- If I can't visit Disneyland, I want to bring a little Disney-inspired magic to my bookshelf. This haunted book nook uses a Pepper's Ghost illusion to bring the haunt to any home. Using a Timmkoo MP4 player and some bits and bobs, a tiny ghost will beckon you to your doom.

This has to be the most gorgeous book nook I have seen! I love it!
You are too kind! Thank you. I'm a little all over the place on project topics so I'm really happy you found a little joy in this one.
Wow, probably one of the best book nook I've seen! All details are verified, great сolors and the effect is super realistic👍
Thank you! I appreciate that. I have another nook that is getting really close to being done... Snow White Evil Queen Dungeon... really need to hunker down and wrap it up! Thanks for watching!
A few days ago I've never heard of book nooks. After watching tons of videos on how to make them, so far yours is the best I've seen! The mirror placement is still confusing but I'm going to figure it out. I also like that lighting set up. I like building miniatures using wood so I can do that part. I love the New Orleans inspired door. That's where I live!😁
There are a couple of effects going on in the nook. One is the peppers ghost where I'm basically using a piece of clear plastic to reflect the ghost video. There's also a mirror in the far back at a bit of an angle to reflect the door that is on the side. That helps give the illusion that the hallway continues through the doorway. I'm happy to hear from someone who knows that the New Orleans inspired elements worked! It's always a bit of a guess.
@@RandomMakingEncounters Ahhh... I got confused by that, too. So the back mirror has nothing to do with the ghost illusion.
@@jimbobjones9330 correct. The back mirror is to give the illusion of the hallway continuing on. So... really there are a couple of illusions going on in the nook.
really neat work ,excellent finish.brilliant use of the phone .Love it.
Thank you. I'm still working out a more permanent solution to embedded video. I think Raspberry Pi is my current solution for something that can be built to loop quality video and still be relatively compact. More to come on that if I can manage to get some videos posted. Appreciate the comment. Cheers!
Dude, you are so hard on yourself. This is one of the most spectacular things that I've ever seen. Bravo! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you so much. Feedback like this really helps keep us crazy creators going!
Wow! Amazing work and a super cool effect! Love this😍👻
Thanks! The real magic was finding that little video player! There are so many potential applications for incorporating video into projects. Thanks for watching!
Very cool and well done. One suggestion, at the end of the project it would have been great if you'd have shown off the finished project in a bookcase, the way a guest in your house might run across it. Martina over at Nerdforge made something like this and did an excellent job of showcasing it at the end of her video.
Great feedback! I've been thinking a lot about the structure of my videos and I think you've pointed out a really important point... have a great reveal at the end. I love Nerdforge! Great projects and great personalities. Thanks for watching and thank you for the input!
@@RandomMakingEncounters An idea for this is to maybe make a reel with it in a bookshelf to draw attention to your videos. Just discovered you and wow this was amazing. I'm a huge Haunted Mansion fan so this was wonderful to watch!
@@MichellePinsky outstanding idea! Thanks! All the best.
Holy cow! Love this and thank you sharing all the resources!
Thanks and you are very welcome!
Another amazing piece ! Your work is fantastic .
You're too kind! The projects are a bit like my mind-all over the place. I'm kinda lagging on videos right now and need to get a few more posted! All the best!
How freaking fantastic!! You are GREAT at this! Love it.
I appreciate it. Comments like this keep me going! All the best!
These videos are really amazing. I appreciate you sharing them.
Thanks! I appreciate that! More ideas are in the hopper... been procrastinating a bit but new year... new projects! Cheers!
I LOVE this one! It’s stunning! And you are such a good teacher! Thank you for sharing
Thanks! I’m happy you found it helpful. There are so many little things that go into making nooks and dioramas that it’s hard to capture it all in a video. I have a new video that is really close to being done… hopefully in the next few days!
Walt would be proud... Excellent work! And Happy New Year!
That is high and humbling praise indeed. Thank you for the compliment... I'm a wannabe Imagineer at heart.
Unbelievably beautiful! Great work!
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I'm working on a project right now that feels quite the opposite and is fighting me at every step so the positive vibes help for sure! All the best!
A note on the crackle it’s been my experience in the past that whenever you paint over the crackle -whatever direction you are painting becomes the longer grain of a crack, so it is directional.
