- Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5, 1887 - November 17, 1959) was a Brazilian composer, described as "the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music". Villa-Lobos has become the best-known South American composer of all time. A prolific composer, he wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works, totaling over 2000 works by his death in 1959. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras (Brazilian Bachian-pieces). His Etudes for guitar (1929) were dedicated to Andrés Segovia, while his 5 Preludes (1940) were dedicated to Arminda Neves d’Almeida, a.k.a. "Mindinha." Both are important works in the guitar repertory.

Villa-Lobos composed his First Quartet in Nova Friburgo, Brazil in 1915, originally under the title Suíte de Quartetos de Corda: Suíte Graciosa and in just three movements: "Cantilena" (Andante), "Cançonetinha Grega" (Allegretto), and "Brinquedo". This version, the manuscript of which is dated 5 March 1915, was given its first performance privately at the home of the Brazilian composer, pianist, and teacher Homero de Sá Barreto (1884-1924), on 3 December 1915. The score of this version, which was never given a public performance, is dedicated to the Quarteto de Friburgo, for whom it was written. In 1946, believing the original manuscript to have been lost, Villa-Lobos rewrote the score, adding three movements and retitling the work String Quartet No. 1. This version was performed in Rio de Janeiro for the first time by the Iacovino Quartet on 7 August 1946 (Peppercorn 1991, 32-33). - Hudba

Os primeiros movimentos prefiguram as longas e lânguidas melodias que caracterizam os melhores momentos das Bachianas (note-se como a "Cantilena" aqui lembra o "Prelúdio" na Bachianas no. 4). Embora muitas vezes pouco escutada, a primeira fase de Villa Lobos merece ser escutada (e reavaliada) e apreciada pela beleza e acabamento de obras que, sim, têm um sabor francês (Debussy, Fauré, etc.) mas já trazem as melhores qualidades do Villa lírico e melódico. No século 21, aquelas discussões sobre imitação dos modelos europeus (pastiche, música derivativa, etc.) que tanto animaram os intelectuais se tornaram irrelevantes e merecem ser lugar no lixão do esquecimento. O que permanecem são a música e o deleite do ouvinte. E este quarteto é um tesouro!
Percebe-se claramente que o último movimento é posterior aos primeiros: tem todos os traços do folklore estilizado à maneira bachiana por Villa (esse som dele que se tornou uma de suas vozes mais reconhecíveis). Com poucas exceções, a fase da década de 40 em diante de Villa Lobos é bastante convervadora (há muito joio entre o trigo...obras grandes, difusas, mal acabadas e escritas por ecomenda) até comparado com um colega americano (suas harmonias são mais complexas e dissonantes e suas obras têm um acabamento perfeito e artesanal) da época - Samuel Barber - cuja obra foi desprezada pelas vanguardas nessa época justamente por serem consideradas retrógradas ou demodé. No Brasil, começa a despontar uma outra estética de compositores como Guerra-Peixe e Cláudio Santoro: importantes no Brasil, mas bem menores na tradição da música ocidental.

I think these String Quartets are so much fun. Any listeners out there who might compare these to the Shostakovich quartets?
I have played this and Shostakovichs first as a part of the Esterhazy String Quartet Seminar. They both start with a slow, pretty, first movement in a natural key and have viola solos that open a movement. There are other similarities that cannot be explained with logic, I think they feel a lot alike.

Há também muitos compositores vivos e atuantes no Brasil. Marlos Nobre, Edino Krieger, Ricardo Tacuchian, Ernani Aguiar, Liduíno Pitombeira, Alexandre Schubert, Marcos Lucas.
Antes de ontem faleceu um grande compositor que tem uma obra extensa que foi muito pouco gravada: Dawid Korenchendler, que formou gerações de compositores (de 1977 a 2020) que atuam no Brasil e em vários países do mundo.
Em breve seremos muitos a conhecer!

Rareties are the quartets by Dutch composers Johannes van Bree and Johannes Verhulst. Let me not forget the Milhaud series I started.

They sometimes play different notes from the ones printed. Different version/edition?
True. One example: ~8:10 Watch for the Viola triplet. I don't know why there are variations but I can say it's not too uncommon for a part to be printed differently than the score. Mismatches like that happen occasionally even though publishers and editors try to avoid making mistakes. Remember, these were printed before computers.
