Let's Build a Medieval Army - Manor Lords Gameplay

- I got early access to Manor Lords and built my first Medieval Army. In this video I share my first impressions from a playthrough.
This begins with the character and coat of arms builder. We then enter our scenario to begin forging our new settlement. Surviving the first year in Manor Lords involves collecting basic supplies, establishing a foundation of homes, and starting to invest in more specialized infrastructure. By the time winter hits I strike out to squash the local bandits. However this conflict soon spirals into a full blown war with my feudal neighbor.

Invicta actually used to be a Total War channel before we switched to focus on documentaries. I still play in my free time and miss being able to share some of the fun. While the plan is still to focus on docuentaries, I figured you all would appreciate some history themed gameplay every once in a while. In this case, covering Manor Lords is very much warranted : )
W video and game
I love it. While I absolutley adore what this channel has become and the amazing artwork that goes into the documentaries, I do have to say that I kinda miss the Total War footage as a background for them sometimes. Probably more about nostalgia than anything else, but it certainly was a bit of my childhood 😅
Can you guys resurrect the old Time Commanders TV series yourselves, maybe as a Nebula game show or something? 😝
I miss the days when you used to play Subcommanders, those were that days cause it actually made the battles feel more historical
Today I learned!
You're making me feel old here 😅. I still remember the days when this was - exclusively - a gaming channel. Feels like ages ago. A nice throwback though 😉
haha those were certainly fun days! Loved the massive battles and sieges with Indypride and other creators. In the long long ago though I was doing Halo forge stuff : )
@@InvictaHistory I just had a look at the old uploads. I think my first video watched must have actually been somewhere between the Gladius unboxing and the announcement. I still distinctly remember the thumbnail of the '12h left' video popping up. Damn, that's over ten years!
Man it’s been that long!!!
@@floppiwaffle4200 Over 10 years, yeah. I can't think of many channels that have put out solid content for that long!
Crazy that one guy developed this (outsourcing some aspects) over 7 years or something.
This just shows how much, all of us would love to throw money at creative assembly if only they could give us something. It's crazy, there is a real market niche, such a demand and no supply. Manor lords proves it, do a good job and look.. you don't even need marketing, people are happy to do it for you.
I could imagine some big game mod in this game where you besiege a castle or some city. In essence, the siege did not last one attack as in TW, but several months or even years. During that time, a literal city of invaders could often be built around the castle. Just imagine if you started classically on the map. They began to acquire raw materials, gradually expanding across the map. Surround the city, cut off supplies. Build small fortifications. Skirmish. Build siege machines and dotho be in time pressure before the enemy army comes. Definitely a mod I'd like to play.
Mount and Blade may have what you're looking for. The vanilla games have pretty decent sieges but the modding can make them excellent.
It's in the roadmap for this game.
I enjoy all of Invicta videos
I do love the medievalness of how they march a large host into your lands without an open war declared, just out for a heavily armed stroll
I've watched a few youtubers play this game, and almost all of them struggle against the larger enemy forces in the beginning. They failed to go after the bandit camps earlier to make gold to hire mercs, and by the time they realize it, the enemy lord have already wiped all the bandits out. But give this game to someone enthusiastic about medieval history and warfare and you immediately dominate the map, lmao!
I honestly wasnt sure how ready this game would be but im so impressed with what i have seen so far and what is yet to come... there have been many let downs but this looks very, very good. Sure there may be slight bugs etc here and there and there may not be a huge ammount of content on release but its already far surpassed some others and i can only applaud the dev for his endless work.
Actually excited about a game for the first time in a long time!
When the modding community can do continent spanning campaigns in different historical eras, this mod might actually be the total war killer. I'm also curious how the finished product will handle the late game campaign when you're focusing on kingdom wide issues and large cities/royal armies etc. It's looking amazing so far.
If they can beef up that combat some more it’s the total war killer for sure from what I just saw in this video alone.