Thanks for the tip. There's IS a bit of art and science to those crackle varnishes. You really can't fuss too much but it's good to also know that the direction of application can influence it as well! Cheers!
This is amazing!!! and such helpful instructions thank you.
You're very welcome and thank you for watching! I keep trying to get better at balancing run time to information. Cheers!
Super creative and spooky, you did an amazing job.😁👍 I love it!
Thanks! I really appreciate that! The feedback keeps me going. All the best!
Love this! Just subscribed, I can't wait for more!
More to come!
Howdy, and wow - this was absolutely amazing. I appreciate your explaining the process. lovelovelove
I'm glad you found it helpful and hopefully a little inspirational. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers!
The right angle clamps are great. Beautiful nook!
My philosophy on tools is "it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it". It's not my bank account's favorite saying though :)! Thanks and cheers!
I enjoyed your video. Great narration, the pace was great, the different video views and flow was great. I enjoyed this enough to sub (plus the nook was awesome :D )
Awesome feedback! I can be really long-winded at times and have been trying to really dial it in! Thank you!
This is so cool! You're such a good teacher!
Thanks! I appreciate that. More than anything, I hope people get inspired to make fun things. I tend to go a little overboard sometimes.... which I could probably get more projects done if I learned to control... but I hope there are little tips, tricks, and inspirations to be found in my videos. Thanks for the kind words and all the best!
Well done. Neat work. Polycrylic is my go-to finish too!
Thanks! I'm a big fan of water cleanup. I've probably inhaled way too many solvents over the years... or absorbed through my skin. I did some printmaking and my mentor used to say, "There's no such thing as an old printmaker." I'm sure he was referring to Ye Olden Times but between the solvents, talc and rosin... well... gloves and masks really didn't exist in the good old days. All the best!
This is fantastic!
I've been in the process of converting a dollhouse into the Haunted Mansion, but I've run into some road blocks. This has given me some helpful hints on how to work around them - specifically the floating candelabra hallway that I'm doing.
NICE! I find a lot of inspiration watching CZcams and I'm really happy to be a small source for others. All the best on the mansion!
This is really awesome! Thanks for sharing
You bet! Thanks for watching. Cheers!
This is just fabulous! Wow! I love it!
Thank you and thanks for watching! All the best.
Brilliant on every level! Bravo!
Too kind! Thank you. Disney is always inspiring to me... it's where the kids and I go for a creative recharge. All the best!
Thank you for sharing. I've always wanted to incorporate 'peppers ghost' effect in my Haunted displays.
I did a version of this without using video. Everything is the same but you used an illuminated 3D object... very much like the party scene in the Haunted Mansion. All the best with your projects!
@@RandomMakingEncounters Really? Is that in your video collection? I was even thinking of using an animated dance item, in a box, that portrays on the plexiglass like a pepper ghost affect. Scratching my head what to do :D Where did you get a 3D illuminated object?
This, sir, is amazing. I've been contemplating a book nook project and this is inspiring.
These are my favorite comments. Honestly… there’s so much that can be done with this format that there’s something for everyone. Whatever your interests, building worlds in little boxes is a really interesting challenge. All the best with your projects! Cheers!
Wow, this is sooooo cool! You are truly talented.
Thank you! Very kind of you to say so.
Beautiful work, very inspiring!
Thank you for the kind words. I hope it does inspire people to get a little crafty! Cheers!
It’s amazing! I love this so much!
Awe shucks!! Thank you. I truly appreciate it.
You are amazing. I am total a new fan of yours!
LOL! Too kind! Now that you've said that... probably should make more videos! All the best!
I love your paper ghost effect ! Beautifull creation, well done 👌
Thanks! The video loop from AtmosFX is really well done and sells the illusion.
Just incredible!!! I had the same problem with popsicle sticks but I had great luck with wooden coffee stirrers. They also warp a bit but I found that putting a heavy weight on top after staining took care of that. Hope that helps! 😊
Stir sticks make a lot more sense. I think the wood may be slightly different. Popsicle sticks seem like they’re reinforced with carbon fiber! Thanks for the suggestions!
@@RandomMakingEncounters 😂 I couldn’t agree more! I really hope to see more book nooks/dioramas from you in the future. I loved the video!
This is the most beautiful book nook I've seen in my life!!!
