      Miss Laurie thought " Carrie" was a parody for most of the movie- thus her over the top performance. When it came time for the scene where she gets pinned to the wall with knives etc, and she saw DePalma was so serious, she realized it wasn't a joke.( this info from Miss Laurie's autobio)

    I took issue with two of the answers for the second challenger's segment. They were related to the same fact. While the practice is outdated because of the advent of sports drinks, when I played HS sports from 1966-70, big jars of salt tablets, a tub of water and a ladle were standard fare. (Gatorade only began to be commercially marketed in 1969, it was still considered experimental and the taste of the early versions was nasty.)
    Mr. Hale's company, Morton Salt, made those salt tablets. So there should have been a yes answer to "Is it related to athletics?" and "Does it come in a pill or tablet?"

    Some years ago, I had a retired actor as a client. He had an uncredited role in "The Hustler". Some years he would have a W-2 reporting the residuals he earned for the role. It might be $1.78 one year, $3.15 another year; never much more than $5. Jackie Gleason had been deceased for many years, but Paul Newman was still alive and as of this writing Piper Laurie is still with us. It was such a popular movie, and if that's what a bit player in the movie (albeit one with a role that advanced the plot) could earn over 40 years later, I can only imagine how much Laurie and Newman were still receiving.

    • @igkoigko9950
      @igkoigko9950 Před 3 lety

      Surprises me that residuals (after the year the work was done) are W2 and not 1099, making it active not passive income, subject to employment taxes. Are you sure?

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 Před 3 lety +2

      @@igkoigko9950 First of all, whether the income is reported on a W-2 or a 1099-MISC (or starting in 2020, a 1099-NEC), it is still active income, not passive. Self-employment income is considered earned income, the same as wages and salaries are earned income.
      And yes, I'm sure. I did this actor's taxes for many years. I saw the W-2 forms for his residuals from "The Hustler". He wasn't self-employed when he made the movie and earned wages at that time. The residual income stream would be treated the same way.
      20th Century Fox must be residuals to thousands of actors each year. They aren't a fly by night outfit. I have to think that they know what they are doing, especially when it is consistent with everything else I know about tax law, having prepared income tax returns since the late 1980's and having passed the Taxation module for the Certified Financial Planning designation some years ago (when the test was still given in six different modules.

    • @igkoigko9950
      @igkoigko9950 Před 3 lety +2

      @@loissimmons6558 Thank Lois for the time and effort in the detailed response. Intuitively the thought of residuals being taxed as wage earned income offends me. Actors get as bad a deal as hedge fund or LBO partners get as good a deal , like the carried interest fiction, but that’s another story. Research taught me that residuals can be, as you wrote, W2 earned income or 1099 (NEC or misc) as I was expecting depending on contracts, who is paying (IP rights owner versus SAG or other collective) and other factors. TT has a good article pasted below. Thanks again and be well.
      Your W-2 form will report wages from services you performed, whereas residuals come from the sale or use of artistic endeavors you participated in.
      Typically, as an artist you receive wages to perform and are paid based on a flat fee or hourly rate. Then, if that performance is recorded and sold, you would get paid not for a service you are providing to the individual who purchased or rented the recorded performance, but as a passive owner of that work of art.
      Your residual income would not likely be reported on your W-2 form, but it may be reported on a form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.If it was reported on any one of these forms, you would look for that form entry in the Wages and Expenses section of TurboTax, by looking for the form number or description of the type of income you are reporting. You do need to report the residual income on your tax return.
      You need to report the amount listed on your form 1099 as your income, but may deduct expenses associated with it if it is reported on a form 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC in most instances.

    It's been a few episodes now that WML has opened with the words "live from New York". Some have conjectured that this was because so many episodes over the summer had been pre-recorded. But I also wonder if this was because the infrastructure was now in place that all the network and affiliated stations around the country could air the show live and didn't have to show it later in the week or the following Sunday.

      If we're talking about "annoying," we can start and end with Bennett. For a supposedly worldly guy, he has mispronounced places and names time and again during the run of this show. Tonight it was "Los Angullese." What a phony he was.

