Here is a link to Henry Thomas's audition for Elliott. After it was over they KNEW that had their Elliott .. They stopped the auditions right on the stop and said he had the part!!! (Also, Drew Barrymore thought E.T. was real during the whole filming of the movie .. She even slept next to E.T. I was 11years old in 1982 when ET came out,and I rode my bike around the neighborhood with my friends, played D&D, wandered around in the woods unsupervised, snuck out at night, etc. ET is a great nostalgic slice of life movie from about childhood in the early 80s which just happens to feature an alien.
Tbh, ever since I saw this movie as a toddler and still to this day, I don't see Keys (The government guy with the jingling keys) as a villain at all. Even though he was pretty shady, especially with the jingling keys, it doesn't make him an evil, cruel human being that wants to get rid of E.T. In the movie, he was really calm, kind, and genuine towards Elliot and E.T. for three reasons: 1. He comforted and even held Elliott's hand while he was talking to him in the tent to calm him down, 2. He allowed Elliot to see E.T. one last time, and 3. He let E.T. go home without snitching. If Keys was the real villain, he would've never done any of those things. He would've showed absolutely no sympathy or remorse and did whatever he could to capture E.T. and Elliot and ruin their chemistry. And besides, you may have not noticed, but Keys almost acted like a father figure towards Elliot, when Elliot's real dad left him.
And also, the reason why the government agents looked and acted creepy when they invaded Elliott's home is because this movie is made for kids, NOT for adults. The movie is supposed to depict childhood innocence where, to a kid's perspective, all of the adults are evil and inhumane and are willing to destroy nature.
Spielberg originally wanted to use M&M’s but Mars said no. Reese’s Pieces were a relatively new product at the time. They gladly agreed to the product placement. The movie was such a hit sales of Reece’s Pieces went up something like 400%.
Wow, never knew that. Worst business decision Mars ever made. I mean, it’s an alien movie…… and it’s Mars. Their sales coulda been outta this world. But I like Reese’s Pieces better anyway.
In the novelization it actually is M&M‘s. Yes, those were the days when you had to read the novelization to relive the movie, because it took years until you could buy the VHS.

As for the Reese’s Pieces, I’d never heard of them over here in the UK, so always assumed that they were M&Ms in some weird American packaging! To this day, I always use M&Ms to lure aliens into my room.
This also reminds me of the story that California Raisins agreed to pay for a product placement in Back To The Future, under the belief that it would do for their brand what ET did for Reese’s Pieces. The product placement ended up being a blink-and-miss-it faded advert on the back of the bench that Red the vagrant is sleeping on! Suffice to say, California Raisins did not see a 400% sales increase.

12 year old me and my younger brother saw E.T. On the front row of a very crowded theater. Of course we sat there mesmerized the whole time.
Greatest musical score of all time!
While Star Wars features a lot more different themes due to the leitmotiv approach, I also think that E.T. is the better soundtrack and my standard example of an almost perfect one.
The last 15 minutes alone (not counting the credits) are one of the best things in cinema history. One of the reasons why it works so well here (apart from John Williams‘ composition) is the fact that the movie is actually cut to the music. During the recording session Williams missed a few of the cues by heartbeats, because there are so many of them. Steven Spielberg turned off the projection screen and told Williams to conduct the music as it should feel like, and then slightly recut the movie to make it fit the cues.
Fun fact: During the Halloween sequence when E.T. sees a kid dressed as Yoda that is actually Yoda‘s theme playing, which of course was also composed by John Williams.

Fun thing about the Halloween scene; because John Williams was obviously the composer both of this and Star Wars, when ET tries to go up to the Yoda kid, Yoda’s theme plays in the score for a brief moment. Also, Yoda’s inclusion was a little surprise from Spielberg for George Lucas, who returned the favor in The Phantom Menace, as a few of ET’s species can be seen in the senate chamber