Sorry for the late reply. You're too kind! I appreciate it. I always say it's easier when you have inspiration and I find Disney to always be a great source of creative inspiration. Thanks for the comment and all the best!
This looks AWSOME! Great job :-)
Thanks! I appreciate the comment and feedback-keeps me making videos... that... and coffee.
NIce work! Love this. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks for the comment! I have more projects in mind than time but more to come for sure! Cheers!
AMAZING.. LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT... AND REALLY WELL MADE TOO... LOVE THIS...!
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. They truly help keep me inspired to do and share more! All the best.
I appreciate the detailed information. My kid is trying to learn how to do this stuff and a lot of makers seem very stingy about how much info they give!
I'm happy it helped. One of the biggest challenges is trying to get enough information in without ending up with a 3 hour video. It's hard to cram a project that takes many hours into a few minutes without skipping too much or being too boring. All the best and I'm happy to hear we have new makers making!
Awesome!!!
Thank you! Much appreciated. Trying to get another video put together. Too much day job too little weekend! Cheers!
This is amazing. good job.
Thanks! Sometimes, by the end of a project, I'm never quite sure what to think :). All the best!
Oh my, I loved this. Magical
Thank you! I really need to follow up with a new nook or it's gonna feel like a one hit wonder :) All the best!
LOVE IT!
Thanks! I appreciate it. I have a Pirates of the Caribbean themed nook on the bench now. Not as tricky as this one but I’m liking the vibe. Thanks again and all the best.
Hi! Checking in to see if you’ve decided to sell these at all! This one is just so amazing and I would love to have one! Thank you!
I could be open to maybe doing a commission. My biggest concern with this nook is the ghost. It's really, really kludgy and the artist in me would hate to make something for someone that just kinda conks out-even LEDs only last maybe 10 years :). I've been giving some real thought to how this could be more "plug it in and power it up". You can DM me on my Etsy shop and we could see if there's something we could come up with.
Realmente perfecto y aterrador!
Thank you! I'm glad you found it a little scary. All the best!
Exceptional!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback!
Fantastic
I need to find a more permanent solution to the video but I really love the Pepper's Ghost effect. Thanks for the comment!
Wow! That is impressive!
Thank you! Ideally, I'd like to find a way for the video to be completely built in so it can run constantly... I have ideas... maybe too many ideas that I can't always seem to focus on solving one thing at a time :)! Thanks for watching.
wow very cool affect, subscribed!
Thanks! Pretty easy with that little MP4 player. Really happy I stumbled across it.
Amazing 😍😍😍 great work 🤗👏
So glad you liked it! I'm noodling the next nook! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This is my inspiration video!!! You did amazing!! I hope I'll get that ghost thing figured out lol
I wish you the best on your project. I usually start with scrap cardboard and more disposable materials while I figure the space out. If you have an old CD/DVD case laying around, you can use that for the reflective material to bounce the ghost image off of to test. When you get down to wanting to try to get the best effect, you need to find the thinnest clear sheet that you can find that is still a bit rigid. The thicker the material... the more "double image" you end up with. Most of all... have fun doing it! Cheers!
@@RandomMakingEncounters Thank you so much for the info. It will definitely help a lot!
I love this one. Wish I could do something like this.
I know a lot of the tools I have make it easier to do more complex project. What I can say is I see a lot of really great nooks and dioramas on CZcams that use recycled boxes, paper, school glue, and craft paint. I have a dozen horrible failures for every one good project and I've been making things for almost fifty years. Start small and give yourself the grace and space to know that every project will be better than the one before and you might just be shocked with what you can create. All the best!
That is freakin amazing sir.
Thanks! I truly appreciate it. Cheers!
Very amazing work! 👌
Thank you. Disney is a great source of inspiration. Cheers!
Amazing!
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Superb ♥️
Thanks! Honestly... it was a little ambitious. It made my head hurt a little. Sometimes it's fun to just make things with more traditional materials and less technology.
Amazing
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind thoughts!
Awesome!!!!!!! 💖 it!!!!!
Thanks! I really appreciate the kind words. It keeps me going 😁.
Great nook in the end, very inspiring but some info missing. Seems you just touched upon the assembly and set up of the effect - a sketch of the layout might have been helpful. I didn’t understand the use of the plexiglas sheet, door/wall placement etc. Maybe a little too much time spent on finishing the walnut veneer because as you said, it wouldn’t really be seen. That being said I have enjoyed your booknook series, so thank you.
