- How do you layer gouache? Today I'm sharing how I layer gouache with my newest "glazing" technique that is common for watercolor. Instead of thick opaque paint, I'm adding water and carefully layering the gouache which creates an interesting visual blend. I'll also share thoughts about seeing color and light in the landscape. #gouache

Your trees have mullets lol. Love the painting!
Haha!
Thank you Sarah. Took copious notes. I've perfected creating muddy colors, lol. Peace.
Most easiest way to paint with guache. I love your style your beautiful voice. You are very honest n true artist who truly helps others by explaining everything in detail. Very impressive ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much 🥰
Great tutorial!
Thank you for sharing your planning process. So few artists share those first crucial stages.
I’m glad that part was helpful to hear
Lovely! I really love seeing your demos and tutorials
Thank you for demonstrating the use of the flat brush to make the pine needles (as tedious as it is)! Painting complex foliage is difficult for me, especially for things like pines, ferns and moss, which I love to admire and paint,, but can't capture them very well (yet!).
These happy trees came out beautifully, you give so much life and color to the little trees. :)
Trees and light- two of my favorite things!!!
I hope you're taking care of yourself and thank you for what you do. 💛
You're very welcome!
This is gorgeous! Thank you for your inspiration Sarah.
Great video!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much Sarah, great tutorial.
Finally just what I've been searching for, thanks
Loved it.. Thank you so much for sharing...
Every brush stroke I am in awe. Love this so much and I’ve learned so much from your videos!
Thank you so much! This was so helpful
Omigosh! I'm struggling to pick out colours when the light hits trees and this is SUPER helpful. Will give these colour "tricks" a try - thanks so much for the really friendly explanation, Sarah!
Have fun! Been loving your plein air videos :D
Wow amazing video! Sarah, your tutorials are the absolute best. So many great tips. Thank you.
Love all of this. I actually ordered those same schmincke gouache colors after seeing your unboxing, I just loved the mixes you got with them, and had to try them for myself.
Great art comes from the everyday experience. Excellent demo and painting study.
great texture to the pine needles 😀
Beautiful painting and lovely tutorial!🌸✨ This video is really inspiring.☺🦋🌿
Very nice-and helpful 😊
Beautiful 🎨
So enjoyable and helpful! I'm finally getting back into gouache now that I'm back at home from college, and this was great motivation and guidance to get started :D
Really beautiful. Just before going on my trip, I received my order of gouache. Cannot wait to start using it.
This is a very helpful tutorial with wonderful video production ... you seem to be great at everything! Thank you Sarah!
Thank you so much!
Best tutorial
Wow great tutorial. Very helpful to all beginner artist. And also me. I learned a lot in this video🤩💗thank you so much
It's lovely to see you using various brush shapes for different textures. It's so easy to pick up a round and try to make it do all the things, so it's very useful to see you taking the trouble to swap around shapes throughout xx
Sometimes I stick with one big flat brush for a whole painting, which is good for helping me to be creative with mark making, or to really get to know a brush. But otherwise just use whatever tool suits the task best :)
I just discovered your channel, wouaou, thanks for sharing technics and tips about gouache.
Beautiful trees Sarah! Thanks so much for the awesome tutorial... Need to be me some Gouache! lol! 💚
Wow. I'm learning a lot from you Sarah. You're an exceptional artist and teacher. I recently finished a gouache study of a tree and the more I worked on it, the muddier and flatter it got. I'll try again and use the pre-mixed colors - love that! Best to you.
i really love your gouache paintings ^_^ wonderful sketch ^_^
Thank you so much 😀
Such a helpful tutorial, thank you so much for putting in all the time and effort it takes to make such a great instruction!!❤️
You are so welcome!
I love the colours you use for the tree trunks, thanks for the inspiration and helpful instruction!

