- This is a very detailed explanation on how the gears of this automatic transmission converts the rotation of the input to those 6 speeds and reverse, using 3D animation.
I didn't explain how the real clutches works so if you are interested on that watch the video on this link: • How multiplate clutche...
Here you can download the model for 3D printing: www.thingiverse.com/thing:1094616

I was watching a f.ing bunch of videos to understand the automatic gearbox, and only yours is worked. Good job
Yeah, same happen to me. I watch so many videos and none was detailed enough to really understand how everything works. Was only after I finish the animation that I trully understood. Is nice to see that i helped. Cheers.
agreed
Awesome!!! Learned sooo much about them... thanks buddy...
I don't understand how the sun gear turns faster on P2 for gear 6 than it does for gear 5. Are you sure you got this right? Or should the configuration for gears 5 and 6 be switched?
@@dowskivisionmagicaloracle8593 maybe cuz the torque converter is locked?
Thanks for this explanation. I do think that it's not the planetary gearing that is difficult to understand but how hydraulic pressure is used to control the clutches and how this interacts with the planetary gear system. The structure of the clutch packs is also complex and worthy of a model.
This is one of the best most simplified animations on CZcams!! You deserve more views! Still very very challenging to understand as you have to imagine multiple things working all together in a 3D multi-layed synergy. Its fascinating.
:) thanks
one of the best explanation about Automatic Transmission! thanks!
You're welcome
I'll probably have to watch this two or three times before I get all of, but I know that I will get all of what I need to know from this video. Absolutely excellent use of animation.
This is by far one of if not the best explanation for understanding Automatic transmissions. Thank you!
bro , you just make way easier , this the best explanation ever
Definitely the best video on automatic transmissions online. The first that really helped me understand!
By far the best explanation I found regarding automatic transmission, but I think I need to watch a few more time to grasp it. Thanks
Unbelievably comprehensive video of all! You are such a genius!
No thenkuy
Well somebody put a lot of effort and I must say, it didn't go waste even a bit!.
Cheers.
Brillian explanation for the inner working of a transmition, what a tutorial, master teacher, many people who repair a transmition are barely part changers, only a few know how is working and how the ratios are obtained.
Compared to other video, this video made me understand better on how automatic transmission works
I love this. I have been trying to understand automatic transmissions for a while and this finally made it click.
Thank you, very well presented. Ever since I had to have my auto transmission rebuilt I've been trying to understand how it works and this has been very useful. Manual transmissions are quite easy for a layman like me to understand but autos are more complex to get my head around.
Excellent overview of the basic mechanics of an automatic transmission... Thanks
You make engineering look simple. Well done
This is bt far the best explanation of of the automatic transmission in youtube
Best animation and illustration seen till now for explaining automatic transmission. You know, it will be even better if you show the same animation while taking a quarter section to show the ring gear movement before showing each section alone. It will make it more understandable. Appreciate your great effort in this video. 👏
Thanks for this. You were much more clear than that other automatic transmission video that has over a million views. I'll need to watch it again a few times. I also have a few webpages open that explain the math of planetary gears.
+Soylant I am happy you find it helpful.
I agree that there are many videos explaining how automatic transmission works, but they all skip the part on how all those gears actually create all those ratios (power-flow).
I didn't go about the math of planetary gears because I didn't want to be too confusing, when already kinda is.
Good luck
Thank you, this was really helpful. I finally understood how automatic drive with planetary gearing works!
THANK YOU!
Extremely good animation and explanation. Well done. :)
best combination of visuals and explanation by far. going to rewatch a few videos showing a more realistic transmission now with a much better understanding and get the best of all worlds. cheers mate
I'm glad it could be useful for you :)
That really explains everything! Now I need to know how these machines engage each of the clutches *on its own*
a computer with sensors
***** i read an article at HowStuffWorks. Yes, there are electrical sensors and it's common now. Before they exist, they have a mechanical air-pressure detecting system to detect if the engine works so hard, and detects which clutch gear is hold. If the certain pressure is reached, a valve opens automatically to pump air to make the clutch work, just like how you manually use brakes.
Wow I learnt so much starting from this video!
+FrostMonolith internet is awesome :)
Engineering never gets old.
Absolutely best demo I have seen so far...
Wow. Thanks.
Thank you for making this video. It simply is not making helping people understand.
Wow this helped. Been wondering how it worked more or less. Have been watching videos that are too confusing. But this was great. Thanks
I understand more with animation like this than others, thank you so much
Superb illustration. Great work
better than what others have presented. thank you so much mate!!!! loved it
after like a dozen videos about automatic transmission, FINALY I GET IT! THANK YOU! you got a like and a new subscriber!
Awesome.. detail explanation with 3D drawing, very helpful. Thanks.
I don't understand how the sun gear turns faster on P2 for gear 6 than it does for gear 5. Are you sure you got this right? Or should the configuration for gears 5 and 6 be switched?
