The Dice Tower's original 'Top 10 Space Games' video was my first Dice Tower video ever. I watched it right after playing Star Realms for the first time. I googled something to the affect of "best space board games" and lo and behold the doors were opened to this amazing hobby. I binge watched every top 10 list that was out at the time and had a great list of games to start collecting. Thank you to everyone at the Dice Tower for facilitating my journey into the hobby.

My first Top 10 was one of their first ones, “Top Ten Games that Look Stupid but are Actually Fun”. I thought it was a video game list at first. When I realized there were more than 5 board games to talk about, I was fascinated, and eventually hooked. I still love watching their old videos for that same feeling, remembering how crazy it was to discover this hobby, all these bits of cardboard creating actual games to play. I love it
I often listen to these while at work with the video hidden behind other screens. I happened to start watching the video right when "A Lion Arg..." came up on the screen, and I had to try very hard not to bust a gut laughing. Excellent video editing, and excellent delivery!
Those Top10 are fantastic. And it's coming from a guy who normally hates Top lists, but yours give so much insight into the hobby that I forget they are Tops. I'm using those to build my small collection ;) Keep it up guys !

No Merchant of Venus? I'm glad Xia made it... but I am shocked that Merchant of Venus didn't make it into any list. It is better than a couple of the games listed. IMHO

My list: 1) Space Alert 2) Forbidden Stars 3) Pulsar 2849 4) Chimera Station 5) Merchant of Venus 6) Roll for the Galaxy (never played Race) 7) A Handful of Stars 8) Dark Moon 9) Terraforming Mars 10) TI3 (never played 4) Side note: I did play Eclipse, too, and liked it not bad, but less then TI3. Still I wouldn't agree it to be an Euro. Much less of an Euro than Blood Rage at least.
1. Alien Frontiers: Glad to see Sam redeem this game a bit from his Turkey list. And Zee is a bit wrong, there are not "lots" of expansions, there are 2, with lots of expansion packs, which add to the expansions or base game with some more cards... anyways this game is fantastic, and while it can lend to some long games, I have successfully played 6 players in less than 3 hours. My 5th favorite game of all time. 2. Mission: Red Planet: I got to beta test this game and quite like it, and Tom eluded you can play 6 players in a short time. I found it plays in 90 minutes with 6 people. Great game, and light enough for my family. My 9th favorite game. 3. Cosmic Encounter: this needs some serious more play. I have only played it twice but absolutely loved it! My 11th favorite game. 4. Relic: Talisman in space but with improved mechanics! My 17th favorite game. 5. Xia: Legends of a Drift System: I was fairly certain I would like this game, but surprised in how much I did. It was a bit long, and would prefer to play a shorter game rather than a full version of it, besides if you play a full version, it no longer is a sand box game as the whole universe is discovered. My 34th favorite game. 6. Terraforming Mars: A bit long for what it is, but still a very good game. My 42nd favorite game. 7. Exodus: Proxima Centauri: If this got more play, it might increase its rank, but I do enjoy it. My 60th favorite game. 8. Burke's Gambit: this is a pretty good social deduction game that gets played at my family game nights. Several family members like it. Simple and fun. My 77th favorite game. 9. Star Wars Rebellion: I beta tested this game and enjoyed it. But it wasn't fantastic for me. It is a solid game though. It is not on my top 100. 10. Battlestar Galactica: No longer on my top 100, and probably won't play it any more because it's way too long for what it is, but is fun nonetheless.
Man this was one of the funnier lists you guys have done in a while. I really need to get Core Worlds and Exodus: Proxima Centauri played. I've heard a lot of good things about it. My faves have to be: Race/Roll For the Galaxy Terraforming Mars Legendary Encounters: Alien Level 7 [Omega Protocol] Xenoshyft Dreadmire Among The Stars

Lots of great games in the lists, one the most complete episodes I remember. Still, I think that Sam, with whom I tend not to agree, owned the episode with his last 3 choices: BSG, Rebellion, TI4. Can't get better than that.
I haven't played Roll, but I HATE Race. My friend and I came in first and second the first time we ever played it against experienced players without having any idea what we were doing. Played it a few more times after that, disliked it more and more each time. The art is also godawful, and looks like it came out of a bad 90's video game.

