In a sleepy corner of Costa Rica there is a very peculiar but extraordinary sanctuary. Run by Judy Avey-Arroyo for 20 years, this is the only sanctuary in the world devoted to saving orphaned and injured sloths, and is home to over 160 of them, some of whom have become an internet sensation.

I really hope that one day either Discovery Channel or National Geographic make an episode about animal abuse in Costa Rica. As a Costa Rican I feel very enraged by the fact that my country likes to sale an image of been super ecological and stuff while in the reality we don't have any laws to punish animal cruelty. Also, a group of ecologists got raped and another one brutality killed while defending sea turtles eggs from been sacked by traffickers. The court did nothing against the ones responsable for this and the traffickers were released. Our last president win the elections promising to enforce the laws but right now he has been named "enemy of sharks" as a political figure in central America that did nothing to stop shark murder! Please, expose this to the international media!

+Stephen Zogas I'm curious, what type of stereotypes? I can tell you if they are actually true, even if most of the people of my country won't accept them. The people from Sea Shepherd tried to expose this situation on the media but that was not enough and they didn't gave much details either (or at least what I checked on their website was not the whole description of what the ecologists suffered). The media here just ignored him and the news here don't talk much about what actually happened. But well, let me tell you another example, this past Saturday we have a traditional cowboy theme parade called "El Tope". Consists on people riding horses through one of our main streets in the capital city. Well, a lot of horses get abused on the streets because the owners don't take good care of them or the ones riding them are half drunk. The authorities forced some owners to take their horses back to medical care but they didn't punish the owners in any way (neither by paying a fee nor jail, because actually here no matter how much you butcher an animal there is no jail penalty). Some horses where bleeding from their feet because they didn't have horse shoes, one even had skin cancer and was forced to go to the parade. Even important political figures exhibit themselves in the parade riding horses but none of them actually care for what happens. And this is one of millions of examples. That's why the international media should expose this outrage, because when Costa Rica government wants to play cool they just talk about how Costa Rica is a natural wonder and that the international community look at us as an international example of nature conservation when actually that's not true...
My perception of these Nations is that of Culturally vibramt, beautiful places with more poverty, blatantly corrupt governments, less liability and responsible, ethical practices. This impression is totally based on media representations, vague understanding of the culture/ history, and absolutely no basis in personal experience or study.
Well actually that's not so far from the reality. The only thing missing is that some Latin American countries are doing better than others, but in general half of them have a lot of really fucked up issues and the other half is less fucked up but they try to portrait that everything is complete fine, when is not. That would be an interesting documentary.
Regardless, I would still like to travel around that region a bit at some point.
So after reading the comment section and upon further investigation, both of those baby sloths died shortly after. Apparently this sanctuary is hell on earth for these sloths. There is very little rehabilitation and more hoarding of cute sloths. This video really took a dark turn for me.

Both Sebastian and violet passed away not long after this video :( sloth sanctuary says microbes and allergens from volunteers handling baby sloths, but this handling during the shaving process looked very rough and I'd imagine stressed the baby sloths out devastatingly. Sloths aren't used to being shaken up like that.

Not trying to be a negative Nancy but I hope they keep those sloths cool after they basically wrap them in 4 layers of non-breathable mesh. Judging by how much the people were sweating I bet the temp there is up in the 90's-100's. That being said, these people are amazing for the dedication and love they have for these animals!
Sloths live in the sub-tropics, and their fur is usually very thick and completely MATTED in algae in the wild. These sulfur-butter treatments probably don't last more than a few hours at a time, maybe a day or two if the mange is really so bad.

Jack Potter It’s true. They have about 200 sloths hidden where the public can’t see. They are cramped up in small cages. They feed them veggies with no enrichment. The food is too big, and the sloths have choked. These two baby’s died not long after this video. They don’t clip their nails, and one sloth got stick, and resulted in him loosing a finger. They leave them with overgrown teeth as well. The sloths get in fights, and one of those fights resulted in a female sloth having her scalp ripped off. This is abuse.

nobody support or donate to this sanctuary!! these sloths are malnourished, with little to no help from actual veterinarians, kept in small cages with other sloths, and never even returned to the wild. the money doesn’t even go for the benefit of the animals. there’s an article published by the dodo in which two of its former veterinarians explained how it really was to work there - worth a read. please inform yourselves before supporting an organization.

It amazes me that they are so aware of substitute milks being deficient of proper species specific nutrients and microbes from their mother, yet we routinely feed baby humans with milk solely created to grow newborn cows from 60 to 600 lbs in six months, and nobody thinks twice! Commercial profits and brainwashing are abhorrent.
This doesn’t feel right to me. And I heard this baby sloth died shortly after they made this video. That is proof these people are not properly caring for their animals. Buzzing their fur off and smothering them in layers of cream and cloth is not right!! Those binds looked too damn tight and probably squeezed the baby sloths lungs to the point they collapsed.

The reports say what's at the front doesn't mirror the hundreds kept at the back, in overcrowded cages, with open sores due to lack of climbing space, fed the wrong diet resulting in dental and respiratory issues, and injuries resulting from overcrowding in cages? And since its money generating, the sloths likely won't be returning to the wild either?

I have not seen the place myself but much of what the Dodo report said about abuse was from second hand info. Almost nothing is known about how to care for orphan sloths and without government support and funding they do the best they can with volunteers and donations. The odds are that 9 out of 10 of these babies wont make it, that these few dedicated people have done such an amazing job to increase the chances that more can make it back into the trees. Instead of making it harder for them to do their work go down there and help out!
