  • In episode 44 of Whisky in SV, I did a blind tasting of four amazing 18 Year sherried Scotch whiskies: the over-priced Macallan 18, the Tamdhu 18 (a.k.a. the Macallan killer), the Bunnahabhain 18, and the Speyburn 18. I have to admit, I have a lot more Macallans than I am comfortable admitting to, so I was really hoping the Macallan 18 would do well. But, in all honestly, it was just too thin, and could not even stand up to the Speyburn which costs a quarter of what it does. Overall, if you are going to buy Macallan 18, I have to say, just don't! Buy the Tamdhu 18 instead, and both your wallet and your palate will thank you for it. The Bunna 18 is also an amazing whisky offered at a great value but the profile is very different from Macallan. #whiskyinsv • #WhiskyInSV 044: Macal...

AnCnoc 24 also works in this department. Sherry and bourbon cask, but the sherry shines.

True if we only consider cost range but I wanted to stick yo 18 YOs :) thanks for watching!

@@whiskyinsv Indeed. It was just the flavor profile and the price. I tried many 18+ yo and found that one a good replacement when Macallan went downhill or uphill pricewise.

I love Speyburn, one of the most underrated. I also like Ancnoc & glen moray 18

Agreed, all three still at great value compared to the big names.

You can't beat blind tastings for removing prejudices and preconceptions, although this is a semi-blind of course. Well done for getting them all correct. I suspect the reason you thought the Mac18 a little 'thin' is more to do with it being the only one which is chill filtered rather than the slightly lower ABV. I think the hint of peat you're picking up in the Bunna 18 is more than likely a result of trace elements left behind in the various production equipment from the heavily peated spirit they occasionally produce.

Tamdhu 18 is not available in Mumbai, India. So I will have to get it from Dutyfree soon.

Tamdhu is $390 from where I’m from🤦🏻‍♂️ just slightly cheaper than Macallan which is $430. Just bought the speyburn 18, hoping to try it soon.. I saw reviewer say the speyburn 18 taste like a Glenlivet 18 on steroids😂

That is too bad that Tamdhu pricing is getting on par with Macallan, but honestly between the two, I would take Tamdhu any day. Speyburn 18 is not as good as Tamdhu but it can be had for way less money, so value wise it is a no-brainer for sure. It is a solid dram.

Great content. Really enjoyed the format and always respect blind tastings. I just picked up a bottle of the Speyburn 18 that I sampled at a local festival, so I haven't had a chance to really dig into it yet, but based on just one nose/sip I instantly saw the quality/value in it. I also had a thought that it might be a really good alternate to Highland Park 18 but it's been awhile since I've had a HP18. If you have both open, try a side by side and let me know your thoughts. HP18 is $75 more than Speyburn 18 in my market. (Eastern Canada) Cheers!

I was recently debating which two bottles to buy out of these : Bunna 18, Tamdhu 18, Mortlach 16, Tobermory 21, Ledaig 18, Craigellachie 17.
    Which two would you pick?

    • @whiskyinsv

Really depends on ur preferences and prices you can acquire them at but personally I love the Tamdhu 18 the most followed by bunna 18!
