    Honestly since 1.16 I remember hearing cave sounds all the time without being underground but I think it's a bug

    I think the old system checks if there is a cave or any dark opening near the player and if there is it plays a cave sound. I don't really know if this is the way it actually works, but I remember it being something like this, nice video btw.

      That sounds very likely. I remember often hearing cave sounds when near covered creeper holes back in the day.

    all i know is i'm pretty sure in minecraft beta 1.7.3 it will play a cave sound if you're under blocks and the lighting is a little darker, cause I have this forest that was made from me cutting down small oak trees and leaving behind the bigger harder to chop down oak trees, so now I have a forest entirely made of the big oak trees (it's kinda cool) but I get cave noises walking through it, even though it's day

    The cave noises used to be 100% random. Essentially they were background ambient noises. I am not sure the source of the idea they relate to caves but that may be lost to time, as in minecraft beta and alpha there was an abundance of lets plays and a lot of them learned information from commenters who learned from other lets plays. Essentially it was a recipe for misinformation and urban legends.
    Most likely the recent patch to make them play in darkness is to play the ambience in a place it makes sense. Cave noises really originally had nothing to do with caves

      Well on the new version it checks for a "mood" meter i think and at a certain value it plays one

    • @inutamer365

      @vladivascanu108 that's pretty much just a change to their ambience system. It used to be purely random. Not sure how it's changed over the years precisely but it was alpha and beta when people online were saying things like "it means you are above a cave". Hence they called them cave noises. I was pretty into modding in beta so knew it was another false game myth. Even into 2012 stuff some games had these little mysteries where not many people knew how they worked.

      @@inutamer365 Aren't they named cave1-19.ogg, its interesting they were only played randomly even with those names, i think that's why people thought that. i guess i wasn't really engaged with the minecraft community around that time so i didn't know any rumours. most of my cave sound memories are well, in caves, but interesting to know. Nowadays i think some specific conditions have to be met to increase the mood metric.

      I do recall in 1.2.5 that you can pretty consistently force the sound by being near a dark, vast area.

      dude I'd be so disappointed if they remove them
      those noises are my favourite thing in the game

      @@benjrobrt9029 It's still ambiance tho. The player remembers a odd sound or a music track shifting. It's game design. I mean the fact that we're talking about it means we successfully remembered it.

    I don't know if this counts as a lead, but I think I remember reading like a decade ago on the Minecraft Wiki that they just originate from dark places nearby (and aren't influenced by if you are in the dark place). I remember like being in the middle of building tall stuff (like towers with big, unlit empty spaces) would allow the noises to be played.

    oh this is interesting i have a creative world that i originaly started in 1.14 and i remember hearing cave noises for the first time, but i updated to 1.20 soon after and thinking about it now i hadnt heard a cave noise in a long time!

  • @calicust
    @calicust Před 27 dny +2

    theres not really a mystery, cave noises "play outside" because you are below a certain Y level. this can be easily observed in superflat worlds, where you spawn at Y level like 3 or 4, which causes the Mood to constantly go up and play cave noises a lot.