This is Speilberg’s most personal movie. E.T. is based on an imaginary friend that he had as a child after his parents were divorced. The scenes were the father is mentioned and the fact that nobody can see or believes in E.T. except Elliot early in the film are examples of this.
I remember returning on a family trip from Seattle, Wa on the Greyhound bus when we drove by the movie theater sign listing currently showing films on it. It was super late at night but I loved staring out the window. It listed the trifecta of films showing at the time. E.T, The Empire Strikes Back, and Poltergeist. I yelled in excitement and woke my mother up who was sitting right next to me; I think a woke up a few adults near us too. I remember thinking I’ll just take a whipping gladly if she let’s me go to these movies somehow. On the same day too. I begged her to death and she agreed. I saw E.T and Empire on my second trip ever to see a movie 🎥. It was glorious!
Spielberg did several clever things when filming ET. Firstly, it was shot in chronological order; in doing so he was able to ensure the cast developed a real attachment to ET. Also, shot with the adults, were don’t from a child’s point of view; which is why you only see the adults from the waist down.
There’s a deleted scene with Harrison Ford, who plays Elliot’s headmaster; not teacher as some people in correctly think. Also, the blonde girl Elliot kisses is Erika Eleniak who went on to appear in Baywatch.
Also, a few years back Xinfinity produced a Christmas commercial with ET coming back to visit Elliot. It’s an absolute must watch & has some amazing Easter eggs in it; the photo Elliot’s mum takes on Halloween night can be seen stuck to the refrigerator door.
Although I never got to see it in the cinema on its original release, I did go to the see the 20th Anniversary re-release & it was amazing. I’ll never forget turning to my friend, who wasn’t a huge fan & seeing tears rolling down their face!! 😂😂😂
The ET character was designed by Carlo Rambaldi; who also helped bring HR Giger’s Alien to life & the Sandworms in David Lynch’s adaptation of Dune. There was multiple versions of ET, including a full scale puppet & also a version for when he walks. The walking version was brought to life by a person who’d been born without legs & who walked on their hands.
Oh & the caterpillar climbing frame is still at that playground!!!
The aliens are botanists, that's why there is that huge garden in their ship. They collect plants from different planets.
In the book, he speaks with the redwoods who say "Welcome back"
When this came out, my grandmother took me to see it four weekends in a row.

This movie and Goonies are such big inspirations for Stranger Things. Suburban kids on bikes having an adventure, though with more supernatural/horror elements added in.
I'm not sure what grade Elliot is supposed to be in but we dissected frogs in 6th grade. In our class they were already dead though.
👽👍 This is one of a handful of movies that all of us of a certain age will always associate with the summer of 1982. There were quite a few other special effects heavy films out at that time, including "Poltergeist," "Tron" and "The Thing." Drew Barrymore is one of a handful of actresses (i.e. Jodie Foster, Kirsten Dunst) that many of us older folks will always think of as little kids. I've mentioned it before, but it bears repeating: If you are fond of the unbeatable combination of Stephen Spielberg & John Williams, and you like movies like "The Fugitive" and "The Bourne Identity," where an innocent man is on the run while trying to prove his innocence, you've got to check out "Minority Report" (2002). You always make revisiting these films fun. 👏
I'm a damn 48 year old grown man and the ending to this movie never fails to make me happy cry my face off.
Must be just us 48 years old guys - ET reminds me of all the pets I've had (and that sadly passed) over the years
This movie made Reese’s pieces the number one candy at the time and it is still my favorite
I remember when this came out in theaters it BLEW up audiences to the point it could be days just to get a tickets because of sales and peoples repeat viewings.........E.T. had stupendous success at the box office, eventually raking in some $435 million (it was re-released in 1985 and a special 20th-anniversary edition was issued in 2002).
A few years ago, a commercial was made reuniting Henry Thomas (Elliott) and E.T. for Xfinity of all companies. It was made very well and very respectful of the source material. Definitely worth a watch - “A Holiday Reunion - Xfinity”. Steven Spielberg wasn’t directly involved with the commercial, but he gave his blessing for them to make it and said it’s as close to an actual sequel as he’ll allow (there is a book sequel called “The Book of the Green Planet”, where the climax of the E.T. ride is set).
I just love this movie so much! What an honest, kind ode to childhood. I wish there were more patient, show don’t tell movies out there.
This movie came about from several script ideas, mostly a sequel to Close Encounters, and Spielbergs own childhood as the only Jewish kid in the suburbs. According to reports at its debut at Cannes, the audience applauded through the last 15 minutes of the film. That's really saying something, because film festivals are a chore to get through.
Fun fact the same alien species that are "ETs" in this movie also make a cameo in StarWars episode 1, galactic Senate scene. That's why ET recognizes Yoda and theory is he might be Jedi or a Padawan
Not a Jedi but a species that uses the Force a different way. There were a number of species in SW that used the force innately that were different from the Jedi or the SIth.
The ETs were originally here to collect plants and fungus. That's why, at the beginning of the movie, the inside of the ship was filled with exotic and strange plants and mushrooms. Those are the specimens they had already collected from other planets.
ET was dying because his species has to stay together, or else they'll just waste away. That's why he came back from the brink of death, as well...because they were on their way and getting close. ET thought he was going to die, and that's why he let go of his bond with Elliott...or else Elliott would've died with him.
A sweet little detail I love but that's easily missed is at the end when ET tells Gerty to "Be good", it's a callback to him learning the letter "B", and Gerty saying "B! Good!" It's a neat play on words, but I also think it's ET's way of reminding her of that little moment they shared together.
My mom took me to see this in the theater when I was little, and it absolutely crushed me emotionally. It's still easily in my top 5 movies ever, and I still can't watch it without ugly crying.
Our local cinema used to play film music before the trailers etc started and once they played the song when e.t. leaves... well... I was in floods of tears. That song always hits me hard. It's beautiful.
Not typical of me but for some reason as an adult watching E.T ending gives me the feels, not when I was a kid though. They worked very hard to bring this movie to life and the nostalgia hits me like a brick to the head. This brings me back to the 80's and 90's with its style.

