I love the way that when every time the player gets a speed boost on the Apple ll GS version, the whole game speeds up, including the enemies AND the music. Would've been better than the arcade version if not for the strange speed up issue. Honourable mention to the C64- the music was an excellent rendition.
The Apple II GS version I was impressed with. Almost like the arcade version, but the screen scrolling was insane. It was actually better than the original that way imho.
@@puppylove3781very impressed by the Apple II version. I'd say it is the most superior in every way aside from the music but that also comes down to personal preference.
I just got a copy of this game for my Master System last week.. Always wanted a copy.. So far i can get to the lvl6 boss.. Game is tough! lol.. Gotta say that Spectrum port is pretty impressive.
I wish you'd included the hero dying, because I always thought it was a really cool effect in the original game how his body kind of disintegrates with that dramatic cry, and I would like to see the other versions' attempts at that. (I admit I did not watch every moment of this video, though, so for all I know, you did die at some point.)
ZX version own some kind black & white Conan comic magic, sounds world are very mystique (music & fx) and this "Thanatos" (1986 video game from Durell Software) style pumping heart on left lower corner is cool too.
That can't be the GG version, its resolution is too high - looks more like the SMS version without the FM soundtrack. I definitely agree that the DOS and II GS versions are really good. The MS version is pretty decent, though I don't know why there wasn't a port to the Mega Drive.
@@javaykirk2688 That doesn't sound feasible, given the Master System's usual resolution is 256x192, whereas the Game Gear operates at 160x144. This also means that the screen would be closer to a square in terms of output - 10:9 ratio instead of 4:3.
@@javaykirk2688 Hmm... apparently there are a few SMS games that were almost unchanged before being ported to the GG, and lose only 8 pixels either side of the image on the screen, but they have to use the original palettes in order to work (I assume this is how the Master Gear works when directly playing SMS titles). You learn something new every day, it seems - thanks! :) I presume that the loss of pixels is limited to the screen only and as such emulation will show everything?
@@stephandolby Yeah, the GG can easily run SMS games. There is actually an adapter called the Master Gear where you can put Master System carts into the Game Gear and the game runs fine.
The SMS version is such a gem with fast scrolling, detailed graphics, awesome music, i didn't appreciate it enough when i was playing it with my brothers at the time. Apple IIGS seems really nice too. Pity there is no Amiga version.
The IIGS version was an incredible feat of coding from John Brooks and didn't even need an accelerator. Apparently he was given a VHS of game play, and he developed the port from there. The only reason the IIGS port was missing a level was because it wasn't on the VHS tape
One of my favorite arcade games. Had the master system version and now play the arcade version.. Rastan 2 was horrible, imo. Would love to see a remake of original.
Cant believe they didnt put it on the NES, Not a problem for me as I had a SMS and an NES, SMS version was and is a great version of the game, just got the arcade version on the Switch.
You can even hear the opera voices singers singing (through the electronic arcade sounds) 0:12🎵 " *here come thy great BarBariAaan...(deep voice haller part **0:16**)..RRRAASTAAAann* !!" 🎶
I bought this on the Amstrad CPC when it came out and it was a let down. Nice graphics as usual with Imagine/Ocean but sluggish, no music... But that wasn't the worst part, that was tolerable especially after Rygar being much worse than this. The worst part was that the game crashed at the end of level 2 or 3. Master System version was very nice though.
@@retrosutra It was brutal in those days, you bought a version of your favourite arcade game and it had a very high risk of being horrible. I don't even think they ever officially patched it at the time, there was an interesting playthrough from Xyphoe on this, and he managed to get some info from the original developer, who said his game worked when he did it but then something weird must have happened during the duplication phase.
They all look like 💩 except the Apple one and it runs too fast and has dumb music. I really wanted a faithful port back then and there’s no reason the Genesis and Turbografx couldn’t have done it 😞
The different attempts at capturing that iconic theme are easily my favorite thing about this video.
My thoughts exactly

This game actually had quite a few really good ports I never got to play. Those DOS and Apple II GS versions are really nice !

Taito should've put the original Rastan on the Mega Drive instead of Rastan Saga II (Nastar Warrior). The PC and II GS ports look very good.
I agree!
I really liked the arcade music. So often I find myself prefering the SID incarnations, but this one played to the strengths of the arcade chip.
That C64 music was pumping! It only had 16 colors to work with so its impressive for what it is.
some very nice 4-way parallax on the zx spectrum
No idea how they did it.

Considering the Spectrum’s technical limitations the port actually looks pretty good.
Didn't know this was on C64. Would have got it back in the day if I had known...
You would have been disappointed because it had a really bad bug in it making it impossible to complete.
The ZX Spctrum is realy cool version :)

Surprised it runs that smooth
1St Time i played this was on the SEGA Master system i like both the arcade version and the Sm
Good job! Nice comparison video. It was said that Conan the Barbarian was the inspiration for Rastan.

The game gear version is the exact same as the master system version.

Wow, no substitute for the good ol' arcade on this one! IIGS is probably the closest although it seemed to run way too fast.

Damn, SMS, not bad!
Wow, really dig that Speccy conversion
Yo jugué a la versión de la Master System, muy buena versión, pero jamás me la llegue a pasar, me resultaba muy difícil
También me ha parecido una buena conversión (bastante libre, todo hay que decirlo, por los numerosos cambios respecto a la recreativa).
Notice the Argonath in the background. Those are the ones in the Lord of the Rings movie adaptation. And this game was made before 1987.
Apple2 looks so good but the background music is weak and muted. I'm surprised how well the GG/Master System ports came out.
It’s crazy that the master system 2 has the best melody and sounds
Holy shit, that Apple 2 version makes the rest look slow and easy... I like!
The IIGS version was an incredible feat of coding from John Brooks and didn't even need an accelerator. Apparently he was given a VHS of game play, and he developed the port from there. The only reason the IIGS port was missing a level was because it wasn't on the VHS tape
That Spectrum port very impressive graphics flawless and music and moved faster than the arcade version.
A Jamaican played the C64 version up to the point where it was uncompletable due to a bug. Then he shouted, "Fucking RASSS!"
So many memories
Even if the Master system version comes from the Arcade version, I prefer the 8-bit version, it is easier and more pleasant.
The Amstrad version is extremely painful to watch.

The Comm64 version of the stage music is badass.

This game really needs a homebrew Genesis port.
why is the arcade version from 1987 the best looking from all of them
Consoles were weaker than the coin ops.
Still waiting for it on Hamster Arcade Archives!
