Dorian Gray was described as a very youthful and innocent looking man. Literally 2 seconds in his first encounter he was described as a hair full of golden locks and rosy cheeks. I don’t know why the movies always make him so dark lol

Probably because the standard of beauty has changed? Ben Barnes by modern conventions is very handsome, though he has darker and more “thoughtful” features (if that makes sense).
He also looks more like a villain visually here, which goes against the innocent face and blonde locks. It’s a classic trope in film and literature, the fair are the innocent, the heroes, the beautiful, while the darker complected (even if it’s just hair or eye color) are the villains or outcasts. Wilde was probably playing against this expectation when he wrote the book since it’s the blonde angel whose really the demented soul. Another example of going against type is Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130 in which the mistress is described as the speaker’s love though she goes against all conventional beauty standards of the time. Same with Jane Eyre, Rochester is dark and brooding in features and demeanor while St John is blonde locked yet Jane, the “poor and obscure, plain and little”, goes to the dark brooder who knows the complexities of her soul.
Damn, I wrote an essay. Anyhoo, looks are deceiving, Wilde was a wizard, and this movie is playing into old tropes or the casting director just thought Ben Barnes was hot. . . . . . . I can’t say I disagree.

I started this thing at work a couple of years ago, where I had come up with famous actors that looked like my co-workers. When it came to myself I couldn't think of anyone, so I used an app that finds an actor or actress that looks like you. People always talked badly about this movie, but after going back and reading, I think it was a great portrayal. They take lines right out of the text quite often, and despite him looking different, he plays the gentle personality very well in the beginning, and the troubled one later. I don't mind the added snazz in this.

This novel is just as perfect as oneself would think of himself. It's like as Oscar Wilde Said, the three men that reflects me "Basil is what you think of yourself as an artist, Henry is what the world sees you, & Dorian is what you want to be young youthful sexy and handsome".
This just leads me to a point to wonder "It's ok that we are mortals, but why do we have to age!? why do we have to grow old and can barely walk, think, & talk? Why can't we stay young and beautiful all the way till we die"? i wish i could find an answer. The purpose of us growing old is so that it's easier for us to accept death. There is less we can do on the earth. We can't enjoy a lot of the things that young or younger people can. There is less to hold our interest.

I just watched the movie Ben is an one brilliant actor to be honest , the way he played the innocent then the wicked role besides his looks so young and fresh naturally which fit the person in the portrait and the character over all the director did an awesome job picking him he is in whole different level ..

I don't know if you've watched it yet but if you haven't, I'd advise you to lower your expectations as although the actin is brilliant the script is nothing like the book unfortunately. A lot of the important lessons in the book are lost.

Ben Barnes is literally perfect!! And he's definitely the best fancast of Sirius Black!! I JUST LOVE HIM- eeeh okay, imma watch the movie but first I want to read the book hehe :)) (also the marauders are the best and yes I stan them too much- )
two of my exes have that same complexion, it's the contrast between the dark hair & the pale skin that makes it striking. you can get the same effect with dark blonde hair only if the skin is extremely light. that's why saturation matters so much, but who has time to explain this. if i say it once, that should be enough.

im going to comment even though this is a super old post. Dorian Gray, I read the book and the movie is excellent. The painting of Dorain Gray at the Chicago Art institute- painted by Chicagos very own Ivan Albright is my favorite painting of all time. It is so full of detail and absolutely amazing!!! I could stare at it all day. Check it out if you are ever in Chicago!!
When I read the book I've always imagined Matt Bomer as Dorian Gray. I couldn't think of any actor more beautiful and more captivating than him.

Madkatz Productionz i have to disagree about the hair thing! dorian is supposed to seem pure and innocent and youthful even though on the inside hes becoming corrupted and golden blonde hair is associated with those traits so i believe its important. also i just believe wilde is the type of writer that describes things as a certain way for a good reason
even if he did see his real self in the mirror for a second, I feel like that's a brilliant movie adaptation. it could show how dorian's knowledge of the painting altering, affects the things he does in his life. knowing that his soul is deteriorating so much on the inside, is affecting the way he looks at himself despite him still being young and beautiful to everyone else.

Everyone is talking either about that he doesn’t match the description of the character in the book, or that he’s from Harry Potter. For me I think he looks quite a lot like the actor who played Dorian in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Which came out 6 years before this.
