new generations fighting the good fight. Communication is essential, yet action is necessary. Bitching online is a fart in the wind, it dissipates quickly and has no real effect.

And with millions of federal employees to support - you must be kidding. We are distracted but supposedly we MUST support government employees?
And just where would the taxes come from without corporations and other businesses?
The BLUE state of Oregon begged Nike to stay in their state AND they reduced their taxes and made a deal behind closed doors.
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK ALL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES ARE NEEDED?
I WAS IN A GOVERNMENT UNION AND WE ALL KNEW WHICH PEOPLE WERE NEEDED. THE UNIONS KNEW, THE AGENCY HEADS KNEW AND THE EMPLOYEES KNEW. BECAUSE EVERYONE GOT A LIST AND WHATEVER NUMBER YOU GOT SHOWED HOW NECESSARY YOU WERE. ABOUT ONE-THIRD COULD HAVE BEEN LAID OFF.

Government employees are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Putting unqualified people into positions that require qualified people is why we are in this position. You kinda twisted the story and truth. Allowing politicians to do insider trading is the problem. They vote to fill their pockets, which is a form of corporate greed. Pass a few laws that would stop the politicians from insider trading would be a good start. It's easy to do and you won't have to preach your socialist agenda!

@@joenewmeyer8358 I agree. I first went to work for a state college - when my husband was going back to school for his second degree. I had lived in Hawaii and needed an indoor job because I had no immunity and kept getting sick at my other job. Three weeks of work I missed due to illness. So, I applied to work indoors at the college. The supervisor didn't even like the system that the state agencies used - of asking for more than they needed. She thought it was a terrible waste. The unions know of waste, too. Because each employee in my union at the top agency in the state for welfare had been given a number. The number indicated how necessary we were for the agency. The middle managers were a huge waste. They often had very few employees to manage and many were college grads as I was and we weren't running to a manager every five minutes. In fact, my manager said in a meeting that I only went to him once in a year for advice.

Our Founders, by brilliant design, gave the People power to protect ourselves from tyranny-for all time. Civic action by the People is required. Such action does not require vast amounts of time, or even any $. We can each choose something to work on, and ask our friends and families to do the same. We can support down ballot Progressives to forward our agenda. Taking part to clean up, restore, safeguard and reclaim our rightful place in our govt. of, for and by the People is entirely do-able. Watch Sen. Sanders' videos, one in particular is a 15 min, excellent work by one individual: It is titled, "Bernie Sanders: A Presidential Comparison,". In it, we get to see and hear, for ourselves, as some of our best Presidents faced, and faced down, some of the same threats we face today. Enlightening, encouraging. Should be viral. This isn't Europe, we don't have a significant number of people sitting around on the doll, we barely allow the disabled and retirees to get by without working. I get that middle class people work too. I get that many in the middle class are struggling to get by and take care of their families. He means well, but using that phrasing risks tying into long standing myths and dog whistles (ones which have been used by the super-rich to divide the rest of us from each other) about how non-white poor people are poor because they're lazy, _whereas_ poor whites are hard working.
