- While Hollywood’s trend of rebooting and revitalizing older franchises comes with mixed results, one film on the horizon that has many folks excited is Independence Day: Resurgence. Director Roland Emmerich reunited nearly the entire cast from the 1996 original for this follow-up, which takes place 20 years after the first invasion and sees the aliens coming back to Earth in full force.
20th Century Fox recently debuted some new footage from the movie at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and Collider’s own Steve Weintraub was onhand and able to sit down with Resurgence stars Jeff Goldblum and Brett Spiner for a lively interview. Topics ranged from Mexican restaurants to Goldblum’s jazz band, but the two also spoke enthusiastically about Resurgence and Emmerich’s work on the film, recounting a time when Emmerich reshot an entire day’s worth of scenes so he could get it exactly right.
The conversation also touched on a pair of upcoming projects, with Goldblum speaking briefly about his voice work in Wes Anderson’s new stop-motion animated film and Spiner giving his thoughts on the upcoming Star Trek TV series coming to CBS. Check out the time index below for a rundown of topics, and watch the interview above.
Jeff Goldblum and Brent Spiner:
:02 - They begin by talking about a restaurant called Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks.
1:30 - How Roland Emmerich is the Hitchcock or Orson Welles of the disaster genre.
2:20 - Jeff Goldblum stumps Brett Spiner with Talladega Nights
3:00 - What can audiences expect from Independence Day: Resurgence? Tease the tension and effects.
4:40 - Most memorable moments from filming.
5:27 - Goldblum says Emmerich was incredibly driven on set and passionate about getting this movie right.
6:18 - Goldblum talks about reuniting with Wes Anderson for his stop-motion animated film.
6:59 - Spiner’s thoughts on the new Star Trek TV show.
7:50 - Goldblum and Spiner talk about Steve’s interview skills and Goldblum tells Steve to come see his jazz band.

Dude, I could listen to these guys have a conversation all day, about ANYTHING!
Mr. Data and Dr. Malcolm... cannot get any better! :D
+Consona Adversa Pars That's Lt.Cdr. Data to you! :P
They should talk Chaos Theory some time...
He looks more like the old Noonien Soong guy than the android. Geez he got old and so did Goldblum.
let's see how good you look in 30 yrs..................
Let's see. I'm sure I will look 30 times better.
To me the sound of Brent Spiner and Jeff Goldblum, two iconic actors, truly enjoying their collider interview experience just gives me so much pride in following/enjoying your(collider) content as one who is outside of the Hollywood business. Seriously Enjoy your content! Instigating intellectual conversations while having knowledge of the movie making process and community. So dope
Love Brent Spiner
Look at him there, Jeff Goldblum being all Jeff Goldblumy, love it
If only all celeb interviews could be this good
God I love Jeff Goldblum. I just want to have a conversation with him for a whole day and make him my new uncle.
Brent Spiner played Mr. Data, a much loved character from one of my favourite TV series of all time. Jeff Goldblum played my favourite character in one of my favourite movies of all time (Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park). Both talking about a sequel to another of my favourite movies of all time. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN!!!!
Love these two!
Jeff Goldblum wouldn't be Jeff Goldblum if Jeff Goldblum wasn't Jeff Goldblum....
+Oliver Gonzalez Stiller (OGS) you blew my mind
perfectly stated lol
Holy shit... what a mind fuck.
One of the most comfortable and humble interviews I ever heard...great job!
This is a great interview. Really good! Love how chilled out Brent is with Jeff's nerdiness and how the guy asked some decent questions and got some cool responses about the filmmaking process!
Jeff Goldblum, my number one pick for "which celebrity you would like to converse with?"
Data knows everything. Including porn stars that frequent a specific restaurant lol. I am programmed in multiple techniques.
You are not wrong.
Actually your wrong , it's really Data's evil twin brother Lore
I haven't seen these guys since the first Independence movie. Seeing these guys looking so much older just made me realise I am getting old.
I don't actually think I could love The Goldblum more. What a man.
A Jeff Goldblum vulcan would be awesome
This makes me want to see more of these two working together, either in this movie, or in future projects.
That charm and fun they were having is literally the best advertisement they could have done for ID2 to put me in the seat on opening night of this movie.
I really didn't have any interest in watching this movie until I watch this clip. Thank you for posting.
i love the casual setting interview. great interview.
Jeff Goldblum is being so wonderfully sarcastic about that crap movie and that interviewer doesn't even seem to notice.
OMG those two together you could never get anything done. XD
It's almost like a Tim and Eric sketch.
That was one of the coolest interview I have ever watch. Thanks for doing such a great interview and job.
Jeff is so nice and respectful in this...shows what a pro he is
I.D 2 will crush all before it this summer...
Yet another great interview. Frosty has a knack of getting these personal insights into the stars. Well done!
That was one of the best interviews I have ever seen.
Its good old um um G-Goldblum and his great GREAT uh uh Goldblum-isms.
I totally read that in his voice.
Oh my god I'm typing this with his voice stuck in ahh my head, in my head thats' that's chaos theory.
when the interview stared I got a picture in my head of Mr. Data watching porn.
the fly, ever since that film I saw some awesome talent from goldblum. That dude should have been guest starring on star trek, star wars, babylon 5...
