The gouache-painting is the most outstanding, in my opinion. All three are beautiful!
❤❤❤I love the softness of the watercolour but the gouache one oh my ❤❤❤
They are all beautiful, but the gouache one turned out truly gorgeous! Thank you for taking the time to do this side by side comparison :)
And if you can add it, I would like to the see full length tutorial for the gouache painting.
I’m new to watercolor. 30+ years of acrylic and gouache. I use Jo Sonja brand paint that was labeled gouache for 20 or so years then velvet matte acrylics and now professional artist paints. They are tube paints and can be reactivated by water to a degree. To solve the waste of paint issue we just use a stay-wet palette. Simply pop the cover on and your paint can last months. Just go back every week or so and add some water to the sponge underneath the palette paper. Easy peasy. Before all of you start hating me, I am learning to use watercolors.
Beautiful!
I would love a full length tutorial of both watercolor and gouache, but if I can only choose one, gouache 😊
Interesting. I love watercolors because they never dry up permanently and you don't have to worry about stains on clothes and surfaces. Easier clean up! Thank you, they all look good! ❤
The gouache one has more range in values than the others. But it’s not the medium, it’s just that WC is definitely more time consuming to get that much of a range in value and it would also have required negative painting to get the level of details in the flowers.
As you’ve said, WC is much easier to deal with for not having to stay put for a long period of time (single mom of 3 boys here 2, 4 and 6 so yeah… team WC!!! 😂)
The Gouache is also much more of an illustrative style and seems flatter, cartoonish, poster-ish. WC can have so much more texture to it compared to gouache.
wonderful comparison Emma Jane!
I like the Gouache picture the best, it has more detail and depth to it. I've never used Acrylics, but because of the fussiness of them, I'm not interested in trying them out. I have the Caran d'ache Gouache pallet and a 5-tube set of Holbein Gouache to play around with. I like the vivid, opaqueness of Gouache. It's probably why I tend to not water down my watercolor paints enough, I like the more opaque look.
I started with color pencils and then watercolor. Still learning it all. Including gouache. I don’t much like acrylics but I want to learn at some point, but not to soon. Gouache is just beautiful.
I prefer the gouache flowers but by far the watercolor background. Great comparison tutorial!!
This was highly helpful, Ty Emma! I went from a basic 6 color palette of watercolors that was a gift as a kid (& I think I tried it on regular multi purpose paper), that was frustrating bc I didn’t have any instructions on building layers. It seemed impossible to get a saturated color. Fast forward to retirement age and a frighteningly major hospitalization, and the feeling that I’d never create in any medium that I was doing previously (fiber arts and processing/spinning wools & silks, etc. Before that, pyrography and musical instruments from dried gourds), and then I stumbled across a handful of excellent artists, like you! 💜
From last Fall, I’ve treated myself to upgrading my wc from inexpensive pans, to DS tubes. Also better paper and brushes. I’m drawn to the wc and the gouache painting’s , I think bc that’s my focus right now, but they are all equally beautiful to my eye’s and look forward to trying them all in the future.
Apologies for the long comment here, but wanted to answer your question about which tutorials we’d like to see most…but I also wanted to let you know how much you have given to me in this hopeful time of returning to the creativity I crave! I can see a gouache set in my future too ;) Thank you for all you do sweet lady 👩🏼🎨🙏🌻
Hi Emma, They'll all beautiful, but I’m partial to watercolor as well. So that would be my choice if you do a more realistic version. As a FYI: Many of us don’t realize that there’s a water-based gouache and an acrylic-based gouache. Traditional gouache (water-based) is mixed with gum arabic, while acrylic gouache has an acrylic-based binder. Once dry, the acrylic gouache can’t be reactivated with water while the water-based gouache can. So when you use acrylic gouache you don’t want to place color in a palette or it will dry on you, but water-based gouache is like watercolor and can be reactivated with water and can be placed in a palette. Thanks for another amazing tutorial Emma! 😊💕
Good to know, thanks.
I love them all, but would really appreciate a full tutorial on the watercolor one. I've never painted with acrylics. I'm 65 & self-taught. I began painting 6 years ago & fell in love with watercolor. Thanks to you & all the other wonderful artists who share their tutorials on CZcams.
I’m one of the few who didn’t start with acrylic, I always wanted to paint in watercolour.
I like all of these. Each medium has its strengths and limitations. I’ve used acrylics mostly as a finishing layer over watercolour and except for one paint night at a local pub, that’s all I’ve ever done with it.
I agree with you 1000% about acrylic. It’s a mess, and even while wearing long-sleeved smocks, I’ve ruined a bunch of clothes. I mainly use gouache to fix watercolor mistakes. When I’ve used it alone the results always appear chalky, even with top grade brands of paint. Watercolor is my favorite medium to work in, bc of its luminosity and immediacy. There’s something wild and raw -poetic? - about it. Even after mastering water control, you’re always walking a tightrope in a way, bc it’s water, and I love that. Thanks for all your wonderful videos, Emma.
