    The reserve capacity (minutes) to amp hours conversion can be simplified to dividing by 2.4. 100 minutes / 2.4 reserve minutes per amp hour = 41.67 amp hours.

    You could have mentioned that battery calculator link in the beginning, not at 19 minutes in.
    But I knew from the start if I did a google search for one there would be a pretty good chance I'd find one. Good video though

    Well damn.. it's pronounced koolawmz. I was close lol! (Watch the video, it'll make sense) By the way, the purpose of the video is to teach you all the abbreviations and technical terms when dealing with batteries and the equations given are really a granular breakdown of energy measurements. As viewer @arnaldo35 mentioned in the comments below, you can simplify the Amp Hours calculation by using AH = (RC/60) x 25AMPS and it will give you the same output as more complicated equation discussed at the 10:09 mark. Thanks Arnaldo!

    Hi Dan am a chanuk like you with my Lund WC-16 DLX great boat. 55 lbs thrust Minn Kota bow mount. With ProNav GPS control I have a huge deep cycle Lead/ acid for powering it. It has 150 AH. I go out for 4 hrs at don to 8:00am and at again at 6:00 pm to dark. Bug out then. At the stern I need I need a battery to work my bilge and a Hummingbird 4’ fish finder . Have a marvellous Yamaha 25 Hp two stroke. Rope start

      Hi Joe, what's up my fellow Canuckian? :) Wow that battery is a BEAST! For your bilge and hummindbird, you could get yourself a small lithium battery for that and you would have more than enough power to run that bird all day plus have power for the bilge pump if needed and it would be small and lightweight. Something like a 50AH sized one. Stay safe out there and tight lines :)

    Great video. I'm having some trouble with your reserve capacity calculation. I'm looking at a battery from Canadian Tire and on the label it says 130 reserve minutes and it also says it has 65 amp hours. Doing your calculation on the reserve capacity calculation the amp hours comes out to 54.1666666667 amp hours. why the difference between that number and the 65 amp hour rating on the battery? I really need your help.

    Dan , I have a 19’ Phoenix with a 24 volt Ultrex and I’m only showing 12.4 volts immediately after charging so I’m looking at replacing both batteries . Found these at Advance and would like your input . By the way I currently have Deka 27 series that came with the boat .

    So is it fair to say if I want a decent battery for my camper, for the money, I should carefully study price vs RC. Looking at one national parts store I can buy 140RC for $109 or 210 RC for $129 or some hyped up version called Flooded with 200 RC for $179. Started looking closer at this and they are all over the map on price and throwing in CCA to add to the confusion.

    For a Motorguide Xi3 with Pinpoint GPS, 55lbs trust, 36" shaft, how much should the amperage be for a LiFePo4 battery.

      No problem, thank you for watching the video! Max amperage draw on that model of motor is 52 amps. If this is a battery to run this motor on your kayak for example, I would recommend getting the biggest one you can to be completely honest. I would not recommend less than 100AH. Hope that helps!

      Yes, this motor is already on my Ascend 128X kayak.
      Last season i used an 75 Ah AGM battery which was ok for maybe half a day. The reason would be probably that i am doing 90% of the time trolling.
      Thats why i am planning to buy a 12V, 410 Ah LiFePO4 battery. But i am a bit worried to not damage the motor with such a big power. What do you think? Thank you again for your tips.

      Well bear in mind batteries don't draw power, electrical devices do that when turned on. So with that in mind, if you have no electrical devices on and drawing power, then your battery should not be getting used. Hope that helps!!

    hi Dan I bought a marine starting battery due to the fact it's lighter and has a handle. it is 140 RC 25 amps 80 A.H but it doesn't show MCA or CCA how do I know how many mca's to test it at? using your formula for a 30 amp trolling motor I get 2.26 hours, sound correct?

    Hey Dan I got a nautilus deep cycle battery 12volt and a 40lb thrust min Kota endurance max motor how long will it last the battery 120 reserve capacity and 65 amp hours

      Hi Angelique, unfortunately you won't get very far on just a 65AH battery with a 12 volt trolling motor, they actually have a max draw of 42 Amps but average around 29, so you you'll only get about 1.5 - 2 hours of continuous power from the battery on that motor. Is there a reason why you have a smaller battery on your boat, like lack of space or weight capacity? You should go with a group 29 or 31 battery and you'll go to 4 - 5 hours of continuous run time. Hope that helps! :)

      AGM Deep Cycle batteries are totally OK for your trolling motor and are the best VRLA technology battery option out there. Just make sure they are deep cycle leisure batteries built for long and deep draws and not automotive starting batteries. They are built differently.

    I'm installing two Garmin Striker fish finders (striker 4 plus and hopefully a striker vivid 9sv but dont have that one yet) and while removing the very old (12 or so years) humming bird fish finder, I've discovered it was connected to the starter battery. Should I connect my new fish finders to the same connection, hence running off of the starting battery, or should I connect it to a different battery? Using the formula you shared, the starter battery should have about 75 amp hours (180 reserve minutes is on the battery) and the two fish finders combined run at just over 1 amp draw. So trying to figure out if I can get away with it or should hook the fish finders up to a different battery. The boat is a Legend 18 Extreme and I believe the humming bird was factory installed so they seemed to think it was fine to connect to the starter 12 years ago...

      Congrats on the upgrade to your sonar units, new graphs are always so much fun! You have absolutely no issue installing these to your starting battery that's what I recommend for anyone's installation. You'll be fine for the entire day no problem and don't forget every time you start your motor and you run that engine it will charge your battery back up throughout the day. I run two 12-in graphs, livescope, and my live well pretty much all day on and off and I'm powering my camera and recharging batteries and when I get home I'm still about 80% charged.       It seems REALLY odd that you wouldn't have AH or Watts on the battery. If you really only see CCA or CA on it, google the model for the specs.

