    Sometimes with galvanized metal you have to wipe it down with vinegar. The chemicals used in the galvanizing process are designed to resist paint. The vinegar helps with neutralizing these chemicals.

      Jami Ray Vintage this is a little off the subject of the project u just did but i wanted to say i dont leave the house much to shop for antiques but have been looking around on offer up and found myself an antique armoire and a huge dresser that i intend to use as a buffet in my foyer....also a console tables. So i will have three projects to try my hand with the chalk paint and see if i can use the knowlege u have shared with us to make somethin beautiful for our home....and as expected my huband is callin 2 pieces garbage cuz its too rustic and the dresser too beautiful to paint...lol...im determined to prove to him that i can do somethin great with these pieces. Thank u jami n zeb for ur videos and inspiration..we all love and appreciate unz for thst

    I did see people use Vaseline where they do not want paint to adhere and they just used regular paint but the paint can easily be rubbed off of the areas they want it to look chippy.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety

      It’s a great technique. I have a video of a dresser I did using that paint resist with the Vaseline. 👍❤️

  • @peggyhelmick8418
    @peggyhelmick8418 Před 6 lety

    My husband says metal has a finish on it and that is why your chippy paint didn't stick as well on your second one you did. He said you would need to go over it before painting with something like paint thinner or as I saw below maybe vinegar. It is on new metal to keep it from rusting and etc.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety

    Love all your videos, I watch them on my TV!! Did you ever do anything with embossed stencils, as a sign or on furniture? You can make paint thick with chalk powder or calcium carbonate ? I think that's what its called. Keep up the great work.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety

      I’ve used plaster of Paris and light weight spackle to build up stencils. Never done a video on it though. It’s been awhile. 👍

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety

      I’ve done it. But you’ll spend a lot of time waiting for the air compressor to catch up and build back up to pressure. -Zeb

    Will the milk paint make it rust?

  • @teganique2250
    @teganique2250 Před 5 lety

    Can you use DIY paint on metal? Would you still need that bond stuff?

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 5 lety

      You can use DIY paint on metal. If it’s super shiny you may want to scuff it up a little with 220 grit sand paper but it sticks really well. The extra bond is for milk paint to help it crackle and chip less.

  • @virginiadare02
    @virginiadare02 Před 6 lety

    I have a black organizer from Harbor Freight sort of like your galvanized ones. Will the milk paint stick to it just as it is or what should I do to prep. Hubby says paint will not stick. I'm a newbie and love your channel.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety +1

      The milk paint should stick. It sticks to just about everything. If it’s really shiny enamel you may want to buff it with some 220 grit sand paper, just to give the paint something to hold on to.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 4 lety

      This milk paint is safe and bio certified food safe. If you don’t want chipping at all I would sand the piece a little and use extra bond. The recommended amount of extra bond is 2 parts paint to 1 part bond. Here are the links if you need them.

    Could you use your air compressor to give them a light sandblast before painting? Just rough that surface up a little??? I don't know how air compressors work, so sorry if that's a dumb question. ;)

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 5 lety

      Not a dumb question. 😊
      The air itself isn’t high enough pressure to affect the metal but we have what’s called a soda blaster that runs off the air compressor and it works about like a sand blaster on a smaller scale. That would work.

    Zeb, do you have to clean the sprayer with the top coat every time you use it? Or how often ? Can you just keep the topcoat in the container and have it ready to use when needed or does it need to be disassembled every day!? Thanks!

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety

      I leave the sprayer full of top coat and store it like that so it doesn’t dry out and I clean it about every 4th time I refill it. Sometimes a small amount will dry around the tip of the nozzle and I have a little wire brush I use to clean that off.

  • @leosuniverse

    cool. How come you guys dont make those wood serving trays or those long boxes yourselves with your salvaged wood? You guys can do so much with what you have and can repeat certain items. One in particular I saw you guys get are those small items like the bird. I bought a molds on ebay and you can do lots of different birds or other things out of plaster or concrete. Then you can have a combo of things of one of a kind and some staple items that you dont need to always run out and search for. Should save some cost at the end of the day. Just a thought.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Před 6 lety +1

      Can only fit so much in to our day. 👍 the wood gets used up for signs and corbels and rolling pins and candlesticks. 😊
      In reality I probably only spend about 2-3 hours a week finding smalls while I’m out and about running other errands I pop into the thrift store for a few minutes and see what’s new.
