Instant breakfast! The real recipe for Scottish potato scones (Tattie Scones)

- If you're new to potato scones, you definitely have to try! It is so good ! Often also called "Tattie scone - Tottie scone" in Scotland). A delicious Scottish recipe served for breakfast with fried eggs, sausages and bacon etc. But they can also be consumed in a sweet way with jam and a delicious, hot cup of tea! Here is the real recipe that was made more than a century ago with whole milk. Today whole milk has been replaced by butter. Just as good. You have to eat them hot! Ps: in the recipe I show you two different cooking methods (it's up to you to choose the one that suits you). Good tasting !
♥ Subtitles are available, enable them on the video.
Ingredients :
500g cooked potatoes (3 medium sized)
60 ml of milk (1/4 cup)
60g flour (¼ cup)
60g flour (1/4 cup)
Salt
Butter
Just made these…fantastic! Taste better than store bought and really soft! Thanks
Glad you like them! Thank you ♥
In Scotland we often eat them in a roll with a square sausage and an egg...blooming lovely!
Is that served with fried sugar cubes and a hunk of chocolate covered, deep fried bacon?
You’re the first person I’ve come across who prefers that specific combination in a roll.
I would have thought that square slice and fried egg, in particular, would be mutually exclusive breakfast items (as far as putting them on a roll, goes, anyway)?
Personally, I prefer my tattie scones (homemade or otherwise) on a plate with bacon, a poached egg, mushrooms, and tomato.
Braw
@@kirsteneasdale5707 stick a slice of haggis on that plate and you have a breakfast fit for gods😊
@@kirsteneasdale5707 No the roll thing tastes great. You need a runny yolk on the egg though. Messy to eat but tastes delicious especially on a home made "Glesca" roll
@@kirsteneasdale5707 very popular in Glasgow placing in a roll.🙂
Thank you for taking me back to my childhood in Scotland. Spent the first 9 years of my life there before we moved to California. I'm going to make these in honor of my Mom and Dad. ♥♥♥
I'm so happy for you ♥ Thank you !
I too spent the first 8 years in Scotland then moved to Canada. I will be making these potato scones in a "wee while'.
In Northern Ireland this is dometimes called , fadge. It is just plain boiled potatoes mashed while warm knead in enough flour till it becomes sticky then enough flour till it stops being sticky and z good shake of salt. "Recipe" from an elderly lady I knew.
Its called potato bread in Belfast.
Lovely 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
Irish potato cakes fried, with a fried egg on top. Yummy sometimes called Farls
I love potato farls - prior to going vegan I use to cook them with my bacon 🤤
I love the sound of the birds chirping in the background
l was taught that you dry fry them, and then after that fry them into some bacon fat, l make these all of the time usually big batches (5-10 lbs of potato's done up)
and after dry frying them l let them cool and put X amount into baggies and freeze them and take them out when we want them. yum. Also my grandpa told us the thicker they were the richer one was back in the day. Still enjoy them till this day.
I like the taste of bacon, good idea, i'll try it, thanks!
That's better: potatoes, flour and butter together aren't the right ingredients to be on diet
Wow ! Didn’t know this was a Scots recipe. My mother made them, pasted in patties and fried (of course South, always fried) crispy brown. From left over mashed potatoes. Served with pinto beans for supper. I still make them sometimes and add green onion to them. Thanks for more history !
My pleasure ♥ I will have to try with green onions, thank you ♥
Yep,😋
We fry them in Scotland too.
@@UnjourUnerecettekatyseats I make them too, with shredded cheese and herbs like dill, chives or parsley. Thanks for sharing.
Potato pan cakes in the southern USA using left over mashed potatoes where some add an egg, green onions and some sour cream and is common to all potato growing countries. They originated in the eastern European countries of Germany Austria, Russia and Poland as a peasant food.
This recipe will make a nice addition to my meatless meals day. I can't wait to make them. I think I'll top mine with cheese and jalapeños. I bet these would be a great replacement for cornbread. I'm also thinking about topping them with smoked salmon and cream fresh and a little fresh dill. Yummy. My mind is reeling with the way I can use them. Thank you so much for sharing.
They look delish and easy to make.
Usually cooked for breakfast with bacon eggs etc often fried in a pan in butter
We have the same potato bread/pancake in Ireland plus another one made in the Rep of Ireland called Boxty made with grated potato, flour, baking soda, and buttermilk. An old Irish rhyme goes: 'Boxty on the griddle, boxty on the pan; if you can't make boxty, you'll never get a man'. I like both versions
Nice to see a scottish recpie :P They look delicious! I make mine with the cheese in the inside like a cheesebomb perfect with bacon to cure a hangover
I actually baked it with a hemp milk and arrowhead wheat for the sake of keeping it gluten and dairy free. It came out cheesy and yummy!
So yummy !
Looks so good I will definetely try this. Thank you
Looks super easy and yummy! Thank you for posting!
These are also good with warm maple syrup
They are like a Scottish version of lefsa! Except lefsa is much much thinner and cooked on a special grill. I will definitely try these :)
Super tasty Scottish potatoe cakes....I grated some cheese into mine, absolutely yummy. Thank you Chef...🤪❤️👍

In NIreland it’s Part of a traditional UlsterFry breakfast we fry then in bacon fat or toast them for a healthier option 🥰

Assomiglia alla piadina romagnola! Ma senza patate... Ricetta super interessante! Merci beaucoup! 😊

I'm having hard time keepng up with you lol but still love all your videos 💖
Merci
Love those thank you.
Hmm. In Germany you have Latkes. Potato pancakes. They are often served with applesauce on top. I could see that as a good topping for tattie scones.
Danke 😋😘
Proper potato scones made this way are delicious. Shop bought versions are usually very poor by comparison
I totally agree!
Well, is there any prepared food, that can compare with fresh made food ? This statement is kind of universal.
I have porridge for breakfast but i looks good.
super !
Thanks for recipe madame 🤌🏻
Looks delicious..👍😉 There's one thing I cant understand about ALL reciepes..🤔 ...Video says subtitles..a pinch of salt ...then when you watch the video ...4 pinches are added??? This is just an example of many videos Ive seen I love to try out the recipes and sometimes mine is a flop..🙁...espcially when you make the ones where you have to let dough rise...they forget to mention how long you must kneed the dough..🤔
We call it potato bread in Ireland 🥰👍
Looks good like 👍👌👌🥰
Hmmmmmmmmmmm…..Merci
Can I swap the milk and butter for non dairy ones? (Vegan)
Super! Thank you !!!
Best wishes from germany.....
Many thanks! ♥
Dziękuję za doskonały przepis Pozdrawiam serdecznie.
Interesting. The same 'dough' cut into small bites and boiled and you have Italian Gnocchi.

Just like my great gram used to make.
Tipo gnocchi in padella ! Proverò grazie!

i used cornflour, so much better than plain flour 👍 more crunch
In Wales I have them, call them potato cakes
I usually dry fry the tattie scones first, to cook them. Then fry the bacon, and finally fry the tattie scones, again, in the bacon fat (while the eggs are cooking).
Mom did this with leftover mashed potatoes and pan fried. Sometimes also added shredded cheese. Makes since because my dna is 48% Scottish. I thought it was just something her mom taught her to stretch leftover potatoes as they had a very large family.
Interesting take on the recipe, bearing in mind most families cooked their porridge at the start of the week-poured it into a receptacle like a lined drawer and had it sliced cold daily as they cld'nt afford the coal.
More likely margarine after 1900 for frying if there was no other fat.
