- The Minnesota Timberwolves are struggling, and many fans are blaming Rudy Gobert for much of their woes. But people fail to understand that the Gobert trade was one of many moves meant to mask franchise player Karl-Anthony Towns' weaknesses, and that the real problem with the Timberwolves is their insistence on building a franchise around KAT.

I’m glad you made this, because I keep seeing all the blame going to Gobert, and it just makes me wonder if ppl actually know what it takes to play good defense. He’s had some pretty bad moments, but most of the time he’s caught out of position it’s him being forced to support a teammates lack of coordination. It’s like the coaches aren’t adjusting what their team should do based off of what they are showing. Why is DLo chasing a man that’s already beat him around the screen. He doesn’t even try to slow the screener. At that point he might as well just Run down the court. It’s like they don’t have a real scheme at all. To me it just seems like, they knew they were bad on defense, and they thought let’s just grab a good defender and everything is going to be good, and put a “good” defender in a shit defense where he can’t concentrate on doing his assignment, and can’t trust his teammates to do theirs.
Exactly! Very well said. Gobert is in a lose-lose where he gets shit on regardless of the outcome because he's expected to cover for everyone else's deficiencies when he's supposed to be your defensive anchor at the rim this whole time
100% this. If only people could see how much Gobert had to cover for Ant's def lapse. It's crazy.
All that proves is that his defense isn't good enough to cover for the mistakes of others, which is kind of what makes him a good NBA player. He doesn't do anything on offense. Being just a good defender won't cut it.
@@WillToNihilsm It doesn’t. You can’t cover for three bad defenders at once. What it means is his defense isn’t good enough to make up the difference on THAT team. There are very few players you can just plug into any system, with any 5 guys and them be efficient. Rudy Gobert was never a scorer sure, but their offenses play style doesn’t really take advantage of having a big lanky athletic guy who can’t set up his own buckets, but they bought him knowing that. On top of that the Timberwolves seem incredibly demoralized.

So true while Rudy could be one of the problems, the bigger problem is why they would go after him (because they think KAT will be better with him) so the Front office of Minnesota and KAT have the biggest blame to take.

This showed exactly why other NBA stars do not fuck with KAT, Booker, or Russell. Immense talent and confidence, but they are all front runners. As soon as another player/team can match their talent and game plan, they fold.

As a Pels fan, it's pretty sweet to hear Dlo's comment about football, just salty for playing bad basketball, but it sucks that the Wolves are struggling like this despite the obvious talent they have on the team.

I think the issue is KAT. Guy has been average this season given he would have less defensive respobility because of Gobert and allowing to focus more on offense.

KAT's shooting struggles this year are in large part due to the major lack of spacing that Gobert causes. The looks he gets just aren't as good as the looks he got in previous seasons. He's definitely not a player that a team should build around, but trying to use his shooting splits this season as an example of why is a bit dishonest.
Hard to say he has shooting troubles when hes been injured half the season so far.
That is true but in theory, KAT should not be just labeled as an over payed stretch big. Needs to do more as one of the most expensive and paid players for the wolves 🐺this season

Wolves fan since 1993 here. KAT = Every other good player on a bad team player we have had. ANT on the other hand is special. The fact that our front office didn't notice that as soon as last year or even his rookie year is insane to me. Rudy is just playing bad because he has been playing nonstop basketball for 1.5 years now with no off season. Hes tired (which sucks)

I usually like when a young team try to get a veteran piece, however they needed someone else than Rudy, they should have try to remove Russell with some picks from those they used for Gobert
This trade has been really bad. They traded Gobert for their shooters they had last year and some of them having been playing well in Utah and they gave up multiple first round pick. Rudy is so limited in his game that it’s hard to figure what his role either defense or offense. That’s why they traded him. Karl and Rudy on the same team isn’t working out well. This team pretty got worse from last year and didn’t really improve. They lost all their shooters from the trade and are limited on what they have right now in this roster.
Biggest loss was Vanderbilt. He is one of a handful of players who actually play defense in the entire NBA. Honestly believe Vanderbilt is probably more effective on the floor than Gobert.

Kevon looney and Draymond can’t shoot but kevon looney guard the 5 while Draymond is the mobile 4.

So, Vanderbilt is the mobile 4. Since KAT can’t defend the rim, Vanderbilt was the one carrying his ass not the defensive end.
Something nobody mentions: timeline of the team. ANT was going wild last year and they had really good momentum, but had a sorry exit in the playoffs because of a lot of other players; to take a 30 year old, one dimensional center after that run is beyond me. They still have a chance to pick it up, but with DLo being inconsistent and KAT moving strange in the playoffs, there doesn’t seem to be much hope.
Can we take a moment to acknowledge how spoiled KAT is? Bro portrays himself as an all star (which he can be) but has no heart and it shows. I didn’t like how he called out ANT about Popeyes when apparently, he didn’t even talk to ANT about it personally. Like why lol you’re literally a grown ass man stop instigating

Kat and Dlo simply do not care about playing winning basketball, they putting up empty stats with zero defensive effort, earning great money and life is good. Instead of being called out and punished for it, their franchise is actually rewarding them for some reason, now they even brought Rudy so he can be the scapegoat for those guys. And you can bet that players who dont play defense like that cant wait to point fingers and blame somebody else. Trading Dlo should be no1 priority and getting some vet PG who is actually a good defender and vocal leader, otherwise they have no realistic chance of being consistently good

I really don’t understand why people will try to find a way to build around KAT which don’t get me wrong is a pretty damn amazing player but if you have a young explosive guard/forward like Anthony Edwards, you should be looking to build around him and stop scapegoating the big piece that you got, who is a generation of defensive talent, who apparently cannot shoot which is not his strong suit. However, people will always look for someone to blame for team’s shortcomings actually f*** that an organizations shortcomings. Sometimes best thing to do is have a look, and I mean a long look at the mirror and to actually evaluate what you have done before you start pointing fingers.
This is 100% on the TWOLVES front office.

Rudy is definitely being scapegoated but he's also a huge part of their struggles.. but I also very much agree with your take, Kat doesn't seem to have improved his game at all for the past few years now (aside from his 3 point shooting). His decision making is terrible his defense is lacking sometimes even his offense is clumsy. You could also definitely say the same thing with DLO. I'm not a huge fan of Anthony Edwards but I feel bad for the guy, he's good but his team is slowly if not already ruined.
This is all on the TWolves front office. IDK what they were smoking to give up so much for Gobert, especially with the line-up after that which he doesn't fit into.

I think there's a difference between scapegoating Rudy and scapegoating the trade and I think it's super fair to scapegoat the trade. It didn't take a genius to see that KAT isn't a 4 a d that bringing in a 5 like Rudy would not help, especially when you're sending away so much.

Trade Kat as soon as possible. Nobody will take Rudy for a fair value. Kat will get them some draft picks. Let Ant be the main guy. Otherwise you’re stuck with an awkward center line up with no draft picks and no money to sign anyone in free agency. There is going to be a lot of really good players going into free agency within the next two years. You don’t want to be stuck with a bad line up and unable to capitalize on upcoming free agents. You really can’t make any meaningful adjustments without any money to spend or draft picks.

He's still being used as the scapegoat. KAT isn't being blamed for his issues on defense. He isn't a good defender to begin with, but look how he plays defense when Rudy is on the floor. KAT still wedges because he's so used to the center position, he has difficulty adjustments when he plays PF. If he's the lone center he has more success, same with Rudy. But when they're both on the floor, they aren't a good pair.
