  • This car had been stood unused too long and the fuel pump had seized and stopped working showing 15M ohms resistance, I worked out an easy trick of getting it freed off and working again without removing it.

Legend. I joined 2 car batteries to make 24 volts, kept swapping terminals to forward and reverse the pump. Now fuel pump works perfect on the mr2.

cant this burn the pump ?

@@miltiadhsmporas5051 No because you are just pulsing the pump back and forth giving it a punch. The car batteries are high amp which is also needed. I have a 1990 manual turbo and the pump wouldnt budge with 12 volts, but 24 volts woeked perfect.

@@kevinmccracken9959 is the fuel pump even getting the full 12 volts when switching on ignition? there was an instance where I hooked up a fuel pump directly to a 12v battery and it unseized. That would lead me to believe there's less voltage(or amps) when normally attempting to start the vehicle
did you try with 12v first?
did it last? is it still working?

@@wazup3333I tried straight 12 volts and didnt work so tried 24 volts. I could smell stale fuel and when the pump spun it squealed for a couple of seconds then ran perfect.

I have an 85 and my pump froze as well. Someone on you tube showed us to cross two terminals in the diagnostic plug by engine. After a couple of tries turning the engine over she burst into life. I was told this happened because it sat for a year with really low fuel.

Most likely batt or ig and fp, that would make the pump run full time and would bypass any relay issues. You shouldn't leave it like that as it won't be safe.
This was a different kind of fault

@@jdmjesus6103 Thanks, I took the cross over wires right out as soon as she started. Runs great as always. I make sure the tank is forty or fifty percent full. Where do you find pistons and rings, it should be rebuilt sometime. Thanks for the advice, have a merry Christmas.

@@spotty67 ah that's good then. Tbh, it's been a very long time since I bought pistons for a 4age and I can't even remember where they came from!
They were a very popular engine so I'd like to think parts are still available somewhere. Make sure you can get the valve shims before you start anything, they might be a tricky part to source and no doubt the head will need some work by now.

It's applicable to any car that's been stood too long really although I haven't had chance to try it again since. Hope it works for you!
