I just jammed a screwdriver in canister as far as I could and used vacuum to pull all the stuff out of it and hose to the tank. Worked like a champ and cost $0.00. Thanks for your video

Could you further describe exactly where you jammed the screwdriver? Did you pull it and jam it down one of the manufactured holes vac it out and reinstall or...? Did you do it while it was still in place? Apperciate the follow up.

First, thanks for the effort in this video, it helped tremendously! However, even after the canister and vent solenoid re-locator were installed I still had the filling issue. It turned out to be carbon in the line still. Most people drop the tank but this is NOT needed. If you take the fitting back off with the 90 degree elbow, white in color you can suck the carbon out with a shop vac. I taped the shop vac onto the line, had my wife loosen and tighten the gas cap every 5 seconds or so and could watch the tank flex with suction so you know it was working. I then rattled the line as best as I could with the room you have and low and behold I got several bunches of the particles out, about a cup or cup and a half in total. Issue is fixed. Hope this saves some of you time and effort. This was on a 2007 Yukon Denali. Regards!
excellent, yeah we had two diagnose this issue as several other shops checked it out and couldn't fix it, so removing the tank to inspect and figure out what was happening was required. Now that people see where the carbon pieces get stuck, you may be able to clean them out and replace then canister and be done.

APDTY Thanks. That is great to know. I just replaced the purge valve and the solenoid on my 2005 Tahoe. The solenoid matched the OEM one. I didn’t know about the new version and AutoZone didn’t mention it. I hope I don’t have to replace the canister, but if I do, I’ll do the shop vac trick you described.

diesel2421 Me too! After I finally got it off, I discovered that the hose and elbow are too tight to allow room to pull the fitting off the solenoid after releasing the tabs. It would have been easier, I believe, to have pulled the solenoid off the bracket, then pry off the clips.
This guy knows his stuff, fixed my 05 z71 in no time!!

Thanks this fixed my issue, videos like this have given me the courage to preform repairs I would have never thought I could accomplish. Replaced the fuel pump assembly while I had the tank down and blew the lines out and I’m able to fill up with no stops.

Thank you making such a detailed video. It was a huge help! I just finished changing my vapor canister, having already changed the purge valve and solenoid. It took me 10 minutes to gas it up last night. My biggest problem was getting the small blue connector off. Squeezing the blue tabs didn’t help so I cut the nipple off the canister with a Dremel Multimax. I have been getting a “tighten fuel cap” message daily so ordered a replacement.
did that make the "tighten fuel cap" message go away?

Had the same problem where I couldn't fuel my Yukon and was getting the “Tighten fuel cap error”. First I disconnected the EVAP canister and all the little carbon pellets fell out. So, I dropped the tank, cleared all the lines w compressed air and replaced the canister and canister vent solenoid. With all that done I can now fill up the Yukon perfectly. No more shut off issues. Thanks for the great advice!

Useful tips that helped a lot with my 05 Avalanche. Disengaged canister, used air compressor to get rid of build up. Also tried to clear as best possible the line from the engine compartment under the cover. Remounted canister (solenoid was replaced about a month ago). $30 gas ⛽️ and no shut off. Eventually I’ll get it replaced, just buying time...

Replaced charcoal canister, filter, and selenoid on top of engine. $80. The kicker was I didn’t want to drop the fuel tank to clean out evaporation lines. I disconnected and blew the f out of them as best I could. Then…. made a shop vac rig that blew air into my tank and checked all disconnects lines under vehicle and felt for air. Fixed my slow fuel issues. Contact me if you need help. I can walk you through.

The little blue clip from the purge line should be reinstalled on the line end. Makes it a lot easier to install the line on the canister.

I forgot to add that I placed the square filter end in the same spot as the original which was along side the inlet gas hose .

I have this issue with my 2007 Avalanche I even got the engine light on now since I kept putting it off as is more of pain in the ass than an actual performance issue. But now that the light is on I need to fix it.
There's also I valve on the top front of the motor it'll quit and set off the check engine light it's easy to change and about 30 bucks check it out first

Nice video however I feel like the charcoal pellets coming out is a design flaw that GM has never addressed. The real problem is that these pellets roll out over time and fill the air lines so they should be blown out during this process to.

Hayden Hamlin yes exactly, the air is not venting out of the gas tank as it fills. Watch for small charcoal particles, if you see those then you will need the canister and to clean out all of the lines,
Right now, my 2011 Ford F-250 6.2 liter gas truck stops after I fill the first ten gallons or so, and then it will stop almost every 0.2 gallons. Which obviously makes a 32 gallon fill up take a little while. I think this is my issue.