Wow - loved all of them - but Gouache was my favourite
I really enjoyed seeing the same painting done in different mediums. I started with oil paints but didn’t like the smell or having to use a solvent so switched to acrylics. I struggled because it dried too quickly and had difficulty blending before it dried. I had always thought watercolor was a more difficult medium to learn, but tried it and fell in love with it. I love the same things about it that you do. I recently bought primary colors in gouache but trying to figure it out. I love all the paintings here but the gouache one sticks out for me. I would love to see more gouache paintings. Thank you Emma for another great video.
You brought up some great differences between the mediums. I still like watercolors best. I have the others, but get the most joy playing with watercolors!
So beautiful! Hydrangeas are my favourite flowers. Would love an in depth for gouche or acrylics please. Thanks!
Watercolor for me.... thanks for sharing your talent
Wonderful seeing the difference. Thanks
I've tried acrylic painting, I do not like it nearly as much.as I do watercolor. I'm a total newbie with painting anything. Love your videos. I.would love to see this done in watercolor as a full tutorial. You do such awesome work. Thank you
All off the paintings is Beautiful. Me on the other hand love painting with Acrylic. I am still new to watercolor.
I've learned a few techniques of keeping the acrylic paint moist on the pallet for longer.
I love watching your watercolor tutorials. Thank you for your detailed explination.
Love all three ! I love how watercolor reacts on wet on wet and that is why I got into it ! But I would love the full length video on gouache!
Hi, I love the watercolor painting. I’m just partial to the look. I’m slowly beginning to like working with gouache, but not a true fan yet. You’re right about acrylic… learned to paint with the medium… but watercolor is my go to because you can create so many effects. Thanks for today’s tutorial. Oh, and any slower version is good by me. Just love your teaching. ❤
Beautiful! I loved the gouache one, although the watercolor one looks great too.. I'm self-taught, I started using watercolors two years ago and I loved it. Recently I purchased a jelly gouache set, can't wait to try it. Thanks for the tutorial Emma.
If you want to explore acrylic more, you can make it last longer by spritzing it with water, maybe every 10-15 minutes, using a spray bottle. Sta-wet palettes also help. I have covered my palette with cling wrap and used it the next day. I also use disposable palettes for clean up. Just allow the leftover paint to dry on the palette and toss. No paints down the drain.
I also use watercolor, and it is more convenient cleanup. The above tips I’ve learned from other acrylic artists, and they help a lot!
Wow! was shocked by how much I love the gouache one! I have gouache paints, but have never tried them. Would love a tutorial with gouache. Thanks Emma, these are all beautiful.
Thank you. I learned so much. Love them all. I dove straight into watercolor and never worked in acrylic. I just love the look of watercolor.
All 4 are wonderful.
I started in oil but stopped when I left the area that my instructor was. Decided to try watercolor and am having fun with it but also miss oil. Out of the three you painted I think I like the gouache the best. They’re all wonderful though.
I painted for a long time with acrylics. I got tired of the muss and fuss of it. Now I use watercolor and/or gouache. Love them both. I love the look of gouache the most but just love playing around with watercolors. There is just something magical to me about pulling out dry cakes of watercolor and being able to wet them and go.
I really like the gouache as there seems to be more detail. Would love to see a full length tutorial.
I prefer the look of your guache painting on this one
Surprisingly, I liked the acrylic.
I started with acrylic as well and kind of left it behind for the exact same reasons I ruined my clothes and made a mess. I walked away, came back forgot to clean the pallet and it was a big mess and then I discovered you ….so I switched to watercolor. Thank you so much for this tutorial. It’s really helpful to see the three altogether and now I’m excited to try some gouache!
Can you make a video of painting shoes? I would love to see that!
They are all beautiful, Emma. You make it look so easy, lol. I am nowhere near your level and still a newbie, but I love the results I get with digital art first, acrylic second, gouache third, and watercolor last. I LOVE watercolor the most because it's easy to clean up and easy to take out and about, and I use it the most, not counting digital, but still get the worst results with it. I finally ordered some cotton paper to see if it will make it easier for me but haven't used it yet as I feel I"m not good enough yet for the expensive paper, lol.
Definitely like the wash one is the best
Thank you, Emma. It was great seeing all the paintings on the same page to compare them. You are so clever. ❤ I like the gouache best then the watercolour. A tutorial on a gouache real-time painting would be very helpful. Thanks!❤❤❤❤
Would love to see a real time tutorial on gouache!! It's beautiful!!
I started with watercolor and It is my first love. When I started to learn gouache it was so much easier. I love it. But wc is still my fav.
What a fun video ! I really enjoyed it. Your gouache painting is lovely.