Spot on! I realized that so I have this video that maybe... hopefully... makes that bit slightly clearer. Here's a link - czcams.com/video/fU00wCL2pKY/video.htmlsi=riVz8S6vjFx15KfL.
Thanks for the feedback! It's always a challenge to figure out what makes it into the video and what gets thrown in the trash. I try to keep 'em under 20 minutes which means compressing hours and hours into minutes. Input like this helps me sort that out a bit.
All the best!
Lol.... I thought I recognized that ghost from the AtmosFX collection. I have that and the Christmas collection.
It was PERFECT for this project. Not only a bride but really well produced. We're big Halloween people and rear projection really wows folks. AtmosFX does a nice job. All the best!
This is amazing! I really love how you his the player so well and was even super impressed by the curtain you made on the fly. I'm looking to building my own, but what app did you use for the ghost effect?
Love all your videos! Very informative. Thank you so much for sharing your craft with us!
The ghost is actually just a video from a company that does Haunted Halloween effects. The stuff they make is for doing rear projection for home haunted houses - www.atmosfx.com. Cool stuff and reasonable prices. All the best!
This is wonderful. I've been looking for some book nook inspiration, and I think a Peppers Ghost spooky House is just the ticket! Thanks for the great and informative video!
To provide a little creative inspiration is the absolute best I could hope for! Thank you for your encouraging words and happy nooking!
Love it 👏
Thanks for the feedback!
That was really cool I live in Ocala Florida and that is my favorite ride thank you
I grey up in California so I'm more of a "land" person but The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean are our two solid favorites. We never get tired of riding them when we get a chance to get back to the park. Thanks for the comments and all the best!
so awesome! Love it! =D
Thanks! I appreciate it. The Haunted Mansion is a favorite so lots of inspiration. All the best!
This is a really inspirational build. I’m following a similar route with my own book nook. I’m struggling however to find the miniature parts here in the UK. I cannot find any doors, picture frames or the grandfather clock. Any suggestions for a builder over the pond???
It's tough. I actually 3D printed most of the actual pieces. The walls and other bits are easily put together from balsa or even heavy card stock. The models were all free on Thingiverse. Could you track down a local maker or club that has a 3D printer? They could maybe run some models for you. It's like having a friend with a truck when you need to move :)! 3D printers are also coming way down in price if this is the kind of thing you're doing a lot. Another option is scratch building things from balsa. Doll house makers used to do a lot of scratch building from strips and sheets. I also occasionally use polymer clay like SuperSculpy to create little bits and pieces-easy to work with and it's oven baked. For the doors, you could do a lot of the construction with layered sheets for the details and strips of different sizes for the framing? I still go back to seeing if you can find someone with a 3D printer that could help you out. Hope that helps! Best of luck with your project!
incroyable, j'adore !!
Merci! I appreciate it! Cheers!
Yes! Pirates of the Caribbean and Now This!!! (I know the skull wasn't really meant to be Pirates of the Caribbean but still!!) Please do more Disney type stuff soon! Maybe an animatronic?? I think you could do a really good job on that!!! I have a tutorial on my channel about that!! NICE WORK!!!
-Ava
Thanks! Ya never know what random project will pop into my head. I do want to do more book nooks so I may look for other Disney inspirations and think about incorporating some animatronics!
wow.
Thank you. I appreciate that. I have some ideas on more ways to incorporate video that can be a bit more “always on”. Right now… the player needs to be recharged regularly so I can’t just leave it playing constantly. I have the bits and pieces… just need to noodle a theme! Cheers!
I'm in the process of making this 'Nook' and have had to play about with the ghost video. I couldn't get the video to play upside down on my Timmkoo .... so dropped it into a video editing program and flipped the video, re saved it, uploaded the new version and BOOM ... the ghost is now the right way up when the Timmkoo is upside down. (Which it needs to be to get the charge port facing upwards) So issue solved. Just putting this in here in case it helps others if they are having ghost issues :-)
This is a fantastic project, Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks for adding that small but important detail! There’s also the added advantage of being able to use the cord to fish the player outta the nook. Happy to hear you’re having fun with this one. Cheers!
