    That would work well for sand. I have a slightly different style for harder ground. Next time I make one, I will video it.

      Calaveras 32Spcl for freshwater, and not at the beach i use heavy wire rod holders or my basket, which is up coming.

    At 2:07...push down really hard on ROUND bottle till it becomes SQUARE! Should just use a SQUARE bottle to start with. Nice video

    Just cut a nudge in it where the reel's seat can rest in. Put some rubber or alike on the edges of the nudge - to make it snug and done. Less work and very effective. No scarring up your reels either.

    • @JelsmaOutdoors
      @JelsmaOutdoors  Před 6 lety +2

      TheOpelkoenjas You could, but cost, time, and you would have to orient tge spike in the correct direction. also what happens when the fish runs cross and causes rotational force.

    Listing the size of PVC would be helpful. Eyeballing it I'd say its 2", 3" tops - hard to say due to it being relative to your hands, so judging by the size of the torch tip to the OD/ID of the pipe.

      Did a little searching around. I'm using your torch and bottle method and then I'm going to 45 degree the ends and attach some rebar with hose clamps.

      @@thomaswolf9297 we have optimized the cut angle in a second video so unless you have a rock beach the solid PVC spike is best.

      @@JelsmaOutdoors My shore spots alternate between sand and rock - I may make some of both. Here in the north Mississippi we have some serious fish, though. Just a few days ago I had something 100+lbs on, couldn't believe the pull, went around a fallen tree and wiggled off a circle hook somehow.
      But yea, flatheads, mudcats, sturgeon, huge northerns, huge dogfish - we get nailed all the time. What I've been doing is staking my old metal holders in and wedging them with tree roots and bricks, then run for my pole when I hear the drag lol...

    gr8 tip really is handy to use haha hate it wen the rod rests on sharp edges. makes me feel so uneasy

  • @Mike-mm8nz

    Leave it unflared and use a rubber mallet to set it. Been using the same 4 spikes for 6 yrs. You can’t hit that flared end.

    have you ever tried using boiling water to soften the edge for shaping it?

    • @JelsmaOutdoors
      @JelsmaOutdoors  Před 5 lety

      yes, but it takes to long and is easier to apply direct heat with torch.

      @@JelsmaOutdoors Probably causes the PVC to leech chemicals as well. I'd say use a torch and sand it down afterward for the best results.

    So what is the difference between the 90 degree factory edge impinging on the rod seat and the 90 degree edge you created? Still 90 degrees.

    • @JelsmaOutdoors
      @JelsmaOutdoors  Před 6 lety

      Marlon Knighton if the reel is resting on the raw pvc edge creates an area on high tension. this can create stress cracks.

    • @JelsmaOutdoors
      @JelsmaOutdoors  Před 6 lety

      +Marlon Knighton the rolled edge supports the reels seat.

    do you find a 5 foot piece of pvc to be perfect as a sand spike or do you recommend a short length?

    • @JelsmaOutdoors
      @JelsmaOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      5 foot is perfect for out coast and sand texture. Softer sand a shorter spike will give less advantage to the fish on pulling it form the sand.

    The flared ends are unnecessary and useless. Waste of time and only weaken your spikes.
