The Pasig River: Reviving a Dead Water in the Philippines

  • The Pasig River in the Philippines was a clear, flowing body of water that served as the center of commerce in Spanish colonial Manila in the 1800s. Stretching 27 kilometers, it connects Laguna Lake to Manila Bay and was the major source of water and livelihood of the many communities along its banks. People washed clothes in the shallower waters and fisher folks' daily catch were always bountiful. The passenger boats that plied the river from the nearby province of Laguna to Manila and back served as the primary means of transportation. The Pasig river's demise was a slow process that began in the 1930s, when fish migration from Laguna Lake decreased, and people stopped bathing and washing activities. By the 1970s, the river stank and turned black. Water quality dropped.
In 1989, the Philippine government began working with international partners to rehabilitate the river. Improvements have been made in the condition of the Pasig River, but it still has along way to go. The Asian Development Bank is working to improve the river alongside government agencies, academics, non-government organizations, and communities and businesses.
The Asian Development Bank aims for an Asia and Pacific free from poverty. Approximately 1.4 billion people in the region are poor and unable to access essential goods, services, assets and opportunities to which every human is entitled. Get involved. Share this video. As of now Pasig river is already clean enough to sustain aquatic life and that is a great news for an environmental student like me, I would like to salute those Pasig warriors who never get tired of cleaning and reviving the river for more than a decade. And for us citizens we should avoid throwing our trashes anywhere other than trashcan and we should help clean our environment

I wonder if the use of trees and vegetation was used in restoring the waterway? I recently read a study that poplar trees with their roots treated with a probiotic (specific microbe) greatly reduced the concentration of trichloroethylene (tce) by breaking it down into harmless chloride.
Working with nature and using the solutions she provides.
      Tree roots can filter water.

They would rather settle in that place than live in a house with a toilet and clean running water. And then they blame everything on the government smh.

I lived in the Philippines for two years and witnessed so many people jus throwing trash on the ground and no one saying anything. Cat Daddy obviously u haven't lived in the Philippines. Every week the city trash men would come and collect the trash all across the city I lived in. Also they do have free health care. The problem is it sucks ass and the doctors don't get paid enough to care for so many people. All the stuff u said about contraceptives is close to true but the main problem is the girls feel ashamed to even ask for birth control cuz it goes against their catholic beliefs. Which IMO is the biggest problem with PI. Catholicism. Trust me I'm super grateful to be born an American. Especially after living over there. I understand they're less fortunate and I tried to help them but I gave up and left cuz it's useless. Common sense ain't so common over there. I'm not putting them down. I'm simply stating facts. There's a reason they'll never get ahead and change. They're not mentally capable of it. Plain and simple.

Problem are the undisciplined squatters who live along the waterways.
Most squatters wouldn't flock to NCR if only there were more economic opportunities in the provinces.
There would be more opporunities outside NCR if only elitists stopped turning Manila into their imperial grounds.
Many Filipinos wouldn't be undisciplined if they had proper education.
They would have proper education if only the government had enough money.
The government would have more money if people paid their taxes properly, and corruption is minimized as much as possible.
The people who complain about taxes should not complain about poor government services.
Corruption still exists because some Filipinos allow it to exist. They allow corruption since they selfishly benefit from it. If you see corruption, then report it to 8888. PNoy-esque apathy will solve nothing.

The river Thames that goes through London in England was almost a dead river but its been brought back so there is still hope. There are fish in the pasig river although Im not sure whether its safe to eat them
