  • So a few weeks ago I did a video where I was trying to use Apple‘s new MagSafe charger with a defender Pro. It didn’t really work out well and otterbox contacted me and sent me this defender XT model. If you watch the video you’ll see why I don’t particularly care for the OtterBox defender XT model.
Testing out if the new Apple iphone 12 magsafe wireless charger will work with the otterbox defender. We are using the new 20W usbc wall charger and the new magnetic wireless charger.

What I don’t understand is why can’t otter box just make a wireless charger for its defender case? Or even include a magnetic seal in the f’ing thing. That way you can put it on a pad and charge the phone. Plus you can drop your phone 20 ft and not have to replace the screen or a broken phone

I just went thorugh this, saw your video and bought the XT. I have an iPhone 12 mini. I know it only charges at 12 watts, but it is crazy slow and bad. I cannot find anything online to see what others are experiencing for charge times WITH a case. I am not even getting 50% in 6 hours. I know that's not right. What do others get on a 12MINI (only)? I just need to see what another user is getting for recharge times. Thanks for the great videos and any help others can give.

I would definitely go for the harder material - and the MagSafe feature - you can charge it with no issues. A better option is Aramid Fibre TBH, it’s hard than steel and has much better charging. Plastic is never going to work very well for wireless charging, but metals are.
What you have on the Defender is not rubber, it’s TPU, essentially a soft plastic. It does work well with metals to give a bit of cushion on drops but you want the back to be a bit harder since TPU and plastic can slide right off the glass. The hard plastics do not scratch very easily, TPU does and can get stuck in pockets etc.
I have my eye on Defender XT with Magsafe, that’s a great combination especially if your device is not under warranty. Also the Fusion Weave Aramid Fibre produced by Pitaka is a great option, the Pro version uses some TPU for extra drop protection, or the MagEZ designs are minimalistic, as if you are not even using a case

The XT is much like my otterbox pursuit case. The plastic is more durable I think in the long run. I’ve been using defender case since iPhone 4 days. The problem I have with rubber is that it gets loose eventually so the fitting is no longer the same as day 1. What I don’t like with the plastic back is that it has no grip at all.

Makes the case really ugly looking and it doesn’t feel as nice anymore. And once a line starts to peel off, you have to remove it so it’s not loose and hanging all over the place.

Thanks. I went with that case just because of your post. I'm a bit concerned of the short lip because it's for my friend, and he once broke his screen three times in the same year. He lasted about 18 months on his iphone XS before cracking it right before his vacation. I've encouraged him to get the tempered glass screen protectors, but he always takes them off. They make the screen less responsive, which I agree but it's a necessary tradeoff. The 13 is the first phone he's bought brand new of the current model in many years, so I hope it lasts. Always went with Otterboxes, but decided to switch it up this time.

    @georgesmith4639 Před 7 měsíci

At the end you make it sound like your phone is seriously less protected with the XT, even though the overall thickness and corner protection look the same. So does the protection given to the camera since both have similar raised rim. A phone in a case like these is going to hit the corners or rim edges 100% of the time when dropped on flat surfaces. There may be a slight difference between the back side protection in case you dropped the phone flat onto a rock, but cracked glass on the back doesn't affect usability nearly as much as cracked glass on the front and neither of these cases do anything about that. To me its worth the tradeoff of slightly less protection to the relatively unimportant back glass to get the magsafe conveniences.

I just got an XT and I really like it for the following reasons:
    1) Firstly, the clearance between the edge of the case and the camera lenses is the same for the Defender XT and other Defender models. Now, I will grant that the Defender Pro lies flat, while the XT does not. But, I would argue that the XT provides better protection to the camera lenses because the clearance is the same and the XT does not lie flat, allowing the lenses to be angled away from the surface the phone is lying upon.
    2) The outside, as you mentioned, is plastic. This is one of the reasons why I purchased the XT; because the regular Defender series has the silicone/rubbery outer shell, which inevitably gets stretched-out and loose and floppy after time. (Also, I am neurotic and tend to fidget with it, pulling the outer shell off and putting it back on, which only accelerates the floppyness of the outer shell of the case.) The XT does not have this problem.
It would seem that the standard Defender and Defender Pro do offer more shock absorption than the XT, as they have the foam pad that you show, as well as the silicone/rubbery outer shell. It would also seem that your opinions are in the majority, as the XT has not been offered for the iPhone 13, and therefore likely will not be offered for any future iPhone models.
I think they each have their pros and cons. Personally, I will not be returning my Defender XT.

I don't understand how you came to the conclusion that the Defender XT sku sucks specifically because "the back is hard plastic." The Defender Pro sku has a few milimeters of rubber on the back, and rubber is a stronger electrical insulator than the polycarbonate on the back of the XT sku.
Even if the Defender Pro's rubber back weren't thick enough to prevent wireless charging outright, the phone might still refuse to accept any charge that _does_ make it through due to the rubber limiting the input current. And that's assuming that the phone's charge controller even _accepts_ the charge at all, which is not a given when the input current is too low. Even if _did,_ however, it'd charge _very_ slowly, and _very_ inefficiently.
If Otterbox thought they could support _good_ (or even _decent_ ) wireless charging with the Defender Pro sku, they wouldn't have gone through the expense of developing, marketing, and distributing the Defender XT sku. They knew it wouldn't fly with customers who tried to use their fancy new $60-$80 wireless magsafe battery packs with their fancy new $60 Defender Pro only to find that the case didn't _actually_ support Magsafe charging worth a damn.
This doesn't come off as an informed review because you missed the point of the XT sku entirely.

I have noticed that, just like screen repairs being offered everywhere, so are the plug replacements. Even battery stores are jumping in. Obviously a problem with their daily usage.

my iPhone 6 charge port still works, I don't think charge port wear is concern unless you have to charge you phone 10 times a day, which then you're battery is going crap long before port does. I'm avoiding wirlesss due to battery wear and heat generated from it. it loses a lot of energy to heat which also means you're phone body is getting heated ups and more bendable.

Still don't understand why people try to do videos one handed - it's just crappy!

I can guarantee it’s not as crappy as the case that I reviewed

Get a camera stand if you are going to try to do reviews on youtube. Congrats on being able to give me motion sickness while sitting on my couch 🤢

YOU DECIDED TO MAKE A LIVING DOING REVIEW VIDEOS AND YOU.CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY A CAMERA STAND? IT IS IRRITATING TO WATCH YOUR DEMO

I don’t make a living doing videos unfortunately for me. The day I did as I didn’t have my camera stands but now I have plenty of them. The fortunate part is or maybe unfortunate as I work 9 to 5.

The defender xt still has rubber and won’t slip off surface like you think. I prefer the xt series because it’s a 2 piece system. I’ve used otterbox since they first came out and the one thing I hate about the regular defender is the rubber stretches with time and doesn’t fit right since it’s a 3 piece system the rubber has no way to keep its shape. With the xt you don’t get that problem.
