  • While the term "SUV" or "sport utility vehicle" has been used broadly to describe all types of utility vehicles, there really is a difference between them and crossover utility vehicles.

    Excellent presentation, Chris. There are a number of reasons that almost all body-on-frame SUV's have been replaced with unibody CUV's over the years. You've identified the most important, the fact that CUV's have more appealing driving dynamics for most consumers. I'd add a few others.
    () Lighter weight of unibody platforms results in better fuel economy and/or better performance than comparable body-on-frame vehicles.
    () Unibody designs (especially when combined with FWD and FWD-biased AWD) provide more flexibility in terms of internal space allocation and greater overall interior room.
    () The advantages of body-on-frame SUV's lie in (a) towing capacity and (b) capabilities in extreme off-road environments. Neither, however, is a high priority for most consumers.
    The bottom line is that CUV's play the same role as family station wagons played in the 1950's with an image of ruggedness and higher driver seating positions that wagons (and minivans) lack. The remaining body-on-frame SUV's are appropriate for more specialized use cases and for those who feel the need to reinforce their masculine gender identity with a vehicle.

      So basically what you're saying is that most people who drive an SUV really don't need one?! Well neither do they need a crossover. They would be better served with a minivan or stationwagon (as would the climate, by the way!! It's just that masculine gender identity, hey! Too bad bad for the generations to come...

    I like crossovers for fuel economy and travel comfort. Unless it is packed window to window a crossover is easily accessible getting in and out and will still give you the elevation on the road. I have an Escalade. The reason is because I wanted a four wheel drive capable vehicle that had a lot of towing capacity. An AWD crossover is not good on fuel and the differentials typically go out more because they are overworked when people challenge their capabilities. My two cents😬

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  Před 4 lety +2

      That makes a lot of sense, bbrownasu. That's why SUVs still exist. No one want poor fuel economy, but when you have truck-like needs, but don't necessarily need a truck, SUVs can do the trick. As always, thanks for watching!

    AWD crossovers are more appropriate for most people’s needs. Their capabilities are targeted towards handling bad weather, not off-roading. Most people’s SUVs were just overkill. Believe it or not, I used to drive down beat up dirt roads to get to a hunting spot in an old Cutlass Supreme that was rear wheel drive and no traction control. Somehow it always managed. My SUV used to do it without the drama but so would an AWD crossover.

      Michael Mikky It’s tricky nowadays because what used to be clear distinctions are now kind of blurred. To keep it real simple think of a crossover as sort of a station wagon that has been lifted and given AWD. A SUV would be a 4WD truck turned into a passenger vehicle. But in reality there’s a lot of gray area in between. A Toyota 4Runner is a pure SUV. A Toyota Rav4 is a crossover.

    This video helps proliferate the misconception that body-on-frame SUVs ride harsher and have worse ride quality than crossovers. That simply isn't true. Body-on-frame trucks ride harsh like trucks because they are freaking trucks. Not because they are body on frame. Fundamentally, body-on-frame provides better noise insulation, and less road harshness. Once you drive a good full-size body-on-frame SUV, you'll see cross-overs and cars don't have the same level of ride quality and comfort.

    Are SUVs safer in a crash since they are heavier? (Assuming an SUV and CUV have same safety features)

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  Před 3 lety +1

      There are a few factors that come in to play, Valerie O'Brien, and unfortunately weight can have both positive and negative effects. Assuming all safety tech is the same, if it's a vehicle-to-vehicle collision then the heavier vehicle should have a more positive outcome. However, weight can affect vehicles negatively, too, possibly exhibiting poor handling in certain situations that could contribute to a crash. For example, while a tractor trailer should protect it's driver better if it crashes in to a passenger car, we wouldn't want to drive one on icy roads, as it would be much more difficult to control. Hope this helps a little and thanks for watching!

      Wait, why? By 'car' I assume you meant sedan. If you want a wagon-type vehicle these days (which I do) you have to get a 'crossover'. Most crossovers are literally just lifted wagons, which are highly utilitarian, especially if you are driving mostly on paved roads or well maintained dirt roads, which is what about 98% of drivers are doing. Can't fit a massive running stroller and groceries in most sedans with two kids in the backseat, can fit it in a CUV. You need clearance driving around a lot of residential streets in Pacific NW, and I am glad my lifted wagon has 9 inches of that!