    Good video. Good ‘layout.’ Good info.
    Also some totally, completely wrong information and conclusions.
    Capacity, CCA, MCA… they tell you information about how the battery is constructed and what it’s intended use is based on that construction.
    Yes- a deep cycle lead acid battery is 100% discharged at 50% of label capacity in Ah or calculated by label info to Ah. Somewhere around 12.06 volts or like below or 11.8 is shortening the life of the battery big time.
    And yes, people do run a trolling motor for 8 hours. I have many times: walleye trolling from a small boat. Because you missed the fact that a deep cycle will deliver many more amp hours over a long time and lower amps before going ‘dead’ than a high Amp power for a short time will. Or can.
    A 30A trolling motor draw for a half hour can run a lead battery into the 11.x volts range or below (dead), but you can get 8-10 hours+ out if you’re only doing 7amps-ish. “Pukert Effect.”

      Honestly I have no idea what you mean by completely wrong information and conclusions. Several of the points you're talking about I already mentioned such as the difference in construction between different battery types as well as shortening the life of a battery by over draining and it's actually more like 35 to 40%. I actually address this in detail in several of my other videos including about lithium batteries.
      Running a trolling motor for 8 hours straight is extremely uncommon, in Ontario and Quebec, which is the walleye fishing capital of the world, the vast majority of people will use a kicker for trolling or on a small boat a 9.9. but again I don't understand what this has to do with the video having completely wrong information, I'm teaching people how to calculate how long your battery will last for exactly this reason, for people that need eight hours of power on their trolling motor they can figure it out based on the average rating of their motor and other electronics. And obviously I explained that a deep cycle is what's needed for a trolling motor.
      The amp hour rating for marine batteries tends to be the same whether it's a starting marine battery or a deep cycle because marine batteries that are intended as starting are still dual purpose however the app our rating will be smaller because it's generally a group 24 or 27. The amp hour calculation remains absolutely the same.
      I appreciate the comments but I don't see any completely wrong information in this video at all. Watch my video on selecting the right battery for your boat, or the lithium battery video and they cover every point when it comes time to selecting the correct battery and what different battery technologies do. Btw it's the Peukert's Law you're referring to. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, you're not wrong but you're just repeating exactly what I've said in this and other videos :) Tight lines!

    Hello sir, purchased a cheap battery from a wierd brand, it does not include any Ah value, just CA, CCA and RC values, can I calculate the value witht these ones?

      OK so you have the Reserve Capacity number (RC), you can use that to calculate Amp Hours. I talk about it at 8:45 in the video with exactly how, hope that helps!

    Or you can take the amps your motor is putting out and divide it by the reserved cap. It's easier for me that way

      The problem with that is the reserve cap is calculated with an assumed draw of 25 amps. So that equation won't be accurate unless your motor happens to draw 25 amps when running.

      Out of all VRLA technology batteries, AGM are the toughest and can handle deep discharges very well, right down to 20% or even 10%. I wouldn't discharge it past 11.8v with zero load. I would NOT run it until the trolling motor is totally dead.

      Well without know how to read electrical diagrams wearer a ladder are step to step and voltage control in a diagram you can get confused sways ck read Oma Ck and voltage check you can easily mess up see I seen we’re people put 110 volts to a refrigerator and the refrigerator not work and not know that you got to have 12 votes to work the controls of the unit they buy a brand new refrigerator and find it don’t work and most the time a blowed fuse on 12 vote side of the control s blown

      No, you can't use CCA to calculate AH. I've had a couple of people say that you can and they sent me how but the number is inaccurate.

      Sure you can technically have 6 batteries running in parallel and yes you can use it while it's charging. So like if you have the system connected to a solar panel for example.

      You're absolutely right, that is the fastest way to calculate it and good job for pointing it out, no one else caught on to that ;) So I use the coulombs in order to explain in detail how the battery technology works and is calculated and I wanted to cover all the terms and abbreviations we usually hear or read when it comes to batteries. I've read a lot of literature where it mentions coulombs so I didn't want to leave it out, although in hindsight I should have mentioned the simple equation as a way to make it easier. I'll add it to the pinned comment, thank you!

      I'm afraid that's not accurate (I'm assuming you mean for AH), it will generally give a number way too high, especially on starting batteries. Deep cell construction doesn't drain the same as a starting battery. For example on a Group 31DP from Interstate (the AGM model), the CCA rating is 925. With your calculation, you get 127, which is way too high. The specs have it rated at 100 AH and the actual AH based on Reserve cap (200) is more like 84 AH.

      You can't use CCA for calculating AH, you have to use RC. Honestly though, your post had me hoping it was that simple, but I tried it on a few batteries and they all came out way too high as I figured it would, simply because CCA is so variable.

      @@DanRichardFishing This Durrecell i'm looking at is Group 31M What doe the letters mean after the group 31. Min Kota is recommending the best for my trolling motor is group 31. I've seen other batteries with a letter after the group. I don't want to make any mistakes when I finally order.

    Wrong! A 50 Amps draw DOESN'T mean 50 amps per hour, it means a certain number of Coulombs (charge) per SECOND! Amps by themselves are not measured over a time period, AT ALL, because Amps is already a RATE of current flow over time. Please make sure you actually understand the concept before teaching others about it.

      Sigh... You can use the same concept by converting my dude. Amp hours are based on ampere draw per hour, or 3600 coulombs. Hence why leisure batteries are sold in AH units. I understand the concept just fine.