I find it really hard to rank games in order, but my Top 10 Space games would be The Expanse, Terraforming Mars (there is space! There's a space elevator and a city on one of the Martian moons! Fight me for it!), Space Cadets, Xia, Eminent Domain, Forbidden Stars, X-Wing, Twilight Imperium 3 or 4, Star Trek Ascendancy, Rex (it's got space ships that go around the board and bombard the planet from orbit, it counts in my book :P).
Even before I watch this video, I guarantee TI4 is on this list... because it is both space themed and takes up the most space on the table!! .... See what I did there??..... I'll let myself out....

I think Sam’s point at 2:05 is a valid one, but technically, I think the word “terrestrial” specifically refers to Earth (from “terra”). If it took place on Mars for example, then it’s not terrestrial.

Dice Tower, This is a great list! Really enjoyed listening to you guys. Still wish your lists were standardized, so everyone was rating them the same way. This is such an important list. There are so many good space games, I would love a part 2 of this list that racked and stacked the first 20 to 25 space games. My top Space games only extends to what I’ve played / owned: 1. Empires of the Void II (Like eating space candy: Sweet to play and delicious to look at. I just don’t think any other space game compares to how this game looks. I love what Ryan did with the planets and how the cards make them come alive, I feel like I’m in my favorite Sci TV show, or even Mass Effect!) 2. Alien Artifacts (Great setting love the world created, short and fulfilling) 3. Star Wars: X-Wing (As much as I like the shields I hate them too. Can really drag out the game. I wish turns weren’t so slow, and the game didn’t have a tendency to drag on. So cool to fly the ships around though.) Dark Horse #1 - Xia: Legends of a Drift System (I went all in on the last Kickstarter, looking forward to this one and a little nervous too). Dark Horse #2 - Eclipse 2nd Edition (Really happy Kolossal is working this one. Hopeful for streamlining and components. I don’t have time for 4 hour + games, so I’m really betting this one will hit the sweet spot for me.
I picked up Star Trek: Fleet Captains in mint condition for $20 last year. It's a lot of fun, I'm kind of surprised all 3 guys don't have it in their top 10!
The criterion for "Space Game" should be like the one for "Nautical/Sailing Game". You can't just be in some foreign place that would have required sailing/space travel. The game itself has to feature the nautical/space part itself.
Surprised to not see X-Wing or Firefly on the list. And no love for Sidereal Confluence? It's new but it's been a big hit in every group I've played it with, and it seems like the kind of game Tom would really enjoy, freeform trading with asymmetric alien species.

The Dice Tower folks have made it clear that they don't play a lot of the classic hex & chit style games. So I'm not surprised that Space Empires or Talon didn't make anyone's list.
I wouldn't call it 'cut off' - it's a separate category of gaming, and often involves skills like assembling, painting, and basing miniatures, building terrain, etc, which not everyone enjoys.
Quite surprised and disapointed to not see High Frontier here. This is in my opinion the best space game both by its mechanics and its theme and how they are intertwined
Played my first TI4 game on the weekend. It's right up there for me with my top games now. I love Warriors Knights and TI4 shares some core ideas. Sadly I don't own either.

After playing Roll for the Galaxy twice I bought it and sold Race for the Galaxy and have never regretted it.

The Dice Tower folks have made it clear that they don't play a lot of the classic hex & chit style games. So I'm not surprised that Space Empires or Talon didn't make anyone's list.
Just a shame they cut off a whole segment of the gaming community, not to even mentions miniature games.
I wouldn't call it 'cut off' - it's a separate category of gaming, and often involves skills like assembling, painting, and basing miniatures, building terrain, etc, which not everyone enjoys.

Quite surprised and disapointed to not see High Frontier here. This is in my opinion the best space game both by its mechanics and its theme and how they are intertwined

Played my first TI4 game on the weekend. It's right up there for me with my top games now. I love Warriors Knights and TI4 shares some core ideas. Sadly I don't own either.
Don't do this at a different time of day - do all of them at this time of day! This one is hilarious viewing - informative too! Cosmic Encounter 9th though Tom? Really - surely number one!!!
