Testing 3 Fast-Set Resins with Alcohol Ink Tumblers

  • I recently acquired some fast-set resin from Artistry Epoxy, and when I thought about it, I realized I also have fast-set resin from ‪@mr.nolasglitter8094‬ and ‪@KSRESIN‬. So then I thought, "I wonder how doing an alcohol ink swirl on fast-set epoxy resin would work?" And here we are: 3 tumblers, 9 gorgeous ‪@woodesgoodies2437‬ alcohol inks, some Marabu sinker white, and 3 different fast-set resins. What could possibly go wrong??? The gnome gods laughed and laughed and laughed.

    I love Swirls! Mostly swirls of color, but really any swirls at all - I think they add a beauty and grace to everything. So after I started making soap a few years ago, and needing some sort of biz name that didn't sound like everyone else's version of suds-r-us, I decided on Luxinda Swirl. Luxinda is a twist on my real name, and I quickly started putting swirls of color in all of my handmade soaps.
    Now I'm branching out a bit, and I want to keep adding swirls to everything I do!

      Thank you!!! The MNG speed-dry is *really* thick compared with the other two. I felt like I had to use a lot more force to smear it on. So while I liked the swirls on the blue MNG cup better, I found the other 2 resins easier to use. But honestly, all three were surprisingly well behaved 😁

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Před 2 lety

      Thanks!! I know, it's almost nuts how everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. But so far, the main difference I've found is the viscosity. Honestly, the thickness of MNG's speed-dry is almost daunting, but it does set up fast and has a lovely shine to it. If you can get sample sizes, it's a great way to test them out and find which you like best.

      Thanks!! I love the metal-underneath style - I think it gives the colors more of a jewel-tone look. “Go commando” LOL! I’ll have to remember that description for this 😁
      I clean these cups with alcohol but don’t sand because I don’t want the scuff marks to show. I have seen one tumbler maker use an ultra-super-fine sandpaper grit to keep any marks from showing, so that’s another option.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, I've had that particular set of Liquidy Split for almost a year now, so it has aged a bit, but when I mix it and use it (even on a white background tumbler), the yellow doesn't come through (I used it for the white glitter base layer of the Anthony Crammen cup I made at Christmas time czcams.com/video/ZnitV1fLh28/video.html). It will happen with almost all resin over time unfortunately, and I didn't buy the Ultra UV version of the Liquidy Split, which probably stays clear much longer.

    • @kristajones815

      @@Luxinda ahhhh, it's probably the age then. I know that most resins have one side that is yellow-ish and the other is blue tinted. Which one was self leveling and less bubbles do you think?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Před 2 lety

      I believe all three are self-leveling. As for bubbles, I noticed fewer bubbles with Artistry Epoxy’s resin when I mixed it. But since alcohol pops bubbles, I didn’t really worry about bubble issues with all the alcohol ink used (plus heat). Bubblage comparisons of the three would have to be a different video. Thank you for watching!

  • @kingdomthingstnt
    @kingdomthingstnt Před 2 lety +1

    This might be a silly question but did u add the inks immediately after applying the epoxy ? I'm having a bit of an issue with ink spots taking long to dry and I saw someone say the epoxy should be left for like an hour b4 applying ink .

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Před 2 lety +1

      Really? Wow, I’ve never heard that even when using regular resin. But to answer your question, yes, I applied each different fast set resin, then dropped on the alcohol inks right away. If the spots are taking longer to dry, it may be that too much alcohol ink has been dropped on. That can happen sometimes even with regular resin.

    • @kingdomthingstnt
      @kingdomthingstnt Před 2 lety

      @@Luxinda hi sis ...thanks so much for taking time to respond .
      Yes you are on to something there , with saying to much ink may have dropped in the spot . I believe it's that and the fact that the resin coat was thin . So last night I reapplied a layer . I thi k that shud do the trick and later on today I'll do a decal as long as it's not tacky still . I'll put a final coat after the decal .

Only thing I'm thinking is maybe I stir too long? Only a few min until it's clear but I'm about to trash it. • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that! However, I do know that a lot of folks have different favorites, so I wouldn't give up on the idea of fast set because of this. I know Artistry Epoxy has 2 different fast set resins, a 1:1 and a 2:1, and they sell each in sample sizes so you can test them out without shelling out a bunch of $$ So far, I've tested only the 1:1 and it worked fine, but I have no idea if the 2:1 is any better. The difference is apparently in the viscosity. artistryepoxy.com/shop/epoxy-resin/epoxy-samples/
