I love Billy Joel but I have to say John Denver did 11 concerts in the USSR in 1984. He opened up Russia to Western musicians after a long gap. Also recorded It's About Time, sorry song was What Are We Making Weapons For, with Russian, Alexsander Gradsky. Both John and Billy did a lot to mend Russian/USA relations.

One of my favorite songs of all time. This show was epic in 1987 (33 years ago). I had read Billy sunk 2.5 million dollars of his own money to do six free concerts in two cities back then. US and Russia relations were at a high after this event. Thanks Billy for being an ambassador for music and America !!

I watched this concert in USSR broadcasted on TV. 1987 and Perestroika was wonderful times. USSR opened doors for Western rock music artists. TV and radio programs became less censored. Billy Joel was one from first guests from the West. Then there was Pink Floyd and Scorpions in Moscow.