Superb explanation - well done !
My mind didn't comprehend all of what was going on there, but it does look good so subscribed, liked, and totally faved.
Very Well put together. The illustration was very educational, and Interesting. I enjoyed it, and I learned something I never knew before.
I am glad i could help.
Cheers
Well done. Thanks for producing.
this is the most helpful autogear tutorial goo job brother
Excellent demonstration!
The best explanation yet...got it! 👍
What kind of genius can come up with all of this? The Buick Roadmaster was the first ever car to have an automatic transmission right? That was in the '40s, really impressive.
Beautiful, Amazing, Genius, Analysis of mechanism..... 👍 no more words to describe your efforts.... Thank you.... 😜
Very nicely done, good video thanks man, good explanation and good animation.
I have to watch, then come back… watch again and again and again in order to understand transmissions
Yours is the only explanation that worked. Thanks Man!
I'm glad
Awesome explanation
Fantastic stuff mate! How are you not at the top of the youtube list!!?
I finally could understand the idea with ur clear explanation, thx a lot
I'm glad I could help
thanks for breaking it down.. i like having this knowledge
excellent demonstration & explanation, many many thanks.
I am glad it was useful.
wowsa!!!! i am drinking an few adult beverages this evening watching this in my shop and you BLEW my mind!!!! :)
Awesome video. I'd love to see one about a Ravigneaux type automatic transmission.
Very interesting!! The reverse, out of normal mind.
Sure it (A tLast!!!) is helpful Interlinkknight. (At my pace, I have to comprehend each "gear movement", day by day, but understanding them firmly, and in a deductive form. Thank You Very Much Interlinkknight.
You're welcome. I am glad I could help.
since im learning transmissions this helped allot thank you
+Knights Forge & Gold You're welcome
Modern automatic transmissions are a marvel of engineering. Glad they work so well so I don't have to work on them myself.
I rebuilt my first, a Ford 3 speed, in high school. Believe it or not, even the new ones aren't that difficult to build. It's a matter of putting it all back together in the same order as it went in with all parts inspected and troublesome or worn ones replaced, and making sure your clearances are set correctly.Troubleshooting one is more difficult because it takes a greater understanding. This video was a random recommendation and I feel the author did a great job showing the Allison 1000. Take in mind, there are many, many different automatics out there with differing parts and methods.
thank you ..it is amazing and helpful
Excellent video! Thank you.
thanks,It's very helpful!
Nice explanation sir, keep it up.
Bonjour de Paris !
As every une says, the best vidéo about Allison transmission ! Everything is now clearer !
I am so happy I could help. Thanks for your words.
@@interlinkknight ok I am doing a latex PDF calculating all the ratio ! I was assuming that sun Gear has a radius of r, planetary Gears have a radius of r/2, and of ce the ring Gear a radius of 2r, am I right ?
I don't understand the question
@@interlinkknight i am curious about the ratio of the various radius (Sun Gear, planetary Gear set, ring Gear) !in order to do the math ! PS if you are not aware, i will deducte from the ratio of the first Gear ! Thanks you again for your video
The gear ratios for my model are:
1st: 3.20
2nd: 1.86
3rd: 1.43
4th: 1
5th: 0.70
6th: 0.60
R: 4.41
There are websites that calculate ratios of gear sets. Just add the ratio of one set to the other, if you really want to do it.
By the way, to calculate ratios we use teeth amount, not diameter or size.
Very nicely done.
I must agree with Soylant - your explanation and animation present a genuine learning opportunity.
Brownie points earned for not claiming that this is an 'easy to understand' gearbox.
However, you did make the 'general concept' easy to understand, whilst at the same time providing the detail, that can be repeat watched.
In effect, you managed to kill two birds with one stone.
I could watch this one with my son (the benchmark)... whereas the 'learn engineering' vid was a complete fail, as witnessed by the comments (mine included).
I think I'll go back and edit my post to add a link to this vid and Thomas Schwenke 's vid (describing a simpler setup).
+PlayF1 Net Thanks for your words. Is nice knowing my effort is useful for other people.
perfect video to understand auto gear
Thanks
Amazing job!
Thank you very much for this wonderful animation. I'd have to watch it a few more times to grasp it better but its good that you explained each gear including N & P.
#OneMessageFoundation
I'm glad I could help
thanks. This is very nice work.
Does the system just lock up if you engage other ring gear combinations such as C2+C5, C3+C4, C4+C5, or triple or some combos?
Best explanation.
you have done good job
simply perfect
Really Best 3D Education...
Far more easy to understand among other utube videos
Thanks 🙂
The best explanation... Thanks...
You're welcome
amazing video!!
Good work
Very well done 👏
If there was a P4 instead, would the sun hear of P4 also be connected to the sun gear of P3-P2, and the result would give you an eight-speed transmission? If so, does this continue to scale by two’s?