First movie I saw in the theater as a kid that actually made me cry. And To this day, I cannot watch this film without blubbering like a little baby at the end.
Now you can watch the Christmas Commercial released in 2019, where E.T. returns to meet Elliot, who is now grown up and with his own family.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. The story, performance's, music, images, direction, and cinematography was spectacular and phenomenal. It also gives a insightful and articulate representation of emotional resonance, faith, hope, humanity, social acceptance, love, loss, and friendship. It was decent. To the day I still play it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍😎💯👍
Great review of an awesome movie. Really did not care too much for this movie when it first came out, but it definitely grows on me the more I watch it throughout years. Also, the little girl that wears the blue sweater and red skirt that Elliott kisses during the "frog rescue" at school is Erika Eleniak - she appears in Steven Segal's movie "Under Siege" and plays Ellie Mae in "The Beverly Hillbillies". She also poses in the men's magazine "Penthouse", as does Drew Barrymore.

There is a video on CZcams of Henry Thomas auditioning for his role in front of Spielberg. It is really worth a watch to see just how good this kid was with his acting.
Fun fact: The scene wherein Elliot sets all the frogs free and then gets in trouble for it was originally supposed to cut to a scene with him visiting the school principal's office for punishment. The principal in this scene was played in a cameo appearance by your hunky crush Harrison Ford! But they edited the cameo out because they felt it would take the audience out of the movie if suddenly Indiana Jones himself showed up, even if just for a minute. I really wish this scene were available somewhere to watch, but alas, it has been lost to the editing room dustbin of history. But I do recall seeing a still from the scene somewhere a long time ago and yep... Harrison *did* film it. They just never saved it for future reference.

For one thing, I take great joy in seeing some of these classic films again but with the added excitement of watching them with someone fresh to them and who does not know what to expect. The actor who plays Elliott (Henry Thomas) is in an epic Western drama; Legends of the Fall (1994). I'm sure you'd love it.
Based on the 1979 novella of the same title, the film is about three brothers and their father living in the wilderness and plains of Montana in the early 20th century and how their lives are affected by nature, history, war, and love. The film's time frame spans nearly 50 years from the early 20th century; World War I, through the Prohibition era, and ending with a brief scene set in 1963. Bring hankies.
I watched this at The Albert Hall with live orchestra a few years back for my Mum's birthday.. it was great. I got a private box for me and my Mum (she loves this film) with a good view of the orchestra. I was studying composition at the time so I was making notes about the score because you can't really buy full John Williams scores unfortunately and seeing it visually helps me piece it together a bit better. The whole escape and chase sequence at the end followed by the last scene is some of his best stuff. He did Star Wars, Superman, Empire, Close Encounters, ET and Raiders all within the space of 4 years or something ridiculous. The Maestro. My Hero.
Want to see them make a movie with Drew and Henry as adults going to ET's planet.

