- I got the rare opportunity to enter the Grindavik exclusion zone during an active volcanic eruption. Witnessing the destruction first-hand has left me humbled and deeply affected.

With all the news footage, aerial coverage, interviews and assortment of media I have come across, this is the best video BY FAR giving a sense for what it feels like to go through the devastated town of Grindavík right now. Well done Karl!
Takk Ívar, we need to colab soon.
@@TimeWarpIceland@ivargu Ég hlakka til þetta!
The authorities made the right choice giving you access. Well done and thanks.
Grindavik was one of my favorite day trips when I was serving at Naval Air Station Keflavik in 1979-80. Iceland never disappoints as a place to explore. Sad that the town is basically a wreck. Hope things stabilize enough for the fish processing to resume even if the towns folk can’t return.
PS - We use to get fresh fish at Grindavik for the Friday and Saturday night fish fry at the USO on base. Highlight of the week in Winter.
PS2 - Thanks for showing the town. Everyone focuses on the eruption and not enough on what the ground failure has done to a beautiful town. The lava berms are also interesting.
PS3 - Thanks for making / posting video.
Thank you for watching and thank you for sharing your experiences 😊
"I'll never email you again.. for awhile" =D Love your content, thanks for sharing this. Very sobering, but also fascinating.
I have commitment issues 😅
I really appreciate your content! My son and I visited Iceland in 2022 and were so inspired by the entire country. You are helping us stay connected to Iceland and your videos feel like you are welcoming us into your home. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Awesome, I'm happy to hear that. My pleasure 😊
You did great, I haven’t seen some of Grindevik that you showed. It is truly sad, and hopefully will stabilize. Thanks for doing this.
Superb, thanks for being persistent, getting access and sharing it!
Really love the honest, legal coverage as someone who is currently visiting and wishing we could see some of it (safely). Thanks for giving us that opportunity
I hope you have a great time either way. I haven't checked but the glow light still be vidible on a nice night like this. It's gorgeous.
@@TimeWarpIceland we'll be looking the next week or so! Thanks again!
Thank you for this video, and for the efforts you took to get it. My thoughts are with those who call Grindavik home, and with those who used to.
Mine too., ❤️
Great report! ❤ I’ve been in an Icelandic police car as well (in the back…) 🤔 I now know that the speed limit is 90 on main roads…😊
Lol, not a great way to find out 😅
Congrats for your work of arrive next the Volcano
Brilliant content dude. For all the time and effort, we are glad they had an Icelander telling a story about the volcanic activity.
Not some external media outlet trying to sensationalise the eruption.
If the Civil Protection Agency had any sense they would allow local Media outlets, i.e. local CZcamsrs and bloggers 'Just Icelandic, Hlidermenn etc access to tell a story on Icelandic life much better than a Newspaper editor with ulterior motives.
The tourist industry is very important to Iceland, let the story of volcanic activity be told by local media, they are a trusted source.
I find it difficult to get accurate information on the volcanic activity, and only trust local sources. The volcanism affects them, as it does every Icelander.
Every Icelander understands the danger visiting the active locations. If they misbehave, they never get back.
There definitely should be passes reserved for social if they are telling useful stories not just messing around. And have all the right equipment and guidance like I did to get arround safely.
Excellent, heart-felt reporting. I wasn't sure what to expect and found great integrity in what you reported and documented on video. Thank you for your persistence in gaining access to Grindavik and showing the world what is happening. Well done!
Thank you 🙏
Thankyou for a great but sad picture of what is happening to the area
Brilliant video , this should be posted on every Icelandic tourist page , it shows the REAL situation
Thanks for your effort!! For icelandic people maybe a volcano is a half normal thing, for the rest of the people is something incredibly!! You have a lovely county, thanks for sharing it with us
I had never been in a police car either, until I was coming back to the NATO base from Reyk on New Years Morning 1997. Drove the whole 50km, my buddy passed out in the passenger seat and Keflavik cops got me at .07 at the base gate. Better there than in the US. Aside from that...my two years in Iceland were the best years I spent in the Navy.
😬
Thank you, the footage you shot was very humbling.
For those of us who love Iceland and can't see this up close, this is very much appreciated. Maybe your next video can show some fun tourist activities to show how this isn't affecting the whole country. I always love fresh Iceland travel content.
Yes! Spring í where. I'm itching to do something fun 😊
Great work Karl, thank you very much!
This is very helpful! I'm going to Iceland in May, but have no intention of going where I shouldn't. I've been following the news, but this by far, offers the best insight into what's going on. I have a much better understanding of the situation. Thanks to you and to the people who had the wisdom to grant you permission!
Thank you and have a great trip 🙏😊
Thank you so very for sharing this wonderful video with us
Fascinating footage and information about this town. It's truly sad to see what's going on there. I feel really sorry for the people who were living there before. I've passed through Grindavik multiple times during the first eruptions in Fagradalsfjall in 2021, when I visited the volcano area 4 times. It looked like a very modern, well-organized, happy town. Back then, I was already scared something bad would happen to the town. The worst case scenario became reality. It's hard to imagine what's going on there.
this really touched me, Thanks for what you are doing
Thank you for telling me.
Very helpful, thank you for this.
We're booked to come to Iceland this summer, and want to be helpful and respectful visitors.
We stand behind you Iceland ❤️
Thanks!
