  • First 3 levels of Battle-Girl ("Battle Girl"), a retro/arcade-style top-down shooter game for Mac OS, released by Ultra/United Games in 1997. Some of you might remember this totally classic game which became popular very quickly in the Mac gaming scene in 97. I still remember seeing who could get the highest score among my friends. ;) Some of the big appeal of this game was the clean but stylish vector "TripTronic" graphics, fast-paced electronic music, and even more fast-paced gameplay. Getting into the higher levels, the game gets seriously intense!
I think this is the only footage of Battle Girl posted on CZcams thus far!
Sorry the framerate is a bit choppy - I recorded this using Snapz on an original Rev.A iMac G3 233mhz so I had to record at a low framerate and resolution.

I loved this game back in the day. I remember the frame rate was better than this video though.

It does run at a much better fps than this video shows, probably 30 but maybe even more. I still enjoy this one a lot more than geometry wars or robotron and a few dozen of their clones, not as much as nex machina though. There was also a windows release.

I've been wondering for years whether Battle-Girl was a direct influence on Geometry Wars or not (and am thinking about this again now that GW3 is out, which changes the aesthetic a little).
Both of them were obviously influenced by the gameplay of Robotron: 2084, and by the look of Atari vector arcade games like Tempest and Star Wars (in both games, the shape of the ship is imitating the "claw" from Tempest). So the similarities could just be convergent evolution among videogame nostalgics. But it's remarkable how many things about these games are similar. Geometry Wars: Galaxies even had the levels with weird polygonal boundaries.
The main difference between the two is the game mechanic that exists beyond "shoot all the enemies": Battle-Girl has the pods that you have to defend in a vaguely Robotron/Defender-like manner, whereas Geometry Wars (starting with Retro Evolved 2) has the geoms.