Yea it'll give you check engine light (tighten gas gap even tho it's tight the system is detecting a lack prly the purge valve) and in my experience (05 Tahoe) That's exactly what happened. Started off changing out the cheapest part 1st then took canister out put air line threw it figured it would either work or I'd mess it up and the replace it using a low psi and ran water threw it repeated till clean water came out. Luckily no charcoal was falling out but I blew out the lines just incase since I was down there anyway.. seen a spider web come out of a buddy's Silverado. But been working just fine since think cost was 30-40 bucks and good part of my day mainly cleaning the charcoal canister and making sure it was dried out.
A lot GM vehicles have this problem so it's gonna differ depending on climate (dusty dry) and just how bad it is. But If you can change oil or have a lil know how its relatively easy. And all of this is for emission which in my state they no longer check 🤦♂️so technically I could of bypassed the canister but that's a whole other can of worms. My advice just get up under your truck and take a look I got sick of stopping every 2-3 dollars getting gas and went home right after the gas station got on the concrete and a couple CZcams vids a lil gogle and next day she was good. I'am not a mechanic and can't say what you guys should or shouldn't do. just passing on my experience for entertainment. If I had the resources sure I probably would of changed all done in this video aka the right way lol. But I'm good with my fix after 7 months.. Good luck

nascarr11 I am not totally sure without lifting the vehicle up and looking closely, you might be able to on some models, the other option is cut the cable or clamp from the hoist and replace the hoist with a new one, now they are available aftermarket and way cheaper then the dealer, usually well under $100 for the house and cable assembly
I had the same issues I removed both items And used Compressed air in the canister Which after 10 mins of blowing and tapping had little dust/dirt The purge valve Which has a plastic snap on top i removed to find grit (one bigger than sand) and dirt in the filter which looked like a red scratch pad Which i washed out the whole system Along with pad And returned everything back I figure after almost 15 years of driving my Blazer On and off road it was time to do this while doing new fuel lines
I see you took apart the problem But rather than wash it out and order a $3 new filter you went with whole new system for around $150 ?
You cannot wash out the canister. Replace with a new one and you'll be good for another 10-15 years.

We had to drop the fuel tank to figure out where the clog was, The fact that small pieces of charcoal are spread out through the vent system was enough evidence to know the canister has failed and must be replaced, the canister cannot be cleaned and if the charcoal has spread through the system, well then it must be replaced. The job of the charcoal canister is to absorb fuel fumes so they do not vent to the atmosphere or inside or near your car as they are highly flammable. If you found any small particles that look like coal, then you need to replace that canister and you would most likely have a check engine light on.

Cansister filter You can open and wash out and replace the filter with the same filters for range hoods They bear the same microns allowing the air to pass while trapping non gas forms The paper filter in the canister is prone to fail with moisture and heat over time And a imbalance on the Ph level
Sometimes fully replacing the whole system is a good idea Other times As dad always use to say ..if it ain broke don't try to fix it

Try the gas cap. Get a new one if the gaskets look wormed out.

Leki Latu so if you found any small black carbon particles, then the canister came apart and you may have to blow out all of the lines, also a vent valve exists that may need to be replaced, check for any trouble codes as the vent valve will usually leave a code and turn in the check engine light

I have a 2007 GMC YUKON XL I had the same problem with unable to pump gas. Took 45min to only put $25 in.
I bought a new valve I bought the same one you show in the videos. I did change the solenord the part that is above the driver side valve cover. I did not change the canister and I'm still having the problem. What can I do?? Thanks again
Change the canister? I think, may be wrong, you can get charcoal bits in the line and that’ll create blockage. Blowout that vent line from the front

I fixed it, besides installing a new charcoal canister I had to drop the gas tank and blow out the lines and tank. A bunch of charcoal was inside both. If you do not do that it will screw up the fuel pump and tank and injectors. Not as simple as changing the gas cap. It it's the charcoal canister you need to blow out the charcoal.

icutwood 247 it can be unsafe and actually would be illegal and if you live in a state that does vehicle inspections, you would not pass, the purpose of the canister is to absorb fuel vapors, if you just vent the vapors outside the vehicle, well that could explode if ignited, the vapors must go somewhere and the charcoal canister is the safest and best place
Well canister weren't added till about 72 so what did they do before that.
HELP- Would this cause my oil to smell like fuel I checked my fuel injectors for leaks none are leaking I am getting one engine code for po449 the canister stuck on this going to drain my oil and see if I see gas right now oil cap just has strong sent of fuel
Yea it's running rich cause the valve is either stuck or not working so fumes are not being vented properly and are burning up..Fairly cheap form auto parts store and pretty easy. Po449 I believe is purge valve seolnoied. Ask that Google guy he knows everything and there videos about on CZcams as well. Goodluck (I am not a mechanic just passing on my own personal experience) I have fixed every issue I've had on my 05 Tahoe so some experience is required. If you can do regular maintenance chage oil, air filter etc you can fix it.

Check your coolant temp sensor sensor for the ECM

Why don't you just undo the vent is going to the canister and that would solve the problem that's what I did to my truck
Because why would I want to keep buying a part it's going to keep doing the same thing just trying to do the vent from the canister and let it vent to the atmosphere

I was wondering the same thing. I got a P0440 too. I feel inclined to fix the vent valve solenoid and hope that does it but at the same time I don't want to waste my time fixing crap for no reason

Problem is they put this crap under the vehicle if your in the dirt much it plugs it the older vehicles put them under the hood
Yeap. My 93 chevy c 1500 is under the hood. Never have issues and it passes smog with flying colors
Yeaup and that is why we sell the relocation kit so often, it keeps much more dirt and dust out when the filter is relocated high up and near the transmission
