    Jason, the difference in the cost to repair of different models plays very little into the cost to insure. Insurance companies base their rates on risk, which includes medical costs, the frequency of accidents, theft, weather damage, etc. So, a vehicle model that has a lower frequency of medical claims, storm damage claims, etc. can cost dramatically less than a model with a higher frequency of claims. I suspect that Tesla's driver assist features will lower the accident rate, combined with better maneuverability and lower frequency of rollovers, it's natural resistance to hail damage, and ability to shrug off the lightest impacts will actually make the Cybertruck cost less to insure than a traditional pickup with it's high center of gravity and damage prone body panels needing paint matching.

    • @m1kcan1
      @m1kcan1 Před 8 měsíci

      No EV is anywhere near comparable to insure nor will be compared to an ICE vehicle as there’s the risk of total loss in the event of even relatively minor accidents and/or fire. Minor dents or damage to the battery case underneath usually results in a write off by insurance companies as they don’t to be liable for faulty repaired EV’s

    • @ZipZoomZip
      @ZipZoomZip Před 8 měsíci

      @@m1kcan1 You keep ignoring the biggest cost of insurance price hikes these days, sky-high medical bills, loss of limbs, and negligent deaths. The cost to write off a brand-new Cybertruck is about $100,000 (with the replacement cost dropping over the the next 2 years) while a simple visit to the hospital for three days can easily exceed that. By making the vehicle less likely to be in an injury accident, using both active and passive systems, Tesla has reduced, not increased, the dollar cost to insurers.
      Also consider than a simple hail storm will no longer total the vehicle. And a tornado that might cause expensive damage to a Dodge Ram 1500 (for example) could leave the Cybertruck completely unscathed. Insurance companies take into account ALL risks, and repair costs are just a small portion of the cost to insure.

    First video with the Ford Raptor having to pull the Cybertruck from being high centered and stuck in snow covered trails. To get this truck compared to a Gladiator to be trail ready, will be at least $20,000 in modifications for the Cybertruck to be off road ready. The suspension needs the independant suspension modified for clearance for 37 inch tires, with suspension airbags, and spacers. The front bumper and wheel well needs to be modified for wheel clearance and articulation. A rear bumper has to be changed out to allow a tire carrier. A front winch capible bumper is needed. It needs a skid plate to protect the battery. A Gladiator to run 35 inch tires cost $7,000 minimum, in 35 inch wheels, 17 inch rims, and $5,000 to regear the differentials. To do 37 inch on a Gladiator costs an additional 2.5 to 4.5 inch lift at $3-5,000 of suspension lift and modification, on top of the $5,000 regearing. Gladiator basic front stubby bumper and winch additional $1200. Going offroad in any vehicle is not cheap. I have seen videos that the software on the Cybertruck needs to be modified because the electric motors cannot adjust to having one wheel off the ground and cannot adjust the power accordingly, as a Gladiator that has elockers does. I have seen the concept Gladiator fully EV with solid electric full axles and a battery pack under the truck, and it is as every bit capable as a Gladiator should be. The Cybertruck has a long way to go and will need costly upgrades if one will take it offroad, especially off road rock crawling. Most video examples show the Cybertruck on level roads, flat snowy fields and graded river crossings. When it gets high off centered it is already in full flex high mode, and requires another vehicle to un-center it, or pull it out of being stuck in snow. This vehicle like the when the Gladiator first came out, requires the aftermarket parts companies to catch up, and I feel Elon has dropped the ball and did not provide these shorcomings, just like Jeep did to the Gladiator.

    The Cybertruck steering takes a little getting used to.
    I do NOT consider that a negative in any way.
    Anything radically different will always feel wrong at first, even when it is superior.
    My clients face this when they first use a Surfpick, after years of adapting to a flimsy piece of plastic.

      Yoke is bad on the Model S because you still have to spin the wheel a full circle.
      On the Cybertruck at slow speeds the steering locks with less than half a turn, so you don't even have to reposition your hands from the sides of the yoke at any point.