I mean these two franchises can coexist without one killing the other...😂
Creative Assembly is the true Total War killer 💀
Na completely disagree but that being said this is an incredible game and a must buy.
Invicta all up in here using his platform to get early access.
All the power to ya 😂
Definitely a perk of the platform : )
If Kingdom Deliverance were an RTS game, Manor Lords would be it!
So the combat will be utter trash? Lol

I first saw this game as a preorder on epic games while loading up assassin creed odyssey. Then at like 2am while feeding my newborn I saw legends of total war doing an 8 hour stream. Too long for me. Now I see your most more reasonable length video and I’m blown away.
Thank you for doing this. You’ve sealed my interest on this game. I’ll be doing more research on it and will be looking forward to its release.
I love you taking your time to take in the building scenes at street level, very immersive!
Happy to see some classic Invicta game footage, but respect also for everything you've built in terms of documentaries! I frequently recommend your channel to friends just entering the sphere of studies of historical warfare 💯
I hope to see more of Manor Lords from you! A documentary of life in the medieval period! Love this channel ever since Total War Rome 2!
The video we have all been waiting for
It's awesome to see a gaming video man! Thanks
this brings back times to the old days when you used to do total war. you know you were the reason i even played total war back then. you gotta start doing more of these videos man
People need to stop comparing this game to Total War. This feels like a modern-day Settlers game more than anything.
I wish The Settlers never lost their touch
Oh boy, Oakley HiDef back at it again with the games!
So hyped for this game since I first heard of it like 3 years ago, looks so good even for a early access game and has huge potential to grow in to an amazing game. As you said its a combination between Banish (one of my all time favourite games) and Total War. Also 1 guy developed this over 7 years or something... like wtf. Props to that guy. ps, good to see you show off games again (long time subscriber)
Any old timers here remember when Invicta used to do Rome Total War battles? Damn I feel it now
Over 10 years of solid content from this channel!
great review/tutorial!
thanks
a good throwback to the old days, great vid will be buying this game
Looks like a painting in motion. Can't wait to play.
Your channel ROCKS!
This game looks perfect for fans of this type of game. Can't wait to play it and see how it does... If the combat/strategy mix is right this will be a hit.... sorely needed in this genere
"The Enemy Is In Sight - Into Battle Men!! Follow The Snail!!" 🐌
...not too fast lads, I'm right behind you, slow and steady, it'll take me a few days to get there... 😁👍
LET'S GO!! Mordhau character model been used once again!
im also waiting for this game, thank you for an overview!
I cant wait to play this!
It would be so cool to eventually upgrade the village into a town and start bulding intricate fortifications to defend it in case of an attack
At first I dismissed it at "before you buy channel." Now you got me interested. Since i love medieval anime
Wouldn't mind seeing more gaming stuff like this.
Thanks for the video I've never played this game before
Great Video 👍🏻
9:14 That guy in the grey chainmail has got that BDE.
War is the gateway to prosperity!?
From the game play I've seen over the past few days, war and industry/trade for wealth accumulation.
Can't wait when we get a Magics and Dragons Mod for this.
From a realistic Medieval game to an indepth DnD City Management game. But rather than being the Adventurers receiving quests.
We'll be the ones giving out quests.
A hugely important part of medieval towns, villages, cities, forts and fortresses of all sizes was waste disposal!!! Where is the midden or waste pit building?! This could effect disease going down with adequate waste disposal (add a rat catcher or something) It could be built up to large drainage ditches or aqueducts eventually or a fire pit or something?!
God this game looks so amazing I just cannot wait for this
Hope they will develop it further ! Looks good
Looks really fun
I'm glad he took the time he needed instead of releasing this early and it be incomplete and buggy. I thought I was the only one looking forward to this city builder.
This game looks incredible.
So it similarities of a realistic Age of Empires, less Total War. So excited!
“We are living in modern times throughout the world and yet are dominated by medieval minds.”
