The blue shark (Prionace glauca) is a species of requiem shark that inhabits deep waters in temperate and tropical oceans. It has a slender body with a long conical snout that is longer than the width of its mouth. It has extremely long, pointed pectoral fins, which are typically as long as the distance from its snout to posterior gill slit. The blue shark has a distinct coloration, a deep indigo blue from above and a vibrant blue on its sides, changing to white underneath. The species is distributed circumglobally in tropical, subtropical, and warm-temperate waters, both on the high seas and within EEZs, from 60 N to 50 S latitudes. Juvenile, sub-adult, and adult Blue Sharks migrate, generally segregated by sex and age. The blue shark is the most frequently captured shark in pelagic oceanic fisheries, especially pelagic longlines targeting swordfish and/or tunas.
