  • "Bhakti in religion may be a road to salvation of the soul. But in politics, ‘Bhakti’ or hero-worship is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship.” -Dr B.R Ambedkar.
In this episode of Explain Like I'm 10, Meghnad is joined by youtuber and political satirist Akash Banerjee AKA the Deshbhakt and Snayhil Aneja who is a content creator at IVM Podcasts, as they try to find answers for the question - "What is Patriotism? " The conversation explores different definitions of what patriotism means and what the difference is between nationalism and patriotism. The trio gives their opinions about some burning questions like why Indians are migrating from the country, is it always necessary to showcase your respect for the country, even in seemingly unrelated situations, and why it's important to criticize your country when required.

It's a fruitful discussion and I agree. Except the part where Akash was repeatedly saying "It is an insult to our national anthem that we have to stand up even before Sunny Leone's films." By saying so, if Akash was referring to the explicit content in it, I'd like to add that we might come across more such contents in other Bollywood and Hollywood films than her. Films are certified before its release. You can simply look at its category and avoid it if it doesn't interest you. I think, like everyone else, she also deserves to be respected. It won't be good to listen to people saying your name as something shameful or derogatory. The time has changed. And I don't find it's a good thing any more to take our stigma related to films and its occasional explicit contents to the new age. It should be normalised as long as it's not offensive. Or else It'll be more like our uncles and aunties saying, "Stop wearing jeans or shorts, It's against our Indian culture and tradition". And I don't expect such things from you guys. Ever.
Just a humble and personal opinion. 🤗

Yeah, that comment was baffling. But rewatching 15:30 - 23:45 makes it clear that he's not against adult films, foreign films, or Sunny Leone, but he is against empty nationalism, bad policy, and brain drain. The insulting thing according to him is that andhbhakts force everyone to stand for the anthem, not realizing the irony of taking pride in the successes of Indians who couldn't thrive in the country.
Notice when Meghnad brings up the (former) Twitter CEO's Indian birth, Akash says again that it's an insult at 23:15, because the country's policies are driving away brilliant citizens. Then he ties the two "insult" comments together, lamenting that "after standing at cinema halls", the enforced nationalism isn't working, and in fact more people are leaving India. So actually he's saying Sunny Leone and Parag Agrawal are equally respectable! Both became superstars in America but couldn't have done it in India. I guess with Parag maybe Akash means, "why don't we have a CS grad program as well regarded as Stanford's?" But in Sunny's case, her famous adult films would be completely illegal to produce in India! (Which is more relevant than the fact that she was born and raised in North America.) I think Akash just got tongue-tied trying to explain the ironic situation with old Sunny Leone films, not her recent Bollywood roles, and that's why he said "adult" and then "foreign". Meaning, true deshbhakts would be angry that India has zero legal adult film industry. In order to see bodies like yours represented and celebrated in this way, you have to rely on the Indian diaspora working in more supportive countries... thus Indians may not feel so patriotic when they realize how unsupportive their country is being.

For Human Civilization to survive and have a future, Nations (and other things that divide us, like religion or race)will have to become a brief interlude in our history. For us to have a chance, Nationalism should be viewed as negatively as Racism is viewed currently.
As someone who grew up in Military areas in the 80s, the dose of Patriotism being fed to the large populace by folks who could probably be hanged for treason, is taking us down a blind alley that leads to doom.

This was soooooooooo good! I only wish I understood more of it, because I have to rely on the similarity to Bangla. (At least @TheDeshBhakt videos are ~50% English subtitled; I wish more channels did that. Anyway, I will continue to try to gently speak up that there needs to be much more diligent use of subtitles. Not just to avoid the political catastrophes of soft Hindi imposition that Akash mentioned, but for accessibility to disabled folks! Even Hindi subtitles would help.)
Anyway, the conversation gives a lot to think about. My parents left Kolkata during the Emergency. Having one foot each in the US and India, but being rejected as a foreigner in both, I was pressured to be patriotic and culturally assimilated in both places. Unclear if you can be loyal to two countries, but, Akash's definition really resonated.
Snayhil, it is sad to hear you say you're considering leaving. I have immense respect for my parents' courage as immigrants, but the older I get the more I wonder if it's still the right choice. In K-12 public schools, we pledge allegiance to the flag every morning, reciting "One nation, under God." The American Dream is an exploitative lie, rooted in yet another racialized caste system, which your talents and hard work can't save you from. No country's perfect, but it's better if we can recognize another instance of andhbhakti before we repeat our mistakes. Are you sure you want to move to a continent where the colonizers (same aristocracy your grandparents defeated) happen to call the survivors of their genocide against indigenous tribes, "Indians"? When discussing quality of life, in which country do you think you're more likely to be harassed or killed in hate crime attacks? Perhaps it's worth it, but good luck with your decisions either way.
Akash, amar baba Kolkata-e phire gachen, permanently. Jokhon bolchilen je, "keu phire ashte chai na", ami chinta korchilam je hoyto ami phire jabo ek din. Amar mone hoy je, onek "Desi"-der khetre, development ba system-er kono mane nei... na hole America-te jetam na.
[Tr: my father returned to Kolkata permanently. When you were saying, "nobody wants to come back", I was thinking that maybe I could go back some day. As for many Indian Americans, I believe development and system mean nothing to us... or else we wouldn't have gone to America.]

All of India should see this - an eye-opener for sure. Subscribed to the channel, Meghnad. Just wish people of our country could develop critical thinking, be socially conscious instead of just going by feelings and perceptions carefully injected through their propaganda machinery over the last 8 years.
