Requested video had a hard time getting the great video captures I wanted but hopefully I explain the basics of Field layout and following and stuff good enough?!
Glad I found this video of yours. I bought a farm recently that’s been no till for as long as I can remember. I ripped it the first year I farmed it but I’m still seeing some soil stratification after pulling some samples. I’m thinking about breaking out dad’s old plow this fall. They used to do every acre with them in the 70s and 80s. I’m 30 years old and have never ran one
Stratification exists even after you plow it. Great buzzword. The plow can temporarily alleviate compaction,it cleans up a field nice. Can do ok for ditching.. But Stratification is another topic.
It was a dream to moldboard plow if there was any moisture to it. If it got dry it got hard. But then it blew in the Wind and washed with rainwater and Gully that hill.
You know you have created a big family, and I love the banter it’s great to see other farmers give their opinion and their views very interesting to someone who is not a farmer?
I really like moldboard plowing. We don't do it anymore. The most I get to do is at our local steam engine show. I use My 49 JD A with my Case Cenntennial plow. But One trick I did use when we plowed. That was with our 4640 and a 2500 6-18" plow. On the end of the run, just lift the 3 point. It lifts the plow out high enough and makes the( lift out and drop in) end up looking alot straighter. That's what I called it anyway. The other thing I did. When plowing the headlands in, When you come to the field driveway. Cheat the tail wheel so it is just cutting in about an inch or so. Then drop it when you pass depending on how deep you want the furrow on the outside edge.
The tilt of the plow is very importent you tilt to the right when strikingout a land then when your done with the backswath your wheel is in the ferl so you tilt back the left to level the plow the deadferl is what you have when your don plowing
Good question. I would bet money that soil with no commercial fertilizers or chemical with tillage would be more healthy than no till corn beans with chemicals and fertilizer.
David Holste I am going crazy over no-till and cover crops and strip-till! But sometimes when we got to fix a field up there's just nothing better to do it than a good ole mole board! I like it cuz on this field I can reshape the field a little bit create some drainage roll over a lot of Willow brush! And then never tell it again
Ha! Yep, love plowing, If the tail won't stay straight, meaning you drive straight but when you get to the other end and look back your furrow is zigzag. Take an old share and weld it to the landslide of the last bottom. It might help a little bit
For these old IH plows you measured the share at the bottom. They use the same share on several of their different plows. The 16 and 18 inch plows use the same Parts it just shank was turned a little bit
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 We farmed with an IH1486 and plowed with an IH720 18 inch 4 bottom, we put 20 inch points on, it seamed to pull better in heavy clay here in NE Wisconsin. In heavy clay the plow likes to what I call open up, take a bigger bite.
@@timr9358 well I'm glad somebody else experienced that. I like my old 710 plow, but I hate the fact that on the low flat ground it pulls wide and then Narrows up when I get to the top of the hill so you can drive arrows straight but you're dead Furrow is wavy. I always thought of welding a very long Landslide on that last furrow

Brings back memories, I plowed with a Case 930 with 5 bottoms, 20 inch. Didn’t have GPS used post or tree to aim for and make a straight furrow.
yes, the old post with a jug on it trick!
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 OLD COFFEE CAN..
That soil looks sandy loom, it will plow nice, that is what makes plowing fun, Enjoy! Nice video content!

spot on with the comment about the amish and the way they plow...im dealing with that now..
Very valuable for me at this point Mr Jon!!
How are you doing? Have to be excited for another year!
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Pretty good my friend, still watching and learning in the background😁 Ran across this one and loved it!!
Nice looking soil we like the plough for reseeding
I'm a garden tractor mold boarder. Thank you.
Ha! That would be fun.
I'm curious about the Amish farmers soil , Any noticeable difference compared to a big ag conventional farm good or bad?
Good question. I would bet money that soil with no commercial fertilizers or chemical with tillage would be more healthy than no till corn beans with chemicals and fertilizer.
You seem awful happy about plowing when I thought you were an advocate for no-till and cover crops!

The tree with the bucket trick see I’m learning a little bit at a time
Looking for info on setting up the IH 710 bottom plow and GO FIGURE here's a video from Jon Stevens 😂

Going very slow because the green tractor won't pull it faster lol
Ha! The 4640 doesn't drive forward it pulls the earth back!
Need a roll over or switch plow
That would have been cool. Never seen one up here
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 I Heard the switch plow was easier to pull.
Get reversible plow xD
You lost me when you said "landsLide"...
That's what we call the part that rides against the wall of the furrow to help keep the plow straight
It's a landSIDE, not a landsLide. A land slide is a type of natural disaster...@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
