  • I'm building a first gen r50 MINI Cooper to be a dedicated track car with hopes of entering in Gridlife's Track Battle time attack series. This car used to have a CVT automatic transmission in it, but with some research and ingenuity, I'm doing a 6 speed manual swap.

    Very excited to see this project! For nearly 20 years I have heard rumors that this swap was impossible.

      It most definitely is possible. 🤙🏻 Thanks for watching.

    Can't wait to follow along! Looking forward to seeing it out on track, I know my R53 has been an absolute blast at HPT and RPM.

    I can’t believe how the US climate makes the underside stay so rust free,mine was just crust

    • @collinryser
      @collinryser  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Not everywhere in the US is like this. It’s still common for cars in regions that get snow to rust out. My car came from California where the paint gets baked off before the chassis rusts.

      @@collinryser that sounds like a whole different amount of problems to us here in the uk 😂

    I had a mini R50 One as my first car and I still own it today.
    I think i know what I'm doing with it now :)

    This is cool. I'm hoping to get my R50 "tail of the dragon" ready for next year. There isn't a lot of R50 videos out there, so this is extremely helpful. I'm in the maintenance phase right now, fixing old work an new problems lol. I planned on swapping out my Midland 5speed for a 6 speed as soon as my funds allow me to. Is there any specific year Getrag to look out for while shopping one ?

    • @collinryser
      @collinryser  Před 2 lety

      The short ratio 6 speed with an LSD from a facelift Cooper S is the one to look for 👌🏻

    Nice man! I have a 2004 R53 that I wanna do some Autocross with. By chance do you know what class the supercharged mini is in??

    • @collinryser
      @collinryser  Před rokem

      It will vary depending on what organization you run with, but classing is generally not necessarily based so much on the specific car but instead the mods that you make to the car. Evan Madore at FCP Euro runs an R53 with Gridlife in Street Modified.

    I have r50 my mom got 700$😂 it’s in bad shape to say the least. Saw the cvt brand new was 6 grand so i did some digging and found you. How hard is the swap for a noob? Will i have cut and modify anything?

    • @collinryser
      @collinryser  Před rokem +1

      Cheap MINIs are the best. No cutting required. Once the automatic transmission is removed, you’ll need a manual transmission and a clutch/flywheel assembly. Then you’ll need to run a fluid line for the clutch and add the correct pedals. Afterwards you’ll have some electrical connectors laying unused in the engine bay, and you’ll have to program the ECU to understand that the car has a manual transmission. It’s a lot of work but with research and the right tools, it just takes time.

    Which class will you be entering?

    • @collinryser
      @collinryser  Před 2 lety +1

      I’m going into Gridlife’s Sundae Cup, aimed at low powered FWD hatchbacks. Mostly Honda Fits, a few Mazda 2s and a couple MINIs.

    I have to say, the fact that it's a multi-part video should be expressed in the title. The ending was very anti-climactic.