AMAZING! Found this video again! 100% going to make this. I assume you don't have any plans/layout/dimensions of the actual nook? Thank you so much for all the resources though. Mega helpful, especially the list of thingyverse haunted items! Thank you so much! LOVE Haunted Mansion. EDIT: Forget what I said - you're telling us the dimensions in the video - I'll shut up and follow!
Have fun with your project! The size is a bit arbitrary. This one is a bit deeper because so much is going on. It could be a tad bit wider if needed. All the best!
Incredible !! Really enjoyed watching this ! May I ask how you were able to produce the wall paper ? Was it printed on regular paper then mount to card ?
Thank you! I really appreciate that. Yes... the wallpaper is just printed using an inkjet printer on some matte photo paper. I realized that it really didn't need to be that thick and just some reasonably heavyweight printer paper would work fine. If you cut it into strips it looks more like real wallpaper. A little wrinkle here and there adds to the charm. I also gave it a quick seal with some matte varnish.
I love this :)
Thank you! I appreciate that. Now I just have to get off of my rear and get another project out!
great job ;]
Thank you! It's created some great discussions with people around using video in dioramas. All the best!
I want one!!!
Sorry for the late reply... life is a little outta hand! I'm glad you liked the vid. I wish there was a way to make things like this available. There's so much time and fiddly work that goes into it, by the time I'm done with one, I'm ready to do something completely different! You may just need to start making book nooks!! Thanks for the comment and all the best!
It's nice to see that I'm not the only hardcore mansion fan here. That is an awesome book nook. What type of paint did you use for the doors?
Mansion and Pirates... marquee rides to be sure! The doors are printed on my Elegoo Mars resin printer and then painted and dry brushed with regular ol' craft paints. I did do a wash with Liquitex burnt umber and ivory black acrylic inks to sink into the nooks and crannies.
👌👌👌
Thanks! Just heading home from a family trip to the park with a head full of ideas. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Amazing!!
Thank you! I kinda lucked out on this one so it's all downhill from here 😁!
You peaked too soon! 😃😃curse that darned excellent box I made because everything from now on will be a mere shadow of this wonder, as someone who loves to draw and design, purely for my own fun I understand this psychological dilemma! 😆😆
I probably should just roll out some lame projects just to reset expectations!
@@RandomMakingEncounters I get you!
Amazing, just beautiful.
Sadly u lost me at the electronics and 3d downloads etc.
Don't have access to nearly all your supplies unfortunately.
This was way beyond my ability but still dream about making something like this. Thanku so much..
I'm fortunate to have collected a bunch of tools over the years. One of the great things about nooks is you really don't need a lot to make one. I've seen some really amazing nooks that use scrap cereal box cardboard, popsicle sticks, craft paint, and fairy lights. I always "cheat" on my projects. I scratch build only what I can't find! If you have an idea for a nook, start small, keep it simple, don't be hard on yourself, and give it a whirl. Then, do another one... and another. Every project will get better and you'll continue to challenge yourself. The only person that you need to make happy is you. All the best!
@@RandomMakingEncounters Thanku so much and yes so true about scrounging around haha, my god some of the things I've used over the years.
Your right of course, we always want it perfect but the first or second time ate usually a bit rough or complete failures haha. Arty types are hard on themselves and im no different 🤔
Thanku for your reply and kind words, im not giving up and u don't get to my age without a few tricks up the ol sleeve 🤣
Cheers Kaz x
Amazing effect.
What is the model of the player? Or just an old phone?
Greetings from Munich, Tom.
Greetings back!! Thank you for watching. The video player is a Tiimmkoo MP3 player. It’s better described as a multimedia player because it handles video and audio. It’s fantastic for this application because the screen has a narrow bezel, is really good resolution, and is incredibly affordable. I can imagine all kinds of applications for prop making and other projects requiring compact, looping video. It’s also touch screen! I have a review of the player floating around on my channel. They are around $50 US which I think is a good deal for what you get. All the best!!
Hey there! This is amazing! What type of player did you use? Tim Coo? I can't find it anywhere? Thanks for sharing!
Here's the link to the player I used - www.amazon.com/TIMMKOO-Bluetooth-TouchScreen-Portable-Recorder/dp/B07X8V9B8J There's a bluetooth and non-bluetooth version... I used the cheapest. There are some others out there on the market as well but this one has pretty decent resolution and screen size. There are a lot of possibilities for easy embedded videos. Thanks for watching!!