    One question I have had with the new Cybertruck: if they're offering Autopilot/FSD on the Cybertruck and haven't included any driver monitoring software aside from the steering wheel torque sensor used in other Teslas, then how does the truck handle a driver hand-off event? This is especially relevant since the steering yoke and front wheels have zero physical connection.
    And unlike the fly-by-wire systems of aircraft, there's often much less time for a human intervention to occur (notably, it's much rarer to run into an object during a flight, and unlike Teslas, aircraft with fly-by-wire retain radars).
    And don't tell me fly-by-wire won't have its issues - heck, issues with computer control of the vehicle and human handoff is exactly what got the 737MAX grounded.

    • @rickdc3
      @rickdc3 Před 8 měsíci

      You should be concerned about how tough it is. A regular pickup is very easy to dent with even a shopping cart, the paint also chips, and rust can be a problem. If you want a work truck, there is nothing tougher/better than a CT. You can also protect all your stuff in the back with the cover. A regular pickup will also cost over $20,000 in fuel in just 4 years, then add oil changes, etc., and the cost of ownership of regular trucks goes up a lot.

    I had the same "not knowing where the front wheels" experience severeal times. When I first drove a Econoline van and a 15000# truck in the 1970's and in the 1980s when I first drove a full size American car after driving compact Toyotas and Peugeots for a decade. I had the exact opposite experience when I first started driving Honda Elements and have never needed to think about where the front end and wheels were. imo the Europeans and Japanese have a better feel for what makes a car easy to drive and put more effort into achieving it than the legacy US car companies do. Tesla seems to be more influenced by sports car design than muscle car design.

    The Cybertruck is ugly. The stainless steel panels make it look like something put together in a high school welding shop. However there is an element of brutality that I can't really quantify. A Ford Raptor isn't a pretty car either, but its striking in its sheer presence. I think that Cybertruck will find a niche once you wrap it in matte black or another color.

    Having low production cost is not everything. With the giga-castings on Teslas, a little nudge renders the whole car totalled. This is opposite of sustainable!

    • @mobiuscoreindustries
      @mobiuscoreindustries Před 8 měsíci +4

      Wow you really have no idea what a chassis does, do you? A casting is an amalgamation of the thousands of individual parts jointly bound to form the chassis. The chassis of a vehicle is essentially it's skeleton upon which most load resides and most components are mounted and aligned to it. Appart from component numbers and ease of manufacturing they are essentially identical.
      Any collision of low to medium intensity will attempt to deflect the energy upon the body of the vehicle first, through the various shock absorbers, crumple zones and the car's very own components in effort to absorb the energy of the crash. But ultimately the most important thing to protect is the driver so in a really high energy situation the frame too will take the hit before the driver does.
      Now on ANY vehicle, as soon as the chassis is hit your vehicle is toasted. A chassis is basically not replaceable. Once any of its parts are bent or broken it's a write-off material, because now everything is weekend and put of alignement.
      And for a traditional chassis there is really no backup to that. That frame is fucked regardless how you look at it and remaking a new frame with it's hundreds of parts is very much not worth it especially considering you basically need to deconstruct everything first.
      For casting however there IS a positivity of actually fixing such a vehicle if the damage is contained to a single of the gigacastings, since they are unitary peices they are a lot easier to separate, and you can then replace the casting with another one, remount everything and be good to go. An actually positive to repairability, not negative.
      But it's clear to me you have absolutely zero idea what you are talking about nor have any will to learn so idk why I spend time teaching you this

    • @JDCheng
      @JDCheng Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@mobiuscoreindustries Seems like there is a contradiction here. First, from press reports, "gigacasting" is what Tesla intends to eventually use for the chassis of their vehicles, not individual subframes. That's the point. As for the Cybertruck, I'm not sure what the space frame design will do in a crash. Especially if the panels in the Cybertruck are all as stiff as Tesla claims (namely, that the panels are NOT designed to deform significantly, enough so that the doors do not include structural beams for side-impact loads).
      So sure, the structure will protect the driver from an intrusion - but it won't reduce the energy transmitted to the cabin (nor to the structure it hits, for that matter).
      AS for repairability, there already have been documented Teslas in scrapyards that have minimal damage - like a rear quarter, for example - because the repair was deemed too expensive (even for a 6-figure Model X). Replacing a casting that involves half the vehicle likely won't improve this - especially since the casting will be by definition a proprietary part, without any third-party manufacturers.

No one buying a truck that needs it for real truck things will seriously consider a cybertruck because towing will be awful, hauling cargo with that bed design is awkward, and it has yet to be proven that it can actually handle a grassy hill.