My partner will always have tissues on stand-by, whenever we put the DVD on, knowing that she’ll find us holding onto each other, sobbing, 2hrs later!

*P.S. -* Just as an FYI, everyone always quotes *_E.T._* as saying "E T phone home," but if you listen carefully you’ll realise that, the _first_ time he says it, he actually says _"E T home phone!"_ I just always find that to be a neat li’l bit of trivia. 🤓
I would recommend „The Dark Crystal“ from the same year. Since you seem to like monsters portrayed by puppets, this movie with only puppets and of them monsters should fit your style. Since the puppets were created by the Jim Henson Company, the quality is top-notch.
Those two movies are linked for my, because the only commercial shown in front of one of them was the trailer for the other, but I‘m not sure in which order I have seen them.
Melissa Mathison, who wrote the screen play, was married to Harrison Ford back then, which is why there was a scene with him as the principal, but it was cut. You wouldn‘t have seen his face anyway, because the mother is the only adult who‘s face is shown until the government takes over the house.
It seems you were watching the latest version, because the original didn‘t have the scene of the garden in the spaceship. Later Steven Spielberg felt uncomfortable with the cops having guns in the end, so he had them digitally replaced with walkie-talkies. I guess he changed his mind, because the newest version went back to the guns.
Great reaction bring it back from good memories so long ago I saw the first time we tried to sequel for years, but can you get a good script together but a couple years ago the boy who played Elliott was doing commercial for a cable company or satellite company in Britain he asked Stephen Spielberg for permission
to do an ET commercial. He told him the idea he had Steven Spielberg love the idea ET, it’s a great commercial. I think I saw on CZcams. It’s called ET returns for Christmas. IElliott has a family of his own. Now he’s all grown up. They’re making snowman and snowball fights. I took the house and Christmas lights on the house start to flicker he sees ET snowman. He goes into the house with the kids. They watched some Christmas movies together And the kids video games and tablets work shows Elliott a picture of his family and he goes home. It’s so cute you gotta see it. There is a so-called knock off but it’s really good. It’s called Mac and me. It’s about an alien family comes to earth and they help little boy and wheelchair. He come to a new town has no friends and they help him Has a great ending. It’s very recent pieces eat skittles and Pepsi. It’s very cute. You should see it. Thanks for the fun until next time.

I feel like it has never been addressed that ET came up with the entire Phone Home plan, including how he was gonna make all the machinery work, while he was stumbling-over, blackout drunk and they are VERY lucky it panned out at all.
Alternative ending; The ship takes off, E.T. is greeted by several of his people, and he says with a menacing grin; "They won't be ready for our return." Screen fades to black, and the credits roll.

In the early 90's, my girlfriend and I hung out with a couple quite often, and were very close with them . The wife's name was Tina. One game night, she casually pulled out a scrapbook full of stage passes, a script, and tons of polaroid pics of her on set with Steven Spielberg, young Drew Barrymore, and even a visiting Harrison Ford. A number of actors played the part, but she had played the drunken E.T. who had fallen over in the kitchen. Her name, Tina Palmer, is in the end credits...

IMO, the 3 greatest Director-->Composer pairings in modern cinema are Spielberg-->Williams, Zemeckis-->Silvestri & Nolan-->Zimmer.
I read an interview with Spielberg where he said he considers this the movie he would leave for future generations if he had to choose only one. I agree. It touches on everything important in life.

Another fun fact about John Williams and E.T. is that Steven had Williams compose the music for the last reel (bike scene) and then Steven cut the film to the music; it is usually the composer who fits the music to the cut.

I remember at the time as a kid going ET and BMX crazy!!. The local cinema had a model of ET mounted outside the cinema, it made the local newspaper when ET's head was nicked.... Happy days!!!
OK, Jen, you are now old enough to know that ET is a Star Wars creature, he knows and uses the Force and he recognizes Yoda as a creature of his home (and also some ETs appear on the Republic Parliament on Star Wars I).
On the other side, the Stranger Things screenwriters found in this movie the inspiration to create their visual setting (clothes, bikes, gadgets,...)
They filmed this from beginning to end as we watch it. Most movies are filmed breaking scenes up ,editing, and put the scenes together. They also wanted it to be seen as a children's point of view. That's why we don't see what the adults look like from the waist up till the end.
Not sure if someone mentioned it or if you realized that Henry Thomas (Elliott) plays Hugh Crain (younger version) in The Haunting of Hill House...

