  • In 1979 as Artistic Director of the Summerfolk Festival I decided that the festival ought to record part of the event, partly for posterity, and partly for the enjoyment of people who could just not get enough of Summerfolk!
We set up a very basic operation to record a stereo signal from the board, and then acquired permission from the artists whose performances we decided to use. Those were the days of vinyl LPs and that was the format in which the recording was released.
This was ostensibly to be my last year as Artistic Director of the festival and the LP was met with some indifference by the subsequent administration. While it was put on sale for a couple of years, by the time CDs began to rule, the album was sidelined and most of the stock discarded in one of the office moves.
Through the vicissitudes of my life I managed to carry an unopened copy of the record and decided to open it and transfer this month (July 2021). The very first time the album was played was on a USB turntable making the transfer clean and free from over modulation.
Much thanks goes to the performers who participated: David Essig; Hang The Piper; Tihuantinsuyo; Eric Andersen; Sally Rogers; Ryan's Fancy; Bob Carpenter; Bruce Steele; Barde; Roy Bookbinder; and The Humber River Valley Boys.
I resisted the temptation to EQ the tracks and left them in the rough and ready. You will not be disappointed.
Emily Freidman of Come For To Sing Magazine in her magazine referred to Summerfolk as "love on the lake." You can just feel the power and energy in these performances, energy that has catapulted Summerfolk into its 46th year and thriving.
I hope that all will support Summerfolk as it endures through the Covid pandemic in whatever form it will take.