I'm new to painting. ALL of yours are beautiful!! I'm retired and decided I'd like to learn how to use this art to help me relax. Since, I've picked watercolors ... I'd like to see your tutorial with those. I love hydrangeas ❤❤❤
Its funny you mentioned getting away from acrylics because of the fact that the paints dry up quickly and can't be revived with water. Thats the reason I have abandoned them too. Between working, grandchild care and a busy volunteer and social life, I was frustrated I couldn't simply take up where I left off. I always loved the way watercolor paintings looked and decided to give it a try a year ago and haven't looked back. I use a little white gouache from time to time but maybe will consider using more. Thx
I didn't realize how beatific gouache is!
Love these. It was wonderful to see all mediums. I am partial to watercolor. Thanks for all the nice videos you do.
Gouache!
Great video. I love watercolor for ease of use. The qouche was beautiful too. I've only used white qouche to mix with watercolor to get very light colors.
Wow! All the paintings looked fabulous with the different media you used! But Watercolor it is! And then gouache! Acrylic No! No! I agree with you how messy of a medium it is to clean up after. And watercolor is so beautiful and transparent and makes the paintings look so airy! Your tutorials are so amazing to follow and give so much inspiration! Wish I could paint as easily as you do! But I know! It takes practice, which is my main weakness! But I enjoy every tutorial you put out there and do not miss on any! Thank you for all your efforts! It’s so well worth it, as you just delight us wannabe artists to the moon!
All are beautiful and I paint with all three. I tend more towards watercolor and gauche. Would love to see the full length tutorial in either of those.
Question: could you highlight watercolor with white acrylic??? Please do a slow full tutorial… I love this painting!
Gouache would be happy medium
I would love to see the gouache painting
All 3 are nice but the gouache really catches the eye! Never used it and would love to try!
Hi Emma - Fantastic video, would love to see a video on watercolor - step by step on these hydrangeas. Thanks!!
I love the watercolor! A tutorial would be great.
Emma - I would love tutorial on all three watercolor gouache and acrylic! Including the brands and colors so that I could attempt it on my own. It would be fun to do the same painting in all of the mediums and try them for myself. I love hydrangeas!!! They are lovely.
I love Watercolours also but trying to learn Gouache. There’s a learning curve that I haven’t quite mastered yet so a tutorial would be great. Have a nice Summer! Cheers from Gatineau Quebec 🎨
Hey Emma. I was waiting for this video ever since you teased it on instagram. I love the comparison of the different mediums. Although I am a watercolor junkie, I found myself liking the gouache the most here because of the detail and depth you got with the petals. The little pop of light green/yellow made it for me. It's so vibrant! But, that being said I enjoyed watching the watercolor version the most and would love a full blown tut of that one, I think. Thank you for showing this!
I loved this video! And I would love to see a tutorial about acrylic painting. ♥
I would like a tutorial on the watercolor.
I am a beginner and love watercolour but will definitly try gouache. Acrylics is so different but there is one thing you did not mention. Acrylics has structure aka "Impasto" which can add a new level to your drawing. Thanks for your work.
I thought the gouache really popped the most, though I love watercolors. They're all so pretty though. Love your videos!
I like the watercolor and gouache. I also would like a tutorial for watercolor and gouache. All are pretty though. Thank you Emma.
Really interesting but I am like you and like my watercolours.
PS Caran D'Ache has a pan set of gouache paints. They are not the jellied kind. I love them. I got them on Amazon
I always love your watercolours but gouache fascinates me and would love to learn more the bit I struggle with is consistency etc and paper? So more gouache please emma😊
Beautiful, I would love to paint the gouache.
I liked them all, but the gouache is most vibrant to me. I'm partial to watercolor most of the time for its softness and gentle edges. Would love a tutorial!
Watercolor tutorial please.your art is beautiful
Hey Emma! I'm a longtime follower of your videos and always appreciate your content so much--especially tutorials!
I would LOVE to see this as a gouache tutorial! I think I would actually go pick up some decent gouache for the occasion!
That was really fun. I did start with acrylic but like you time does not allow for the clean up. I prefer to paint my canvases with acrylic. I then moved to gouache and a sketch book mostly for skill practice and to just relax and paint. I have a lot to learn with gouache. I got some watercolors for my bday this may and have really enjoyed them. I would like to see your gouache tutorial if I had to choose.
All beautiful, but gouache stood out.😊
Acrylic paint is wonderful if you use good brands, liquitex is for children, use a good brand and it can look like an oil painting. Please practice with a good brand and do another tutorial, love the paintings however!
I never tried acrylics (except of course for a few POSCA markers I own and eventually use for highlighting and details). Watercolors and gouache are really my gems. Watercolor mostly because of its transparency, and the fact that it’s so portable. I prefere using half pans. Being able to reactivate the paints once they’re left on the palette is a must for me, and I don’t even have kids 😂.