― Eqbal Ahmad,
We must be the only 2 people in pak to be hyped for Manor lords
I never expected combat to get to this level by release. Another impressive feat for the developer.
Man Creative Assembly really hit the ball out of the park on this one..
This is not Creative Assembly, this is Slavic Magic.
@@guardiansoulblade2673 That.. was the joke :P
tbh i wish there was a tool system - i.e. your town needs tools to cut limber, shape the logs, plow the fields, etc. which would be expensive. if your tools break, you need new ones. maybe that would be a bit too complicated of a supply system. an in-depth blacksmithing system would be nice too, starting with just a single anvil and a moderate fire to make nails, etc, and having to upgrade the forge or whatever else. but i think a mining system would be required first
Thanks
Reminds me of old Invicta
I cannot wait for this game to be fully released, it looks so damn good
Do an series of this game! This sounds very interesting 🤔
🙏❤️ Love from Scotland ❤️🙏
It doesn't seem like it'd be difficult to do age of empires combat. Unit walks up to a building - swings a torch at it, and it does damage to the building. Same goes for fighting an enemy unit. The stats would just be numbers interacting with each other. Armies are at most in the hundreds like in age of empires, rather than thousands like in total war, so it seems... simple. No need for the kind of abstraction this game seems to deal in. Pathing is complicated in any RTS, but I think roads kind of solve a lot of that - armies usually travel on roads. They could slow down and stall up or get confused off road, which would be fine - because roads are everywhere and lead into other lands. Off road could be accounted for to some extent to allow ambushing and skirmishing, and that sort of thing. That way, small unit groupings would move better off road, but other units could go to sleep if they're left alone too long, so as to simplify the number of moving parts. I wouldn't call total war style battles "crunchy", but diverse. Crunchy is more like age of empires, where the way individual soldiers interact is a lot cleaner.
Diversity seems to be something that a total war style engine allows, though it doesn't necessarily pull off each individual thing well - it tends to glue something like a forest ambush into the UI and get it abstracted out for the sake of being part of the UI; rather than having the player more intuitively click at some trees with his selected soldier. Eg. The ambush would need to be next to a road along a specific axis, otherwise they can't do the ambush or they stall up or something total-war ish - much like trying to cross a bridge in shogun 2... in fact, the pathing was so bad in that game, that they couldn't possibly consider showing actual rice paddies in ancient japan, even though there would have been rice paddies everywhere... they needed to justify having wide open terrain (and then forests were just sight blockers, while hills would also slow a unit down). If it were intuitive though, the soldier could ambush from anywhere, so long as he's next to a tree, and say it were one tree per soldier you can hide (or he's in tall grass or something). Flanking in total war (or at least shogun 2) appeared to be a 1:1 thing, where if 1 soldier is fighting 2 on either side of him, then he's "flanked", and the unit at large gets the "flanks exposed" morale penalty. There's no reason why flanking can't just be 1:1 unit takes more damage if flanked or something. Morale could just be "defeat half the army in a select region" and then they flee, or if they're brave boys it could be "defeat 3/4 of the army within 100 meters (or whatever distance trace of area)". That would be much easier to code in, rather than morale requiring soldiers to cement themselves to a unit, and require the player to move the entire unit in order to tell individual soldiers to do anything. It's just a constant gripe I feel I have, the feeling that devs need to make units into these rigid companies. I get the inclusion of companies, but honestly, that shouldn't require the player to control the whole thing at once. It's like if you ordered a soldier to poop, you'd have to order the whole company to poop along with him.
Another benefit of single soldier selection is if you have multiple dudes, they can take on formations much like a company; and you can create ANY company you like that way, and it behaves in accordance with the soldiers in it, rather than adhering to some kind of company abstracted unit behavior. Age of Empires 2 did that, but perhaps that's complicated (for a game from 1999 which had good pathing algorithms, i guess). Terrain doesn't seem complicated in this game - the maps are wide, and not filled up by cities. There's streets to simplify pathing through cities. Also, how the hell does a single village with no distinction between peasants and serfs, conjure up enough money (taxes, whatever) to hire out an entire company?