Additionally, is P1 special only because you want to gain reverse? If reverse was not desired, would you be able to simplify the design?
Perfect explaination! Tq
This video is very helpful to understand mechanism
Please explain the work of piston in automatic transmission
There is already a great video explaining that. Link on the description.
very nice explanation bro....
Thanks
Excellent!! Thank you much.
Great video
thank you very much for this wonderful video .Do you have another ones about how the torque convertor works together with the transmission
+salem ogla Not really. But would be cool. Maybe someday, but for now I don't have plans of making a torque converter video. Cheers.
Great video!!!
धन्यवाद सर इस वीडियो के लिए इस वीडियो में आपने बहुत अच्छी तरीके से समझाया है
Niiiiiice video!
And that's the simple explanation, all that makes those planetary gears move or not is where it gets complicated.
Most difficult thing for me was wrapping my head around the valve body for the first time. : ) Everything else is gravy.
possibly add a clutch between sun p2 and sun p3 , then engage c2 and c5? and what about c3 and c4?
Good video, thank you !!
#interlinkknight i understand how the internals of an automated gearbox works, you've explained it perfectly, but how exactly does pressing the accelerator transform into shifting gears?
+adrian ionut On the bottom of the transmission there are a set of valves and solenoids that are controlled by a computer that "decide" what gear to put base on the speed of the car, speed of the engine and position of the pedal.
InterlinkKnight Ohh, I thought it was mechanically automatic... I was like what's so special about planetary gears that does that? Now I know that it's just a computer.
I don't understand how the sun gear turns faster on P2 for gear 6 than it does for gear 5. Are you sure you got this right? Or should the configuration for gears 5 and 6 be switched?
@@dowskivisionmagicaloracle8593 Let me try. In gear 5 and 6, the sun gears turn freely and the planetary gears drive the sun gear. For gear 5 and 6, the output to P3 is the sun gear, not the carrier, and that`s why things change a little. In both cases, the faster the sun gear turns, the faster the final output will be. Imagine that the planetary gears and ring gear are turning at the same speed (like a 4th gear). In this case, the sun gear will spin with the same velocity as the other 2 gears, right? Now imagine that the ring gear is a little bit slower than the planetary gears. In this case, the sun gear need to spin a little bit faster (in relation to the ring gear, since the planetary gears have the same velocity as before) and that`s what happens. Before, the planetary gears were not spinning, just turning. If the ring gets slower, but the planetary gears don`t, they have to start spinning. The bigger the difference in the speed between the ring gear and the planetary gears, the faster the planetary will spin and the faster the sun gear will rotate. In gear 5, since the P2 ring is also rotating in the same direction, the relative velocity between the ring and planetary gears is not that great. In gear 6, the ring is stationary, so the difference between the speeds are bigger...
Really strong Gboxs, used in loaders and trucks.
Make a video on how the hydraulic is being controlled to switch gears
Yeah, me to, i want to know...
@Mr Sunshines By that logic, this transmission would be called a gear. It isnt a gear. it's a system of gears working together, as is the hydraulic control - a system of valves working together. if you think it is simple, search up a "valve body".
@Mr. Sunshine whats is wrong with you
@Hay Day You are stupid as f**
+interlinkknight Hi, thanks for the video. Could you please tell me, is there a site where I can find the part drawings of Allison 1000 transmission? [I understand you have made changes for simplifying but I am looking for the actual models or dimensions to model them]
I don't know where you can find drawings of the actual transmission. What I used for reference was a video by weberauto where they show all the parts and how they assemble together.
okay. Thanks for the response. :)
Hi great video, do you have some pattern to calculate gears ratio in Allison 1000?
There's websites that have calculators for planetary gear sets
Can you make a video for the 3-speed double planetary set in say a Toyota 2000?
That would be cool but I have many projects I'm working on, so maybe in the future. I encourage you to make it yourself, maybe with Fusion 360. It's easy to use, free and you can do basically anything. Give it a try!
This explanation is similar to how Lesics also known as Learn Engineering discovered it.
Also this is not the number of planet gears per carrier in a real transmission, it actually uses 3 planet gears instead of 4 per carrier in a real transmission.
no difference in the functioning between 3 planet gears and 4 planet gears . but it's have to be mentioned
The problem with this and most other videos about automatic transmission is that they don't explain why this kind of planetary gear design is more suitible to be automated than the mechanisms of a traditional manual transmission.
That wasn't my objective with this video. Not even close
wow definitely I have to watch a number of times before I get it, but my question is once in neutral and at high speed when the vehicle is on, is it ok to go back to drive, or will the transmission get damaged?
As far I know it would not damage the transmission. I've done it and my transmission is fine
Best video. I actually understand it. The one from Learn Engineering got lots of views but is terrible.