    • @AnnieKCleary

      @@Walterwhiterocks I do not believe Bennett was a phony, though he knew how to promote his writers and their books and be tactful about people's frailties. However, if you watch how he moves his mouth and listen to him throughout the entirety of the 17 years, I believe he perhaps had a speech impediment or hearing deficit because he pronounced the simplest vowels incorrectly all the time in common English words. It was not merely the NYC habit of saying Leonard Bernsteen, when composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein called himself the Germanic Bernstine pronunciation. It was a lot of truly odd things. And, back in the day, it was way more common for easterners to call L.A. by what now sounds to us like that odd name he used for it. Further, this was complicated by the fact that anyone who knew any Spanish would be confused because many American locales with Spanish names are not actually pronounced correctly in their common usage or they are nonsensical when translated or they are grammatically incorrectly in some way. He was an only child, whose financially well-heeled mother died when he was in elementary school, so he may not have had a lot of diction/speech correction at home if his father was busy being successful. And he went to public school near Columbia Univ. with the likes of Richard Rodgers, so maybe the gifted kids there were not often corrected by teachers. He was kind and loyal to all his friends. And even in the case of Dorothy, who owed him a book for which he'd given her a large advance in the early 1960s, he was never unkind in his follow-ups to get the way past deadline work of fiction published. He never got the book and lost all that money when she died or was murdered. He did not like her nasty gossip column, but he knew she was a person in trouble. But if you listen to him carefully you will hear how he either lisps after a fashion or is just not hearing sounds correctly. And I am not referring to the fact that no one on that show could hear anything correctly because the studio was a jerry-built room made into a makeshift studio with hideous acoustics and lots of noise from the other activities in rooms around it because it was not a properly equipped studio. To me he has the almost goofy, awkward behaviors of someone who had no siblings or mother to refine him a bit and added to that had the good fortune to make it big early on, so he did not have professional struggles from the ground level up to get where he got, thus did not have coworkers or bosses helping to form him. He's awkward, eccentric, odd, but not a phony.

      @Walterwhiterocks Před 4 lety +1

      @@philippapay4352 Thank you for the additional biographical information on Cerf. Some of your conjectures as to why he is what he is may have merit, but the fact remains that he tried to come off as a sophisticated, worldly, individual - which he clearly, IMO was not. In that sense he was a pompous, role-playing individual. If you object to the adjective "phony," I'll withdraw it, though reluctantly. Be well.

    • @philippapay4352
      @philippapay4352 Před 4 lety +1

      @@Walterwhiterocks You need not withdraw your chosen terminology. However, where you are wrong is that he was highly educated, extremely well-travelled (as evidenced by the descriptions on the show each week as to where he'd been or was going), he was extraordinarily well-read and often friends with people of exceptional talent, like Moss Hart, Eugene O'Neill, and other writers, composers, scientists, etc. He could hold his own on almost any topic. He had a sweet nature and was loyal to those in his realm. He was worldly and sophisticated. He knew more of most of the world than many of us ever will and was sophisticated enough, not unlike the poet-plowman Bobby Burns, to be welcome in the courts of kings and comfortable talking with contestants after the show and learning every little thing he could from them about their work and their hometown. He had a genuine thirst for knowledge and a love of the written word. He had all the sophisticated qualities with perhaps a bit of an unrefined edge in presentation of himself due to his odd language usage, habits. My father once said, when he was entertaining Japanese Naval officers in our home as part of his work as a Naval officer, that true sophistication was being comfortable with anyone anytime anywhere. That requires a lot of living and a lot of knowledge of people, places and things. Bennett had all of that, I believe, just in a rather odd package at times. He didn't have to try to come off as anything. Goodson and Todman chose him for the catbird seat on the panel because he was such a man of the world who knew everyone and was well respected. I return to you the kind words that you be well.

With all the lousy roles she was getting, she left for New York in 1954/55 to work on the stage and in live television and returned to films only when offered a great role in THE HUSTLER in 1961 for which she recived an Oscar Nomination; she then went on to further Oscar Nominations for CARRIE in the 70's and Children of a Lesser God in the mid 80's and had a grand career winning a Golden Globe for TWIN PEAKS (80's) and receiving an Emmy Award as well, never taking on any role that did not have a good, sound screenplay.