Great video! We like how you described your material and methodology with each step, but we did have a question. What did you use to create the carpet and wallpaper? Was it a Photoshop image printed with a color laser printer on thick paper? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching and reaching out! The wallpaper is just an inkjet print on matte photo paper. I realized a little too late that I probably should have uses slightly thinner paper and cut it into strips like real wallpaper-it was a little toooooo flat. For the rug, I found an image of a carpet runner in a style that seemed to fit. It's printed on an inkjet printer and then glued to a bit heavier stock to give it a little thickness. If your printer can handle thicker stock, you could just run it through onto a card stock. I did stipple on some clear gel medium to give the rug a bit of texture to bread up the smoothness. Hope all of that helps!
@@RandomMakingEncounters That's very helpful. Thanks!
We love your channel. My daughter and I want to try and tackle this project. The main thing that we can’t figure out is the electronics. We want ours to be powered by ac adapter and not a battery pack. Is this possible? We couldn’t find any videos on how to do this. Do you plan on putting a video on how you did the electronics?
It is possible indeed! I have a few videos ready to go live that talk about the NeoPixels and the basic connections for an AC adapter. There are also a couple of ways to tackle the electronics and I have a couple of things in the works. I also have sample Arduino code that is available at this link - github.com/randommakingencounters/neo-nano/blob/main/neo-nano-basic
What's missing is a video that walks through the wholistic approach and that I think would be really helpful for people. I think that's next on the list!
I very much enjoyed this video, quite inspiring. Did print your part on filament or a resin printer?
All of the parts were printed on a resin printer. The parts are pretty small. I think the little statue on the table is a little over half an inch tall. I find that filament printers are good for larger designs where strength is also important. Resin is great for small detailed objects. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
impressive
Thanks! I appreciate it. I have some ideas on how to get away from using the weird MP4 player so the Pepper's Ghost effect can basically be on all of the time. I appreciate the comment and wish you the very best!
@@RandomMakingEncounters Cool. Good luck perfecting the booknook!
Thanks thinnest i could get here in the uk is 0.5 mm (0.019") so got some of that on order thanks, Electrics next, I see you have a capacitor on the board, which one is it please, sorry for so many questions, but your work is so cool.
No worries on the questions. There may be a slight delay in replies... for better or worse, this isn't my day job soe the needs of the day vary considerably. Have fun!
This is so cool. I thought it was an actual room, not a miniature! Either way, it's fantastic.
High praise! Thank you! I think that's a good sign if it all feels right. I think the main trick is to get the scale of things right. It's not always the amount of detail but getting things to feel like they all live in the same world. All the best!
Fantastic work. what brand of mp4 player did you use?
I used the Timmkoo. I have a quick video on my channel. There are a few out there but this one had a good screen size, the bezel around the frame was really narrow, the price wasn't terrible and the video playback has a loop setting. For the price, I was pretty impressed. If I were to do something with video again, I think I'll dig more into Raspberry Pi. The player approach is great because it's really, really easy... no wiring... no muss. The main downside is it isn't a continuous running kinda thing. Pi with a small screen seems like it may be a more permanent solution. Thanks for the feedback and I hope that helps!
Also, where do you get your polystyrene? Is that pipe fitter glue, like for landscaping and is thingieverse a thing or slang for Etsy?
Here's a link to an assortment pack of polystyrene - amzn.to/3SRF0dq
Pipe fitter glue is a little thick for this application and designed to be used with PVC. To build with sheet styrene, a thin glue that you can run along the seams works well. Here's a link to what I use - amzn.to/3f7L43H
Thingiverse is a site to download free files for 3D printing. I've posted the files I used for this project in a collection so you don't have to dig around for them. Links in the description.
All the best with your project!
Very cool but you skipped right over the most intriguing part - putting the plexiglass in place!
That is the BEST part because it means it's DONE! Thanks for watching. I'll be sure to include that final step in the next video.
👏👏👍
😊😊😊thanks!
ah, that answered my question, how do you activate the player.. just run it all the time. Im thinking an old cell phone would work for this too. I have several of those, although some have a small screen, lol.
The sad truth is I only run it when occasionally. It's possible to plug the player in and loop it constantly but it's not the most elegant solution. The player slides into the nook from the top and I just hit play and drop it in. Since it's also touch screen, I also end up turning it off as I put it in the nook LOL! An old cell phone is an option as well.
