  • Hello There, welcome back to the channel, and to my coverage of the Doom franchise. Today we'll be diving into Doom II, the sequel to the beloved classic from 1993. I'll be going into whether it's a worthy sequel to the original and just giving my all around thoughts on what the game has to offer. Doom 3 is next, so look out for that, and in the meantime, enjoy the video!
PS: I am doing my best to make these videos entertaining and of the highest possible quality that they can be. If you have any feedback for me on what I can do better, I got both ears tuned in. I also hope that I can give you a laugh and make your day better, and as always, thank you very much for watching!

It's pretty crazy hearing a zoomer make a documentary about something I experience first hand. Is this what boomers feel like when they watch Vietnam documentaries?!
Anyway, you touch on an important point here: Doom was mail order, but Doom 2 was now in stores. It was made to cash in on Doom's success and be a literal sequel, as sequels back then were often "the same thing but more".
If you've not read 'Masters Of Doom' or 'Doom Guy: Life in First Person', you really should! You'll see that when Doom 2 was being made ID had gone wide and was licensing out the engine, so had to support that, at the same time as working on Doom 2. Hence why some of the level design is terrible. And because the team had been working on Doom they were now experienced in making levels for it, so they got quite "experimental" here started to do all of those puzzly levels instead of the "just shoot stuff" ones. You mentioned looking at the designers of each level -- you'll notice that Romero did the best levels in Doom 1 and 2. If you can be bothered, give SIGIL a go. But Romero was also in charge of all the bizdev stuff and ports, so Doom 2 lost his touch. [edit: and also he spent a huge number of working hours playing Doom online, much to Carmack's disapproval]
The Master Levels is another cash grab. ID basically downloaded every .wad they could find on usenet and then stuck it on a CD. There's a huge amount of dross on there.
Personally my favourite is Doom 1. I appreciate some of Doom 2's levels, weapons and engine innovations, and the Arch Vile still strikes horror into my heart when I hear it's chuckling like no other monster has yet to achieve, but when playing Doom 2 I often long for the simpler levels with just the single shotgun.
ps: Doom 3 is the worst in the series, imo. Hopefully you find something good in it. Try to play the OG version if you can so that you're forced to use the flashlight OR a gun.
You could also look at Quake 1 for another perspective on Doom.

Hey thanks for all the neat info, alot of stuff I didn’t know there! I did do some research for the vid, however, obviously some of the more obscure stuff I didn't discover. I'll have to give those a read though. I like Doom 1 alot too, already nade a video on it as well. As for the Arch Vile, yeah, pretty spooky dude, can be tough to fight too. I liked all the new enemies with the exception of the Pain Elemental. As for Doom 3 and Quake, both are planned videos, Doom 3 is next in line now that this video is out :)

I have to agree that DOOM 2 felt at times as a fan made game. Levels with 10000 switches sucked , i wanna shoot stuff not trying to decypher the way towards Atlantis. They also did a lot of levels where they spammed demons to the point you had to plan the levels at higher difficulties. At least the super shotgun made game more enjoyable.

Oh sweet summer child, wait until you get into 'FINAL DOOM' with The Plutonia Experiment and TNT Evilution. You'll quickly realize that Sandy Peterson levels are absolute masterpieces compared to Casali levels...

Doom 2’s soundtrack wasn’t a borderline ripoff of popular metal songs, hence why it wasn’t as good