Super thanks to you ❤️🙏
Great work Karl!!
Thank you so much Karl for sharing this incredible video!
Thank you for watching!
your video presents the unquestionable sadness the people of Grindavik must be feeling....it presents a view of the devastation in a truthful manner...thank you
This was a really great video, Karl! I'm so happy to watch and support your journey.
Thank you! And thank you again for the support 🥰
Thank you Karl for the considerable effort you went through to get this footage. Really interesting to hear about the hoops you had to jump through to get access. And if it's any consolation, it's not just you that has problems with interference while flying their drone - Iceland FPV (aka Isak) frequently does too, although I guess you already know that. Take care and stay safe!
Yes, this perhaps shows the difference between amateur and a professional. It's harder than it looks to fly close. My drone supposedly has a 5km range but I couldn't get anywhere near that. Also difficult because of a 60 Metre height restriction. I suspect Ísak gets permission to go higher on occasions to get there.
I live close to St Helen’s in Washington State, which last erupted before I was born. I would love to be able to hike near the eruption when I’m there, but I grew up with stories of people who died from not taking the St Helen’s eruption seriously. So if it’s still unsafe when I visit, I won’t get close, and will be happy to have visited nearby. Thank you for all your work in getting this update
Excellent work my friend!
Thank you my friend!
Great job Karl. It’s good they gave access because this is the authentic info we who love Iceland can connect with. I’ve been telling people to still visit with the help of your channel. Thank you for your persistence and for being you ❤️🙏🏾
Thank you for the kind words and support 🙏❤️
This was great! Thank you for all your efforts and description!!!
This is great, you are great, I was in Iceland this past March and I loved it, the people are a national treasure. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you 🙏 I'm glad you had a good time.
Great video! I appreciate all of the efforts that you went to in order to give an accurate description of the situation at Grindavik. My prayers are with everyone who is affected by these eruptions.
Well done!!
Wonderful footage, thank you for sharing!
Absolutely amazing.
Really nice to see this perspective. Thank you for the work you put in to get and share it.
It was lovely to see your shots of Grindavik. We were in iceland 11th - 19th December, and got as close as any member of the public could on the transfer bus back to the airport. It was spectacular to see. We will most definitely be back, we both fell in love with Iceland
Great Video, I love Iceland!
Great video, well done!
Great take on the situation from someone who clearly cares about the people and land affected by this volcano.
It's important to remember it's not just here to entertain those of us at the end of a broadband link on the other side of the world!
Couldn't have phrased it better my self.
Great content as usual! And it's great to see the channel growing up to almost 4K after 2 years. I think I joined the party after the video of how to move throgh Reykjavik.😂🚂
Saludos!🇵🇦
Oh wow. That's one of the first videos I actually tried making a good video. I spent hours and hours on that, especially the scene I got run over on that scooter. I could probably do that today in minutes. Thank you for following all this time. I appreciate it.
@@TimeWarpIceland 🤣💯👍
As always, you knocked it out of the park! Keep up the awesome content. 😊
Takk 🙏
Great job, thank you-MomMom Eva USA
Takk, Karl! Sjáumst í Júlí.
Sjáumt 🙏
Thank you for sharing your journey and footage with us! I'm just about to purchase a drone in preparation for my first trip to Iceland in June.
Impressive video.
It’s just that so many people live so close to this event, compared to the size of the island.
Very well Karl....let me know when you are going to fly again and maybe I'll come by and bring a gift! :)
Coming to San Francisco in a couple of weeks. What you bringing me?
Snillingur. Það er magnað að sjá bæinn svona og með þessarri nálgun
Ég er með myndagræjur, hefði alveg áhuga á að 360 allann bæinn.
Are we allowed to go close to the lava fields ?
Not yet. Best way to keep up to date on that is to see when the blue lagoon opens. When it opens you will inevitably be able to get close to the lava fields.
Porto União - South Brasil
I know they say magnetic properties can be wild at a volcanoe. Happen to have a compass?
Really? I can get one. How close do you have to to be?
@@TimeWarpIceland Oh not far. I know out in Hawaii when I had mine on me it went crazy. It has something to do with the lava. Its just something cool to see. The drone is what made me think of it. Magnetic interference can damper the controls. Now I know not all Volcanoes have crazy magnetics but it might I suspect there may be some there.
I shall have to experiment with that next time I get the opportunity.
hey, so i used to be a tourist in that area a lot, i would come like 2 times a year can you just tell me if maxs northern light inn is still there, same with the grocery store i think it was a bónus
Bónus is still here with its growing cult following. Northern Lights inn? Isn't that the blue lagoon hotel? That's temporarily closed due to... Well. I'll get back to my regular content but I might have a little bit more to say about the erupting volcano in my backyard 😅
@@TimeWarpIceland no, the northern lights in was a small hotel that was separate from the blue lagoon but yeah, not far i think when the weather was nice you could walk to the blue lagoon from northern lights inn
Thanks for being annoying enough to capture this footage. It's hard to watch the devastation to this small town.
why do you say "for a white man" - did not appreciate the remark and thus not going to support....don't swear!
How is that swearing? I am a middle aged white man. 🤔
And I said, "became a middle aged white man" not sure what you heard.
Very good video. Thanks
Iceland....naaaa lavaland😊
Sounds like an idea for the name of the hottest theme park in the world.