One thing I've been sorting out is using a Raspberry Pi and LCD screen. There are some tutorials out there showing how to create a looping video player with a Pi that I've been able to replicate. It starts to get a little spendy but it would be a solution that could be left on continuously. I'm not a Pi guy but I'm good at following directions... sorta... so I'm noodling what I want to build around the idea. Being a bit of a Disney person... I feel like I need to do something Pirates soon but video might be better suited to something a bit more Star Wars Galaxy's Edge-like.
All the best!
@@RandomMakingEncounters watched again, i couldnt have her in my home...
Great Quality. Does the phone over heat?
Thank you! That's an interesting question... it can get warm. The player is a reasonably inexpensive MP4 player so it's designed to play full length movies. In theory, it shouldn't overheat with extended use. Since it powered by battery, I tend to not run it continuously. I've been noodling a solution that uses an LED screen and Raspberry Pi so it can be on all of the time. If I did that, I would probably also consider a fan to cool the Pi. Cheers!
Can't work out how your getting the image to show, are you bouncing it off the mirror then onto the acrylic, could you show the set up please, love your work.
Sure thing! I had the thought to do a Haunted Nook Pepper's Ghost Deconstructed video but one thing pushed another out. Thanks for asking and I'll get that recorded and posted. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching. Cheers!
@@RandomMakingEncounters Thanks your work is outstanding, i got the small player you recommended and the ghost lol. got to read up on how you get it to play remotely if possible..
At the start I thought the ghost is just edited in the video. Wow, this is seriously incredible.
Thanks! It all finally kinda came together to work out. I’ll be honest… it doesn’t always! Thanks for the kind words. All the best!
I have a question. How do you get the ghost replay on the mp4 player? I am really new to this…
The player that I used (Timmkoo) has a looping feature on the video player. It's a bit like song looping on your music app. Deep down... gonna be honest... the Timmkoo player worked really well but it makes me a little crazy to have to have something that needs to be recharged. I have some ideas on how to use a Raspberry Pi and an LED screen that I'm working on. It sounds more complicated than it is and I hope to do a video about that soon. The nice thing about that is it can be built right into the nook and will be powered like the rest of the lighting. Welcome to the world of making little worlds in boxes! Figuring it all out is half the fun!! All the best.
I should also point out, that if you're confused, as I was, about what LED's to use in this project, head over to @RandomMakingEncounters super useful video on LED's (Video called: Boss RGBW LED Lighting - NeoPixels and Microcontrollers) which explains the types, and also goes into more detail on the lighting side of this particular Book Nook. Thanks for the shout out. I managed to break my site with my amazing web skillz but think I have it sorted now! Cheers!
Is this possible for a beginner to do? And what kind of a player is this that you use? Is it a TIMMKOO? I would like to out so,e thing in there that you can use long term.
The most complex thing in this project is getting the ghost illusion to work. I've never really loved using the player for video since it can't really be left running all of the time and it's a bit fiddly. I have a better idea for a solution that can run all of the time and just got all of the parts in. I'm going to put together another video showing how to do it. I think it's simpler in some ways. As far as the rest goes... everything else is really pretty standard nook stuff. It's either a matter of making or finding all the little bits and pieces but everything I used can be found online or on Thingiverse. There are a million different ways you can get similar effects and it certainly doesn't need to be as complicated as what I've made to still be a cool nook. I'll let ya know when that video drops! All the best!
Hi. I am making your amazing book nook and for the life of me I cannot figure out where that plexi-glass piece fits in. I know you made the wall and the curtain to cover the edge. Does it go in front of the mirror? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Here's a link to a video I did that deconstructs the nook - czcams.com/video/fU00wCL2pKY/video.html
The effect you're going after is called Pepper's Ghost. The main idea is to have something off to the side that is brightly lit or, in this case, a video with a very dark background. The thing that is hidden is at a roughly 45 degree angle to a think transparent material that will reflect some of the image but also let you see through to objects behind it. To get the effect to work well, the objects behind the clear material should be well lit to help draw the eye to the background and make the reflected image or object look transparent. Disney uses this illusion quite a bit in rides like the Haunted Mansion and Pinocchio with the Blue Fairy at the end. It's a cool effect but hiding all the stuff in a little nook was the tricky bit.
I hope that other video helps a bit. All the best on your project!
