Thanks a lot man! I strongly relate to what you said about the Harry Potter series, I was a big fan of the series when I was 10 or 11 but once I finished it I couldn't get hooked with any other series and I ended up scarcely reading for all my teenage years. It wasn't until I got to college that I got hooked with the Game of Thrones show and tried out the books, and now I have becomed a passionate reader of fantasy again thanks to the amazing work of George RR Martin. I'm about to finish A Dance With Dragons, and I'm planning to pick up the Lord of the Rings next. After that I will try the Wheel of Time, mostly because your recomendations have peaked my interest, and because after watching some of his lectures I think Brandon Sanderson is a wickedly smart guy (and the Wheel of Time could be a gateway to his other work). Again man, a thoulsand thanks!!

Discovered Fantasy through Harry Potter like many. After it ended, I honestly didn’t know what to do. Went to Barnes and Noble, and libraries, and was told to look into Hunger Games and Game of Thrones. I gave hunger games a try, liked it, but never finished (as it just didn’t hit quite the same). Put reading off for about 7-8 years until 2 years ago, when my friend forced me to read The Way of Kings and I fell in love with reading again. I’m caught up on Stormlight and itching for more. So far I’ve read Kings of the Wyld, Skyward, A Game of Thrones (just book 1 for now), and a few Stephen King books. My TBR is stacked and I’m so excited!

    Great video!
I started reading the Belgariad by David Eddings when i was 8 years old (the year it was released 1985) and that began me on a wonderful journey. Other series that were a huge influence as a child were Dragonlance Chronicles (Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman), Dragons of Pern (Anne McCaffery) and Redwall (Brian Jacques).

And now I am reading Wheel of Time and am really enjoying it so far. I definitely recommend this genre and love what it has done for me. I’m so glad I’m a book nerd :)

I was definitely put on the path by lotr.. I read it for the first time in like 7th grade and it blew me away. I had ready Harry potter and absolutely loved it, but Lord of the rings really got me into it. I've read a couple other series including asoiaf, but I want to really delve into the genre. On the second dark tower book, then I'm going to jump into wheel of time! Wish me luck!

I am currently going through _The Shadow of what was Lost_ (as part of Elliot Brook's buddy-read). While I can't yet speak to the quality aspect of recommending it, in terms of writing style I would say this could be a good series for a reader just starting out. It reads very much like a Jordan or Sanderson novel, and it is part of a nice short trilogy.
My foray into reading fantasy started with _The Hobbit_ and _The Chronicles of Narnia,_ and not long after finishing them I read _Lord of the Rings._ I then took about a decade long break and finally read _The Silmarillion_ and _The Children of Húrin,_ then I read _A Song of Ice and Fire_ and _Wheel of Time._ Since my getting back into fantasy I have read 100+ books in the genre, and I am loving it!

I feel like I should like it more! And while I honestly am enjoying it and really glad I'm finally reading it, I find myself not always being super in to it. I think I'm gonna go with WoT after I finish Lotr. It just seems like an incredible series, and with it coming to Amazon soon, I wanna get out in front of it. Thanks for all the vids! Mistborn and Gentlemen's Bastards series is up next, like to read two series at a time just to switch after finishing a book in a series.

I knew the cosmere was a HEAVY investment and so I started with shorter works to see if I like the ideas and writing style that Sanderson brings to the table.

My introduction to fantasy was a short story about a girl meant to be sacrificed to a dragon for being a witch being saved by the dragon. It was in middle school and I was in love with the idea and dragons.. but the story was to short! So I launched into a series.
Tamora Pierce's 'Protector of the Small' , then Lane Linskold's Firekeeper Saga, Then I found Mercedes Lackey and the work she did with James Mallory (the back-bones of my personal library)