I really do not intend trying acrylics anytime soon, but I’d really like to know if there is a specific kind of acrylic paint, like fluid or soft body (I don’t know 😅) to be used on paper instead of canvases.
Hi Emma! I was going to pick the watercolor but in comparison I think I like the gouache best.
Seriously, with your artistic talent you could use poster paint and it would look great!
Beautiful painting as always!
Thank you for sharing this very inspiring video!
So beautiful! Love all of them
All bueatiful hard to pick i want to try gouache but need to buy it.
Thank you Emma for this tutorial, really so helpful as I didnt really understand the different mediums. I have to say I love the watercolor but I am intrigued to try the guauche
Hullo Emma, I am a watercolorist. I worked as a studio artist in a design firm that did a lot of advertising and we used gouache. It photographed the best, yet I don’t have any work from those times as everything is tossed into the trash after the photos are taken! Company policy for those times was quite harsh! Today everything is on the computer and easily stored! I have trouble thinking of gouache as a fine art medium. It was NOT considered one when I was using it! I am even more curious about acrylic-gouache a supposedly “new” medium. I wonder if you have tried it? I will always pick watercolor videos, but please feel free to branch out and try something new or newer to you for more excitement! I am sure your audience will watch!
I also started with acrylic, but my favorite is watercolor. It's helpful to be able to walk away and come back to a painting. You helped me learn to love watercolor.
love this, Emma!
Love this. Acrylic You can put in a plastic box with kitchenpaper under it and then put it in the refridgerator. So I can used it when ever I want to use it
Have you tried the Masterson sta-wet acrylic palette? Paints will stay workable for weeks.
I use a plastic container (of 1 liter of ice), I put the acrylic paint on the lid, and when I stop, I put the lid on the container. This way I can use the same paint for days without it drying out. maybe spray something wet. By the way, I love the black and with ❤ . I use inkt and watercolor. maybe you could try that to.
Have you tried using a wet palette for acrylics? The paints will stay workable for days.
I'd love to see a sneaker painting video.
I have never used acrylic for art work. Frankly, I can’t be bothered with the clean up involved. I have only ever used white gouache. I have added watercolour to get a colour I want.
It was a great video.
I'd like to learn more about gouache
Thanks
I started with acrylics, but once I started using watercolors, I was in love! After about a year of mostly watercolor, I had to reteach myself acrylics, but it never felt right again. I never felt like I could get the blends and things I wanted.
I like them all but am less familiar with gouache so would love to see a tutorial with that.
Oh, these are stunning and my favorite flower in my favorite colors!! You are such a great artist to learn from. In my opinion the gouache is the prettiest. I've never used that medium but would love to learn. With that being said, I'm really into watercolor right now and am just getting some new supplies for my birthday. So I would love to see a tutorial on either the gouache or the watercolor ( mostly the watercolor, tho). Whatever you choose to do, thanks for this video and for showing us the difference in all these mediums. Keep up the beautiful painting! ❤❤❤❤
Loved them all. I also paint with gouache and acrylic so choose whichever one you want.
Hi Emma, great video with one of my favourite flowers! I use all of these media (and more), but I always choose the medium for the idea I want to paint. At the moment, I tend to use watercolour/ watercolour markers and pencils the most, but also gouache. But it may change again...For acrylic gouache and acrylics, I bought stay-wet palletes - a game changer! The paints stay wet for days and weeks inside - maybe it helps you to find your way back to acrylics ❤ I enjoy your videos so much - I am stiill waiting for the next one! D.
I love watercolor. Always have, always will. With acrylics, I definitely favor impressionistic style painting. Of the above paintings you did, the watercolor is definitely the most intriguing and magical looking and I love watching you do them!
I love the color variation you got from the gouache, and I’d love to see more from you in that medium!
Also, using a stay-wet palette has been a game changer for acrylic and gouache . Just pop the lid on when you need to walk away and the paint stays workable.
Love your sketch
I like the watercolor best. I think doing those flowers with Neocolors 11 would have been awesome too! Like you did your trees video with Neocolor 11. Would love to see more Neo 11 vids. Love that medium. Aloha Sharon
Hey Emma Jane, do you have to use different brushes for each paint? I love watercolors. I use the most but i want to try quache one day. Before i had kids i used acrylic and made very big paintings. That I don’t like anymore. Now i am painting in my journal. Love that. ❤❤❤ thanks for the video. 😊
I love all three mediums but don't paint with acrylic if I don't have a lot of time. Cleaning the brushes right away is more of an issue for me. The stay wet palettes work well to keep the paint viable but you cannot leave those darn brushes. All three of your painting were just lovely. I wish I could get my leaves to look better. That is where I could use a more in depth lesson.
All 3 are beautiful! I’ve always liked the look of watercolor the most but the painting gouache is stunning!
