  • It is on the famous "French Riviera" that we meet for this new video. 259km long, the Côte d'Azur line connects Marseille to Ventimiglia in Italy, and is famous for the beauty of its landscapes, skirting the Mediterranean Sea for a large part. In a previous video we have discovered the line between Nice and Marseille before continuing to Paris via the LGV (link: • ★ 4K 🇫🇷 Nice-Ville - ... .
    Today, we're looking at the line leading from Italy to Nice, departing from Ventimiglia, crossing Monaco, before passing through Nice heading to Grasse on a branch separating from the main line after Cannes. So we'll be journeying through 3 countries in this video.
    If you aren't familiar with Monaco, it's the second smallest country in the world, behind Vatican City. The train line was formally above ground and was moved underground to free up space in the city. As we enter the tunnel, you can see the route the railway used to take to the left.
    We hope you enjoyed the video. Don't hesitate to leave a comment.

    Beautiful train ride! Wonder how they dug some of those long tunnels back in the 1870's... what surprises me is how eerily quiet a big town like Nice looks, at least from the tracks.

    La ligne Cannes-Grasse a été fondée comme le reste du réseau Sud-Est par le PLM. Elle lui a surtout servi, avant-guerre, à expérimenter des locomotives électriques sur différents courants alternatifs de type monophasé, déjà. Il s'agissait de véritables dinosaures du rail avec des configurations d'essieux loufoques comme sur le PO-Midi. Elle a ensuite fermé après la guerre, mais la mobilisation pendant des décennies par la population locale a permis un petit service sur Cannes-Ranguin en traction diesel, avec des X 4500, assez irrégulier et constamment en butte à l'hostilité des politiciens locaux. Finalement, ces décennies de combat ont mené à une écrasante victoire avec la réouverture de la ligne Cannes-Grasse en 2005. Rares sont les réouvertures de ligne en France, celle-ci est à saluer.

    Super interesting video! The line referred to at the former junction visible at 6:24 minutes did not come from Limone Piemonte (border railway station) but from the infamous "Parco Roja", which never came into operation and cost the tax payer billions of Italian Lire. The aforementioned 1500 V DC electrified line intersected the non-electrified line (pre-war it was electrified with the three-phase system) from Ventimiglia to Limone Piemonte.

    It's amazing where a train starts off at 25KV then 1,500V= than back to 25KV, then back to 1,500V= like from Nice to Paris TVG, even on this video starting off at 1,500V= then switches to 15KV with out stopping to change the pantograph

    • @rodneymcgovern5984
      @rodneymcgovern5984 Před 9 měsíci

      You're forgetting, it's the train's electrical equipment that copes with the changes of current and voltage: a pantograph merely collects the current of whatever sort, it's all the same to a metal frame that is fixed to a train's roof!

    • @jonathonshanecrawford1840
      @jonathonshanecrawford1840 Před 9 měsíci

      @@rodneymcgovern5984 I know how electric trains work! I have seen some that have two pantographs, these were early trains, not locomotives! Also please re read my comment and there's words *"amazing how"* on other words Its amazing how a train can use only one pantograph, for two different voltages _(not at the same time)_
      The equipment if it is designed for duel voltage i.e. 1,500V= and 25KV~thus only one pantograph can be used , other wise two pantographs must be used for the different voltages, e.g. one converts the 25KV~ down to 1,500V= while the other pantograph is just for 1,500V= only.
      I know with the TGV the voltage conversion is automatic!
      Oh by the way I am not stupid! In can any one thing that!

    May I ask you about the neutral section outside the Ventimiglia Tunnel, is it 1.5kv DC - 25kv AC or it is 1.5kv DC - 3kv DC ?. As I know, Italy has a 3000v DC power line. On the other hand, judging by the catenary poles, it seems to be 25000v AC line voltage.

    The Ventimiglia railway station is electrified at 1500 V direct current also for Italian trains which, therefore, operate at quarter power. Only a few modern electric railcars equipped with special devices can reach the border railway station. In my day, with the old locomotives (E636 etc.) fitted with a rheostat there were no problems operating under the catenary at 1500 V. However in winter, if half an hour was normally enough to warm up a train, in Ventimiglia they needed two hours.

      Why Ventimiglia station is electrified at such a voltage?

    • @Luigi-uj5ml
      @Luigi-uj5ml Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@corner63 When the SNCF electrified the Marseille - Ventimiglia line with the 25 kV 50 Hz system, it was decided to lower the voltage of the direct current from 3000 V to 1500 V so that both the SNCF dual voltage locomotives (1.5 kV direct current / 25 kV alternating current at 50 Hz) and the FS locomotives could operate there without too many problems. Until the 1960s, up to Ventimiglia station there was three-phase and from there on there was steam (141R) and diesel. The same decision was also taken at Modane when the line to Chambéry was re-electrified by switching from lateral third rail to catenary. When the three-phase arrived from Italy and towards Chambéry there was 1500 V via the third rail, there were no problems whatsoever

    Thanks for another great trip to an area I would never get to see otherwise. One suggestion, in the lower right corner where you show Vmax, show the speed as 'km/h' instead of 'Km/h'. In the metric system, an upper case 'K' stand for Kelvin as a unit of temperature, so you are showing 'kelvinmeters per hour. The unit for 1000 is uses a lower case 'k', so kilometers should be shown as 'km'.

      Yes, I agree. I'm shocked by the shabbyness of everything. The best cab rides are in Switzerland. Everything is pristine there.

    I love your videos 💖 In this one, I have noticed that the ads pop up every 5-7 minutes… 🤔
    They just mess up with the experience 🙂

      @@lorirocks777 thanks for the reply 🌻 I don’t mind them usually, and I every time I see them, I imagine a couple of coins droppin in the creator of the channel’s pocket 🙂 But this time, it was just too much to enjoy otherwise one of my favorite channels here 🌻

      @@dusanleonovski8963 Ok, well thanks for your input :) I know they can be annoying. I recently started using a browser called "Brave" that automatically blocks them - mainly because I don't like the fact that my kids have to sit through ads. It does a great job getting rid of ads all over the internet.