This video was so helpful. I’ve been eyeing the First Law trilogy for almost 3 years now since my high school junior year math teacher who loves reading and loves fantasy recommended to me. She saw me reading Throne of Glass book three, which I think was the turning point for that series and really made me interested in fantasy while not being too intense, and she said First Law was similar but much darker and more mature and I was immediately interested. I just need to find it somehow.
As for what I’m currently reading, I’m not actually reading anything quite yet but tomorrow I will be starting Crier’s War by Nina Varela which is a young adult sci-fantasy set in a world where cyborgs were created to be servants to humans, but the cyborgs, or Automae as they’re called, have risen up against humans and taken over, enslaving humans as they became more advanced. Essentially, an Automae girl named Crier who is in charge of Ayla, a human girl, has started to fall for Ayla and realizes that the War of Kinds was all for nothing and her father was completely wrong in his actions. It seems, from the reviews I’ve read, to be a pretty light epic fantasy that will be easy to get into so I guess I might recommend it to fantasy beginners like myself, but I’ve also heard that the world is beautifully and richly imagined and that the conflicts are extremely well-developed and executed, and there’s even a timeline of the country of Rabu’s history and it shows how the timelines are split between eras and start over from year zero in each era when something major happens. It seems like it won’t be too hard to get into from the plot description but I’m not totally sure, as I haven’t read it yet lol.

Good suggestions I'm downloading while you talk, there's so many great books, it's overwhelming.
I might try the Witcher, I disliked the game, loved the shows. I just started on the game of thrones, haven't watched the show, and not deep enough to really tell if I like it yet, but it always takes me a while to get into a book, also cloud Atlas is on my list, fantastic movie.
I'm basically just getting started in the fantasy adventure genre. I read a couple Harry Potter books when I was a kid and devoured most of the goosebumps and fear streets books, but as an adult I really only read non fiction and a couple others here and there like the Da Vinci code. Now I've started I had know idea what I was missing out on! It's like every book I read is 1000 times better than watching the highest budget movie, and there always more.

I just found your channel and am really enjoying the content. I’ve read most of your gateway recommendations and I agree with them. I would add Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffery. Great world building and adventure. The Xanth and Apprentice series both by Piers Anthony. His writing is very light smart/silly but not exactly politically correct (hey it was the ‘80s). I read LOTR as a teen and I’ll re-read it every couple of years and I find it grows with me with every re-read. I’ll pick-up and understand more of the underlying themes and concepts with every reading. The last time I read it, the chapter on the Council of Elrond struck me as pure writing artistry; the way everything is structured and how things are revealed is pure mastery. I’m still not at the point where I read all the longer poetry but I’ve never been a poetry person.

I think I was pretty lucky by growing up with a love for a mixture of mythology, medieval, and the olde English language. I started with Narnia, Harry Potter, and the Hobbit (not LoTR). And because I enjoyed all of those elements, and my family pretty much lived at the library, I was able to pick and choose for myself what I enjoyed and grow into the meatier side of fantasy such as the Wheel of Time. Chronicles of Prydain, Redwall, Narnia, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Roger Lanclyn Green's take on King Arthur and Robin Hood really fueled my love for the genre from elementary age onward. I love the aspect of world building and all of these things made me start writing stories of my own as a teenager. I never finished any of them and I've been crafting my own fantasy world for close to 10 years at this point but can never settle on the exact details that I want to create because I there are so many influences that I want to incorporate but not copy. It makes it difficult to the point that I may never finish crafting my fantasy world, let alone write any complete stories within that world.

Thanks for this video Daniel. I’m in my mid 40’s and am only now getting into the modern Fantasy genre with gusto. Of course I read LoTR and Hobbit and all the C.S. Lewis works as a teen, but Game of Thrones has peaked my curiosity about what’s current. So here’s where I’m at.....over the last several months I’ve read All of Robin Hobb (loved it), all Sebastián De Castell (Greatcoats Series), and am just finishing All the Ryria Revelations and Chronicles by Michael J. Sullivan. I was going to next go with Wheel of Time. I know it’s huge, but I believe I’ve been adequately “warmed up” lol. I have a couple concerns about doing so. I do easily tire of numerous story lines, especially where keeping characters straight is a challenge. Some WoT reviewers do add this cautionary note. Secondly, while I like detail, it sounds like Jordan takes this to the Nth degree going on for pages. Must Epic by necessity also mean slow moving??
Any way those are my thoughts. I’d appreciate yours. :) Thanks so much for your Chanel and all you do!