I don't understand the insistence on total war style combat - the pathing of those games was very sophisticated. The engine was proprietary. It feels like a dumb executive decision for the sake of marketing to players who don't know any better (no offense to Invicta... you know your history, but game creation isn't magic and there's a few nuances that can't simply be assumed are possible or would make for a good game).
Cavalryunit is a must
This looks like it scratches that Dwarf Fortress / Settlers Vikings itch that I never knew I had
cool
"Waging war is the best way of prosperity"
Have you played any Paradox game? like eu4? Imperator, Ck2/3 or Hoi4? if yes which one do you play the most?
I don't know if it's just me thinking it, but isn't Manor Lords strongly similar to Imperium Civitas/Glory of the Roman Empire? It has the same blend of city builder and rts, with very similar mechanics. I don't know if I'm having a Mandela Effect about it but it feels strongly inspired by it
You should totally make this a playthrough! Some different content from this channel would be awsome (not that the content isnt already awsome)
Woa, gameplay? It's been a loong while
Huh. Didn't expect this channel to dabble in gaming too.
they have videos literally dedicated to warhammer fantasy and total war lol
Sort by oldest uploads ;). You'll be in for a fun time! With suprisingly good audio quality for the time I might add.
Miss your rome 2 videos!
Is there any way to play the combat in slow motion in the game, like in Medieval 2?
Lord InvictaHistory!
seen this a city simulator will not be enough.
Mmmoooaaaarrrr!!!!
I seen you can go into third person mode. Can you fight alongside you troops?
I am a fan of some total war games. People need to temper their expectations around this game. Enjoy it for what it is, not hate it for what it is not.
Looks and feels like Ostriv .
Seems like what stronghold could’ve ended up being as far as mixing city building with battle
I wonder if disbanding your mercenaries has a chance to turn them into bandits. Wasn’t that kind of a thing, if mercenaries couldn’t find work they would just resort to banditry sometimes?
Can soldierly skills be improved through training or veterancy?
It seems to be the case for your retinue, who look like they’ll be able to level up and earn new specializations in the future
Are you limited to 1 tower? Or can you build many?
I believe the castle stuff can get networked into a large complex but there are limits on proximity for some buildings I think
Can you play with combat disabled? (Other than bandits)
Not at this point, afaik
So beating up the other AI player = profit! That is good to know.
Also good to see your play style vs cityplanner plays (i think that is his name). War player vs city player
Imagine if someone was to create a mod, where you can form your kingdoms in different eras of time? Like in Ancient Rome, napoleonic wars, or the 1900s
Imagine a roman colony version of this
This most reminds me of a much better version of the old Sierra city builders (Pharaoh, which just got a remake; Greece; Rome; and Emperor, the China onr) but with much better combat (and graphics but that's less important).
This game looks amazing. it has way better potential than TW games
After total wars decline I put my hopes to this game.
I am hoping this game turns out as good as it looks.
Creative Assembly (the studio behind Total War) has been relying on their old battle algorithm and badly needing competition for a while now. I hope this can be it.
Ah... now I feel old, its been almost 10 years from Attila now.
It's still early access soo I think it'll gain nice depth. Dudes already done better than most AAAs 😂
Cannot wait for this game to come out, looks great!
Jo I remember when you played total war
RTS historicals are great.
This is 100000000% a game for me literally everything I love all in one game. I'm praying it comes out for Playstation why they chose Xbox over Playstation makes no sense stats don't lie and there's way more money to be made if they released it for Playstation not Xbox but whatever it is what it is. I'm just praying lol
W
ugh id kill for it
Question is if blood is a paid dlc?
My question is.... are ditches involved....
Do more please
So the game is relesed or is this a demo?
When is this supposed to even release?
Public early access is in like 2-3 weeks
Absolutely need to be able to kick the chickens. Essential for authenticity.
