I tell people the same thing with catching mice in my century home, and also talk about the disease they carry plus the feces and the smell. (rats and mice constantly urinate). It's so interesting to me how the mink goes down into the holes and is surrounded by like 6 rats, kills one, and the others just kinda hang out like "hey what's going on here?"

    • @freaki0734
      @freaki0734 Před 2 lety +19

      probably makes sense in the wild where a mink would only kill one of them at a time

    • @OrganizedChaos75
      @OrganizedChaos75 Před 2 lety +97

      For one, it's dark in those holes and a rat's night vision is quite limited. Rats & mice rely heavily on their whiskers to feel their way around. Side note: That's why it's a good idea to place snap traps along a wall, because they're using the wall to guide themselves. It's likely some weren't even aware of the mink. One is seen turning around and bumping right into the mink, then meeting his demise.
      Also, they're aware of the danger outside of their hiding place. Multiple "predators" waiting for them outside as opposed to a single one inside that is going after another rat. They have no idea that predator (dog & mink) is trained to kill, then keep killing, instead of stopping & feeding on the kill like a wild predator would do.

    • @wayneegli8379
      @wayneegli8379 Před 2 lety +64

      @@OrganizedChaos75 Mink are notorious surplus killers. In the wild, they will make multiple kills. It is for this reason that a mink or any other mustelidae is so hated on many farms eapecially around chickens. It is this surplus killing mode that makes minks such good rat hunters for Joseph.

      Joe has explained in the past that minks are an unknown quantity to rats. They don't know how to react to one invading their tunnels, not when they're overwhelmed by the terror of humans and dogs, which they do have flight instincts against.
      They're the inverse of muskrats, for whom minks are a long-standing nemesis. They get so fluffed up when flushed out and chased by a mink that they'll approach humans and dogs without thinking.

    I’ve seen this video about a week ago. It seemed familiar at first, but the witch laughing and Joe catching three rats and asking for the live cage made me remember. I’m a pretty recent subscriber so that’s why it was new to me a week ago and easy for me to remember. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Your animals are perfectly trained for their jobs. It's amazing how your dogs works in combination with your minks with out either harming the other only going after the prat that you are hunting. I was just wondering if you had ever tried training and using dog breeds that are raters or mousers? Example chihuahuas, mini pins, or weininers. Don't get me wrong the dogs you do have work with you are beautiful indoors and personally along with being Loyal and driven to please you. It's great to watch all of them work along side each other and you. Also I was wondering where you find your dogs? Are they rescues like your mink?

    It’s crazy to me the rats don’t gang up on the mink. They just sit there while the mink tears the other rats apart.

      @TheKajunkat Před 2 lety +1

      Joseph mentioned it in an earlier video that the rats have never seen a mink before because the bird cages are predator proofed from the outside. Thy probably just think it is a bigger rat until it is too late.

    • @JosephCartertheMinkMan
      @JosephCartertheMinkMan  Před 2 lety +4

      Rats don't work cooperatively. It's every rat for themselves. They will happily kill and eat each other every chance they get! Why risk their life to try and save another rat that they would happily kill and eat themselves if given the chance?

    • @bobphillips3888
      @bobphillips3888 Před 2 lety

      @@JosephCartertheMinkMan makes sense. But I thought they would attack the mink just to save themselves down the line. Guess I’m giving the rats too much credit.

    • @tonedecoder633
      @tonedecoder633 Před rokem

      @@JosephCartertheMinkMan Hi. Interesting video, and it is great to see rats being dealt with in a humane fashion. However, the statement they will "happily kill each other every chance they get" is simply not true. Apart from the fact they do not particularly seek out meat, and prefer grains/vegetables as their main food source, rats are very social animals which exhibit a high degree of empathy to other rats, as do mice. They also develop very strong bonds with each other (and their owners) and will mourn cagemates when they pass away, refusing food and treats, and sitting glumly for anywhere up to a week. It makes no sense for a rat to exhibit a high level of violence to other rats, as anti-social animals will generally be ostracized from the group (and likely die). One of the reasons rats are the most successful non-human mammal is because they co-operate so well (along with their incredible physical abilities, high intelligence, neuro-plasticity and ability to adapt). Female rats and mice strongly co-operate to raise many more young than individual animals could, often helping to raise the young of other animals unrelated to them. Of course when food shortages strike rats will eat each other, but then again, so will dogs. I mean, dogs have been known to eat their owners on occasion ...

    Got a rat family of around 12 members last winter, I had 3 dogs back then, 2 silkie terriers in the inside and one mix between foxhound/beagle which lived on the yard.
    The rats couldn't get a single break inside the house as Charlie and Manolo (the terriers) could get anywhere with their size and absolutely obliterate any rat they could get their jaw on. If I recall correctly they killed around 8 overall.
    As for Lucas (the foxhound/beagle) he got the honor of finding the main nest on the yard, killed around 4 of them and that was about it for our rat problem, I woke up to the fuss in the backyard and saw the 4 rats aligned on the door with Lucas sitting proudly at the side, safe to say he had a lot of treats, belly rubs and extra walking hours during that week, same for the other 2.
    Sadly, Lucas died 2 months ago due to the old age of 16 (almost 17) and a tumor on his leg that was barely visible but was fast on extending to the rest of his body. I just hope he's happy hunting birds and rats to his heart content as he always did in life. Charlie and Manolo are fortunately still relatively young and healthy.