I don't know how I missed you showing this. Maybe I was passed out or something. Okay maybe not passed out as much as unconscious. Been accused of not be conscious before. The M&M people totally blew this. It was HUGE for Hershey. We never performed on live animals. Ours came pickled. It would have been wrong to have us killing creatures in class. I worked with an El-ee-utt in Korea. Worked with a guy who was affected by the "Owww!" line as well. This movie gave us so much including the amblin entertainment logo. You know Elliott/ET/bike/moon. I think it was rude of us to just keep calling our off world friend. Off Worlder. There has to be a real name be we just chose Hey You. Sounds like the way I work. Pretty sure I heard that the "penis breath" line was supposed to be "peanut breath" but the actor said the wrong word. They left it in, which is why the mother laughs at it. Maybe. Who knows with these "fun facts" anymore?

My dad took me to see this in 82 but it was sold out. So I didn't see it till 1989 on VHS.
ET's species is part of the Star wars universe. They are even shown in the Galactic Senate in star wars episode 1
On the seat Drew always talked to et like he was alive so Steven had the ones to do et always had him move with Drew Barrymore on seat to make her happy

@@jenmurrayxo The only change I recall was that they replaced the guns the agents were holding with walkie-talkies.
As well as replacing the guns with walkie-talkies, the 20th anniversary special edition also added some extra scenes, and ET was replaced with a CG version in many shots, in order to give him more expression and freer movement. A lot of other FX shots were replaced too, and while the overall result wasn’t technically that bad, it just felt jarring and rather unnecessary.
I think that Mr Spielberg was influenced by what George Lucas had done with the Star Wars 20th anniversary special editions, and as ET actually made more money than Star Wars on its original release, there was clearly the thought that there’d be a big market for an updated version. Turned out to be wrong, as the special edition didn’t make much money at the box office, and I think in later years Spielberg has come to see it as a big mix-step. The original version is certainly the only one that gets rereleased whenever there’s a new format! There’s a hilarious South Park episode that came out at the time, mocking the whole idea of updating old films, and Lucas & Spielberg don’t come out of it too well!

You have to check out Poltergeist which was filmed literally a couple of months before E.T (both Spielberg) and were released a week apart from each other.

Ok, Potato salad is ONLY gross when done by U.S. Markets. Homemade is beyond delicious, you just can't use the same things they use. My parents make some mean Potato salads. But yes, if you buy it, it will taste like sweet garbage. If you make it, it will be great, just follow a different recipe

Ah, ET, what a film. It works on so many levels, being a buddy movie, a sci-fi movie, a study on dealing with loss, divorce, and adult responsibilities… and it has one of the best child casts ever put on film! I knew Jen would really enjoy it.
I’ve always loved how Spielberg shot it so that we never see an adult’s face (apart from the mom, who is really an honourable kid in this world, having regressed a little following her divorce), until ET gets found and the adult world intervenes with a vengeance. It really creates a wonderful feeling of the kids against the world… but just the we finally come face to face with Keys, whom we’ve been led to believe is the villain, and it turns out that he’s actually sympathetic and a grown-up version of Elliot! That’s a nice turn, and so is making it clear that, as traumatic as the treatment scenes are, the medical guys are genuinely trying to save ET’s life.
The adult world is proven to not be quite a dark as thought (although the cops and agents still chose the kids with guns), and in the end, Elliot sets aside his selfish desires and stays behind while ET leaves, thus proving that he’s taken a step towards adulthood. In this way, he’s the inverse of Roy Neary in Close Encounters, who chooses to abandon his responsibilities and leave with the aliens. It’s an interesting parallel, and I’ve often wondered if it was deliberate on Spielberg’s part. He certainly said in later years that Roy’s decision to leave is one thing that really dates him as a film maker and as a man - young Spielberg would definitely have gone with the aliens, but once he became a father he realised that he could never leave his kids like that.
Whatever the case, at least Mr Spielberg seems to have decided that the changes he made for the 20th anniversary release were not such good ideas after all!
