  • Rumours are circling Ottawa, that federal parties could agree to end the spring session of Parliament early. This as polling shows nothing the Liberals have done since the new year, has made them any more popular.

@@StephenRoss-po1rp I can't speak for the rest of them, but the MP in the city I work in attends charity events, works at local fund-raisers, visits schools and does all sorts of community based activities when Parliament is not in session. The cool part is that she often does it in partnership with the former Conservative candidate she defeated to get into office. I personally know them both and I'd give either one my vote if I wasn't 400 yards outside of the riding.
So... yup. There are some good ones out there.
FWIW, the idea is that they're supposed to use the out-of-session time to find out what their riding's concerns are and bring it back to Parliament (representation).
      That's largely gone, though.
I imagine you'll see a lot of partisan campaigning among some members instead of actually doing what they're supposed to be doing.

      @@jonk5669 Who knows?
But if it costs, say $10,000 for a 5 day week, if you actually total up the cost difference between what it would cost for private citizens like you or I and what it costs when you have to travel with a private jet that sits around (with its crew) in case there is an emergency back in Ottawa, and you need to house and feed those people as well as your security entourage....
      You'll realize he's not over-spending.
The cost of operating a Challenger 600 is $8500 per hour of engine-on time, and the standard stand-by fee for a private jet is 2 hours of flying time charged for every day it sits still.
So, 5 days of PM vacation (regardless of who the PM is) beyond driving distance from Ottawa costs a minimum of $85,000 just for the plane he MUST take.
Then the salaries, food and lodging for everyone who he has to take with him.
Suddenly $100,000 seems fairly frugal (especially compared to what it costs to move around a US President).
Should the PM pay the total cost of his vacation?
      I'd say no.
He should only pay what the same vacation would cost if he was doing it as a private citizen.
Should a PM using this same jet to go to events that they are attending as a candidate or party member for the benefit of their party?
      I'd say NO.
If it's for the benefit of the party, then the party should pay for it.