No reason to be scared! Do it for the fun of it. Learn each time. Enjoy.
Loved this, Sarah. It just so happens that I am working on some dark woodsy scenes and this was very helpful for highlights and shadows. Thank you for sharing!
Sounds lovely!
I always learn something new and helpful, thanks!😃 I struggle with the bare branches of winter, so overwhelming, I’d love to hear your approach.
Great suggestion!
I really enjoyed this video! Very informative and useful.with some excellent tips for a newbie like me. Thank you, and I will definitely be checking out your other gauche videos.
Enjoy! 😃

Awesome, great to hear- have fun!
Awesome painting! I love the light and shadows. I'm really into using negative space on toned paper, so now I want to try this myself, but with the toned paper for the brown of the trunks.
Go for it- That will be pretty!
Thanks Sarah, really interesting. Recently starting following, enjoying binging your posts 🤗
Welcome!
Beautiful well explained video. Thank you for sharing 💚
You are so welcome
So, as I mentioned in a previous comment, your videos are really inspiring me try to gouache! I dipped my toes in a couple of years ago when I was watching Steve Huston's amazing sketchbook videos in gouache, but I hadn't even really tried watercolor yet, and was just getting back into art, and I was flummoxed. I'm working on 100 animals in watercolor right now (and I swear, I'm going to finally get the first video through editing and uploaded tonight!!), but after I'm done with that I'm going to dive into gouche! I'm so excited. I'm looking forward to joining your patreon at the beginning of the month, too! Thanks so much for making such awesome content, and sorry about this ginormous comment!! 😁
That's so exciting! I hope you have tons of fun with gouache :)
Okay wow, I now have a greater understanding about gouache and how it is definitely different from my watercolors. I truly appreciate your detailed explanation of each step of the process, progress, and your thoughts on how & why you did this painting. Very interesting, informative and a wonderful fun enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing this & I’m definitely going to have to give gouache a try soon in addition to watercolor painting now.
I love hearing that you get more out of a video than just enjoyment 😄
Your guidance is spot on! Now if I could just capture your magic :) TY
You'll create your own magic :D
💓
Thank you 💜 So often people only include a narritive of what they're doing. What colour, what brush, what mixture. Including the why is far more useful and the bit that lets us apply that thinking to our own work. Such a beautiful study with super vibrant color, lovin it lots.
Glad that is helpful! I do this in my classes because I feel like it benefits the viewer more and now this way of teaching is very easy and normal for me!
Really loved and enjoyed watching your video that video was very helpful thank you so much for sharing this video with us all will definitely be trying to paint this.
Glad it was helpful!
@@SarahBurnsStudio thank you so much for taking the time to reply me back it really means a lot to me.
Enjoyed learning from this video. I keep trying with gouache but it’s a slow process. Thanks 😊
You can do it! It takes time and patience like everything else ;)
I believe we are in need of a complete paints and brushes and books and pads collection video,😏☺️💖 pleeeaaassee
Oh my gosh, yes!
You mean like an art supplies video "what I use" type thing?
@@SarahBurnsStudio full collection of everything you have 😘 it'll be like 'my makeup collection' but with Art stuff 🥰🥰
❤️❤️
Awesome video! I always love your color palette. What toned paper were you using?
Thanks for sharing💜
This one is just a random craft paper notebook I got at a hobby store, nothing fancy. I think it’s 90lb weight.
Stillman and Burns makes toned watercolor paper. Strathmore 400 spiral bound, Toned Tan (or gray) is 80 lb, 118 g/m is what I have from Hobby Lobby. $7.49 for A5 size, 50 sheets of paper, hot pressed. Very smooth. It’s a tad thin for what I am used to using. I think I will spend a little more cash, and try the Stillman and Burns. 👍🖌
Love your channel so much. I subscribed! Can you mention where you got this particular toned paper sketchbook from? Or did you make it yourself?
That one is a generic beige sketchbook from a craft store! There’s no name on it
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thank you for replying!!
A great tutorial - thank you! May I ask what paper pad you're using? I tried looking for it on your supply list but I can't see any tan paper options.
This is a random drawing sketchbook I found at Hobbycraft, it doesn't have a name on it
💚🌲💙🌲💜
Where are you Sorting your toned paper please I'm struggling to find the same supplier for consistency
My favorite kind is Stillman & Birn Nova