Interesting that they gave Emmerich that much leeway for reshoots and final cut. Studios clearly must trust him to deliver.
Wait, there's going to be another Wes Anderson stopmotion film?! EXCITED.
I love that they're all friendly with each other, have fun hanging out with Jeff Goldblum's jazz band and board games! :D
Totally nailed that interview man- great work!
my sarcasm meter is off the chart with these guys especisally Brent Spiner ,:P
God must be happy when he created goldblume such a magical ultra unique guy. His mannerisms are mesmerising.....
DUDE, he's got a Voltron shirt on!
What a fun interview! The movie was actually cool, didn't care for the 1st one much but this was better. Note: Goldblum should totally play a "Q".
Alright. Going to show my age now. I actually watched "Ten Speed and Brown Shoe" when Goldblum was probably younger than all you reading this.
The eye goes to Goldblum.
These two fine actors deserved much better than what ID2 ended up being. I'll admit the ending had a lot of potential but oh well.
Great interview! Thanks Frosty!
man, russ is one of the best characters in any movie. jeff is one of the best actors ever
these two could happily talk all day there awesome
I love Jeff Goldblum so much.
Two very funny and talanted actors ! :o)
Fantastic interview! Talk about "nailing" it!
Data practicing his small talk with Dr. Malcolm... It boggles the mind...
Brent Spiner and Jeff Goldblum...together...wow
I love how Jeff Goldblum can just keep talking in one continuous sentence. he can just keep talking a d talking! it's pretty funny
Brent was thrilled to finally meet Stone Cold Steve Austin.
"Into the Night", a 1984 movie starring Jeff Goldblum, is one of my favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, please do so. Be prepared to laugh.... a lot.
Jeff Goldblum is turning into evil Spock.
Which weekly Star Trek series were they discussing at the end of the video?
one of the best frosty's interviews
Best interview ever.
I love these guys, great interview Frosty.
Thanks for puking on the donut, Brundlefly.....scarred for life now.
Dam what an interview and great video!
Of course Jeff Goldblum has a jazz band.
Can't freaking wait for this film
Jeff Goldblum is actually a parody of himself... What a guy!!!
THEYRE GONNA BE IN INDEPENDENCE DAY 3!!!!!!
When is Independence Day 3 coming
Awesome stuff all around. Enjoyable
That's not Data , it's his evil twin brother Lore
Goldblum with the troll, and Spiner with the nail burn.
Frosty is phenomenal.
Brent Spiner's character in the first Independence Day, Dr. Okun, appeared to have been killed by an alien.
Loved Jeff Goldblum in The Fly, and Powder and of course Independance Day. I also heard Brent mention JJ Abrams was on board for the new Star Trek tv show so I won't be watching that now. Thanks CBS.
Awesome interview you got a sub
He is the Renroit of that genRRRRRRRRRe.
I can't go on...but there's still 6 minutes to go of the video so I must. xD
That was beautiful!
I really like the Brundlefly!
Awesome video!
i loved this... fucking awesome, nice work frosty
A very professional - polite way of saying that Rolland is an asshole for not catching a bad set BEFORE making everybody work for seventeen hours.
Haha what a power couple
i wonder what would be like if data was on ds9 instead of worf
So for 20 years I've incorrectly assumed that Brent Spiner's character was dead!
+Chris Jones A lot of people are saying that his character went into a coma. Or he might just only appear on some videos uncovered from Area 51.
I'm hoping more for the first scenario, because he's such a great character and should give us some more laughs! :)
+Chris Jones Actually he was deader.
I'm so sorry, I'll show myself out...
oh lucky guy !!
Do the Vega
Have the Aliens upgraded their AV software ?
Jeff is so fine
Soon Goldblum can play a prophet from the Old Testament :-)
Next gen you played a robot... Do you feel typecast?
so data saves the day? or is it lore. i never know who is who.
Goldblum really took offense to being touched on the shoulder.
I fell like i should be asking for some Grey Poupon.
Jeff Goldblum must love leather jackets
Love both of then, but ID2 was easily the worst film of the last 30 years. Probably since The Fly 2.
The entire cast without Will Smith.
Poor Goldblum....they keep skipping over him. Can barely get a word in!
How do you qualify the claim that many folks are excited about this film? Is that like Oscar buzz or trending? Throw away comments that mean nothing. Will Smith declined. He was the biggest name in the first film. Randy Quaid? Pretty big name. Not back.
New Trek series, don't let JJ Abrams anywhere near it.
Independence Day Resurgence
Godzilla Resurgence
whats next^^
+Ben_ Slashes "Resurgence: Resurgence?"
+Ben_ Slashes I want a crossover
+Living Punching Bag Roland Emmerich could make the Crossover .... Oh Wait no. Then 1998 zilla would Show up.
jeff goldblum look so old.
Trump said if elected president ,he would cut the TV show !
1st comment 2nd like
Wow! Who cares , these two are the only reason I saw the movie. Script was toxic , story line was vomit. "David" was right , "We're not ready"
This interviewer are just not getting better. Buck up or give the job to someone else.
