I married Doug McClure in SHENANDOAH & slept with Chuck Heston in WAR LORD! With Rosemary Forsyth!

  • Actress Rosemary Forsyth was surrounded by handsome leading men while making SHENANDOAH. The classic was her first feature film. She had numerous scenes with legendary Oscar winner and WWII hero, James Stewart, who played her father in the film. Her character marries Doug McClure and the actress still gets chills recalling the emotional scene that takes place during their wedding. SHENANDOAH was one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
Rosemary’s very next film cast her opposite another Oscar winner. Her leading man was Charlton Heston, whose title character, THE WAR LORD, claims his right to bed the newly married lass on her wedding night.
Both films showcased the Canadian-born actresses’ stunning beauty and elegance in two very different characterizations. Rosemary won a Golden Globe nomination as “Most Promising Newcomer” for SHENANDOAH.
This interview was conducted at the Autry Museum, Nov 15, 2016, and was originally shown as two short AWOW episodes. We are now producing longer episodes so I've gone back into our archives to lengthen the older shows, combining them and adding new footage.

I met Doug McClure when I was mid 20s walking through a L.Vegas casino; Mr. McClure was at a blackjack table. He saw me and just smiled & nodded at me & looked back at his cards; made me feel like a million bucks. All those great gentlemen from that era are gone now. Loved The War Lord - know it by heart; Shenandoah was also excellent. Rosemary was a huge beauty many of us young ladies wanted to be. Great interview; thank you, Rob.

1 of my all time favorite films "Shenandoah" and song....what a tremendous cast!....affects all the senses...saw it as a young boy and for years could never forget the various character plot twists and how they died like Patrick Wayne, Kat Ross, Jimmy Best and Glen Corbett...and when that church door opens and "Boy" walks in....WOW!....thanks Rob, your the best brother...👍💥🇺🇲💥

Shenandoah was a very moving film. Still is. And The Warlord is one of my favorite Heston films. The level of detail paid to Heston’s wardrobe was very accurate to the period of William the Conqueror. Great interview. I have often wondered what she thought of those films. Thank you, Rob.

My parents took us to Universal Studios in 1964; we saw Spot blow smoke when the Munsters' staircase raised up, Leslie Caron's gorgeous blood red sequined gown in her dressing room while filming Father Goose with Cary Grant, and I remember thinking HOW SMALL Charlton Heston's castle keep was in The War Lord - AMAZING! What superb movies we had back then!

"Nice!" I recently watched "Texas Across the River," which she was also in. It's a really funny film (plus the Blu-Ray is currently half the price of the DVD!). I think I've seen at least part of this interview before, but all I remember of it is that I remember seeing it. So, it's the same as new. I was 6 years old when my entire family went to downtown Los Angeles to a walk-in theater to see this picture. I fell asleep about a quarter way into it and woke up about the last 15 minutes of it. I had to wait for it to make it on TV for me to see the entire picture and years later to understand what it was about and all the stars in it. Rosemary Forsyth is still so beautiful even today and sharing all those memories. Thank you for sharing this and bringing back good family memories for me.

Fantastic Interview with a cast member Rosemary Forsyth of Shenandoah talking about how she met her future husband Doug McClure and Jimmy Stewart who gave one of his best performance in that role. Warlord with Charlton Heston was a complete change of pace yet these two films are oddly appropriate for the 4th or Independence day as rebellion is an underlying message in both and the costs of rebellion. During these perilous times we all need occasional reminders. Thanks Rob.

Well, a really interesting episode. I remembered some of this from the previous episodes but that didn't diminish my enjoyment at all. I learned that Rosemary was born in Canada, which something that I never knew about till I read it in the description. She grew up in the US so her ties to Canada were limited and in reality irrelevant. Shenandoah has always stood out as a unique civil war film. Her performance belies her relative inexperience. The relationship between her character and Doug McClure's were in many ways the visual and emotional embodiment of the basic dichotomy of the situation that the film highlighted.

"Classic" is a term too often misapplied and or its meaning misappropriated as referenced to films and literature of recent vintage, when in order to *be* a classic, by definition, the thing must be of time tested worth and have retained a following and secured an appreciation long after it was made. And so could never be legitimately declared as such any time soon after it was completed and most certainly not in advance of it as Rosemary says "Shenandoah" was represented to her.
Heck, at that stage it couldn't even be declared good, ner passable, nor even fair to middlin' fer goshsake (Much in the manner of today where everything said to be "Awesome!" isn't really, nor in most cases even remotely close to it).
So, "Shenandoah" was definitely not a classic then. But some thirty years later after having passed all the necessary criteria, for sure is now.
Lovely, gracious lady. Very nice and most enjoyable interview.

A "classic" western is from when the production companies owned all their own props rather than contract for them, the notable characteristic being movies set in 1861 using rifles not invented until 1892.
