It’s absolutely crazy that in California I can’t have an OTF knife longer than two inches but if I want to walk down the street with Excalibur hanging from my belt it’s totally fine.
Hello fellow knife nerds: OTFs do differ between switchblade and non-switchblade variants. It depends on whether there is potential energy stored in a bent piece of metal or a spring that is released when the knife is open.
Move to Oklahoma, a few years ago they pretty much put an end to knife restrictions.. including the switch blade, double edged dagger and the Bowie. No open carry of a machete though.. but those are legit in Texas
Funny storry with an otf here. I was around 8 years old when I found my dads stiletto in a random drawer. It was an otf automatic I stood there looking at it with my pointer finger halfway in front of where the blade was supposed to come out then started wondering what does this big silver button do. sad but "switch blades" used to be know as "safety blades" and were very common, even found in sewing kits. a lady could reach for a safety blade, tap a switch, cut the item, tap a button, and place the knife safely back in the "holding location" and never need to look at the knife. or worry about getting cut from the very sharp blade.

Just understand that some state laws do not differentiate between an assisted open knife and a knife that can easily be flown open with the flick of the wrist or your thumb. Any knife that can easily be swung out and some states is still classified as an assisted open knife. Especially here in California where they almost require for men 48 hours to open one blade.
Automatics are typically the slowest deployment option available. 95% of the knives I own and carry are a whole lot faster. Arc & button locks and gravity knives to name just a few.
Still nothing beats a 7+" fixed blade/boot knife like my Gerber Guardian Backup being carrying it 22 years on my belt, pocket, pouch bag, IWB appendix carry, IWB small of my back, neck carry and my tactical boots.
Doesnt matter how the blade is deployed, once it's out, it's no deadlier than a LEGAL kitchen knife.
